Is no one gonna say anything about the layout?
I think it looks quite nifty.

They changed the name yet again...
What's the difference between "Reply To This Thread" and "Quick Reply"?
Oh, I see... quick reply doesn't give you access to smilies and coding and such.
Looks nice... running a bit slow for me at the moment tho... It's gonna take a bit of getting used to.

I read in another thread that this has to do with the indexing of old threads that should be completed by tonight. Then it should be faster than the old version after that.

Uhh... wherever the server is, I guess.
The forum was defaulted to US Central time when I first logged in, if that helps.
My guess is that it maens that it will be roughly 12 to 24 hours from the time when the new forum went live.

I like it... all of it, it has all of the best parts of other internent forums I've been to (gotta love that quick reply) plus a lot more. I also love the new quoteing tags, much easier than putting things in italics and bold and stuff.
As for the layout, well it's different and different is fresh, ergo, good. I like this one, it's stretched out for people with higher resolutions. makes the most of the space.

Wow...kinda slow and everything is a bit big...and strange...but who cares? This is nice. It's kind of awkward, though, lol.
But I can get used to it

Just to reaffirm what edlib said, the huge speed issues at the moment are very temporary and will be a thing of the past soon enough. It was either leave you guys without any forums at all until it's done, or leave you with slow forums. Things will continue to be ironed out for a few days, yet.
Edit: Including these default smilies.

I assumed so. The smileys in the advanced reply box seem to be randomly generated though which is cool (as soon as you've put better smilies in obviously, but some of them are pretty good).
As for the speed issue, it was only to be expected, big upgrade like this, loads of features (I still don't know what the enhanced mode does), bound to be a tad slow. At least we've got the forums.

The green one tells you that people are online (red if they're offline). The yellow one you click on to report a bad post.
Just to note, I'm not sure if any difference has actually been made, but things are running slightly faster now (actually a lot faster)

Yeah, I think the 'indexing of posts' is finished. Before now every link i clicked gave me a 20-30 second delay before anything happened, but now the site responds practically instantly

You're welcome.
Server load averages just dropped from eight to under one.
Edit: and no, indexing is only half way done, but I've stopped it for now and will be resuming it overnight, although I don't anticipate it being anywhere as slow as it was.

I'll try to put up a slightly less assy forum header in the next week or so. That one is one Thrik whipped together just because I hadn't done it yet.

OK... back on subject (kinda...)
A little experimentation on my part has proven thet the new version of the forum runs far better and far faster in Firefox than IE. (Part of me wonders if this was by design... )
I never belived this was the case on the older version, and as a result this was always one of the few places on the web I almost always came to using IE.
From now on I'll only use Firefox to visit here. If anyone still complains about the speed of the forums, be sure to ask them which browser they are using.

Tee, it wasn't intentional. The slowdown in IE is caused by the javascript we have in place to fix the bugs with PNG images that Microsoft haven't bothered to do themselves yet. IE is the only browser which cannot support the smooth blending shadows and such that PNG images allow, hence it being the only that has to have the slow javascript.
The plan is to get a better optimized workaround for the PNG issue, since IE won't be supporting them properly until version 7.

Ahh... I see. Sorta. But knowing it's a fault in IE does make a whole lotta sense.
Still... it has taken me one more step towards closer to abandoning IE altogether (with the possible exception of viewing MS websites and Windows Updates.)
Which can't be a bad thing.

I disposed of IE ages ago (if it wasn't for that fact that i need Updates, Microsoft websites every now and then and the fact that it's completely integrates into XP, I'd uninstall it), it's firefox all the way for me. I didn't realise these forums were slightly slowing in Firefox (and faster now, seems about the same to me since the new forums have been faster). But hell, it's all good.

Yeah, it's all I use at work, since I'm forced into using Macs there, and I really don't like Safari, and IE for Mac hasn't been updated in decades it seems... and it was never all that good to begin with.
The old forum version seemed to draw a bit better for me in IE,.. or maybe it's just what I was accustomed to.
There's still a few places I go to often that I will be forced to use IE. (I belong to a couple of MSN groups where none of the formatting options for posting work with Firefox. Go figure. )

Pfft to those of you who have inflated your avatars to elephant-size. Think of those poor fops on modems, people. And those poor fops who don't enjoy being eye-raped by giant avatars.

I approve. Of this new site. Carry on now.
Listening to you, I get the music
Gazing at You, I get the heat
Following you, I climb the mountain
I get excitement at your feet
Right behind you, I see the millions
On you, I see the glory
From you, I get opinions
From you, I get the story

It's not the visual size that matters to modem people, it's the file size. And mine is under 5KB, so nya.
As for them being eyesores, well you'll have to deal with my Brenna.

Hey everybody. Look at my avatar! Are you watching? Are you watching yet? Look it's animated.
Now that the (file) size restriction has been upgraded I can finally use my Angel avatar (for some time).
