Unlockable Avatars?

I see people with lots of different avatars.Is it because they are site moderators or they unlocked them?

You can upload your own avatars.

Go to User Cp
Click on Options
Click on Change Avatar
Scroll down the list, until you get to Upload your own Avatar
Browse for your avatar or type in the email address and you will have your new avatar.

Aren't there "unlockable" site avatars that become available after so many posts though? A couple years ago I thought I saw a small group of Avs you could only get after 3,000 posts or so.

Not as far as I'm aware. That'd be a pretty good system if we didn't already have freely uploadable avatars as an established tradition.

When we first set up LucasForums we did have "unlockable" avatars. Although the levels were quite low. I think the most posts you needed for the higest avatar was something like 200 and then you needed 1000 posts to upload your own avatar. That was turned off a long time ago.

And what about ranks ? Did they exist in the first LucasForums' bulletin board ? And could they be changed after a certain number of posts ?

There was an old ranking system, but it's not implemented (yet) in VB3. I'm sure the Admins have more important fixes and tweaks before they devote time into the "toys"

Hope you're right... After all, vBulletin 3 has not been installed to purpose less options than its predecessor...

I think at the moment, you can still change your rank after 1000 posts (or if you're a mod or higher)

It's that ! 1000 posts or more allow you to choose a custom rank... But in the previous version of vBulletin, you could add a glow effect to your user-name if you had more than 1250 posts... Now, you can't...

That was a hack that we installed into vb2 rather than an actual vb2 feature, one which there's really not much desire to reimplement. Partially because only Internet Explorer supports the effect, but also because many users simply turned them off anyway.

Nevertheless, would it be possible to give our user-name bold characters once you've posted a certain amount of messages ? (As for administrators)

The bolding and italics are there to identify administrators and super moderators and that *is* built into vB3, but it's not something that a regular user can have. Sorry!

It's a nice idea to have rewards based upon post counts, but it's not something that I'm too willing to introduce since people can and will submit loads of pointless of posts simply to get said reward, which in turn becomes a nightmare for moderators.

User titles will return since they're not dramatic enough to encourage people to spam simply to get a different one, but stuff such as glowy names, bolded names to make you look like an admin etc, they're really things that would cause more trouble than they're worth.

Well, we need to do some database cleaning since our hacked-in title system on vb2 has left a lot of spare data in the way which will mess it up. They're on the agenda, though. ;
