hmm, nice catch, i didn't notice that

for all their promises about how it'll be far more story oriented than other MMOs, i still can't really see how they can deliver a definitive epic finale with something as broad and vague as an MMO...i mean if everyone does story quests to "finish the story", you don't have any concrete characters in that story...

years of waiting and KOTOR the MMO is confirmed first on E3 then again on an episode of X-Play I watched. I didn't think news was coming.

I also noticed that timing, the MMO started within months of the end of the internal project. But according to Obsidian, they were talking to LucasArts a YEAR after that about making Knights 3. So don't lose hope.

@ Darca Lar - I saw the X-Play episode, they were recapping the same story from E3, it wasn't a second confirmation. What we really need at this point is for LucasArts, the guys who have been talking the least about this project, to come out and make an announcement.

That gives me at least a little hope for a SPRPG by O.E..

^ Yeah, Obsidian has their hands full at the moment. They're only a fifth the size of Bioware, so I can't imagine that they could be working on it just yet. But we haven't heard anything since then, LA has shut up big time about shopping around K3. So either they agreed that Obsidian will make K3, or somebody else already is.

yeah, hopefully

what's obsidian up to anyway? i know they're doing the Storm of Zehir expansion pack for NWN2, Alpha Protocol, and that Alien RPG. I'm pretty sure Zehir is almost done, but AP and Aliens are still early in development, right?

Even if Obsidian does get the rights to dev K3, they won't have the available manpower to make it for a while.

So far as I Know that is all that they are doing right now. I do know that Josh Sawyer is working on a Black Hound (what would have been BG III) mod for NWN 2 on his own free time.

Keep in mind, Obsidian is only 135 employees strong... Three projects is about as much as a company that size can manage. It's why I've been saying stuff like 'they'll put K3 on their to do list'. Personally I'm a fan of that idea!

yeah, three sounds like a lot to me considering their size, even if one is just an expansion. I wonder though, if the team behind the NWN2 x-pack will join up with the other teams for their projects, or if they'll start the documenting for the next Obsidian project. If they do that, well who knows what they might work on...

strange it words for me but ill just copy/paste the important parts

“We’ve got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development,” said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. “And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about — in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it.”

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online? “Yes,” he said

^ Uh, yeah. We know.

Still waiting for word from LucasArts though, seeing as they're the publishers.

As for that Obsidian RTS thing up there, the link doesn't seem to be working.

Obsidian's "RTS" thing is a typo. So, Obsidian is working on an unannounced RPG title.

I confirmed with our HR Manager, Jim Rivers, that the 'RTS' is indeed a typo. It should have read 'RPG'.

Also, I never said KOTOR2 sold as much as Oblivion. I said that it has sold between 1.5 and 2 million copies.

I have no idea what Oblivion sold, but I bet it was a lot.

As far as an Aliens RPG is concerned, there are a lot more RPG elements in that movie than you would think.

There are really only 3 action scenes in the whole movie:

The First Encounter.
The Aliens invade Medical.
The Queen Fight.

Everything else was dialog, character interaction, character development, and environment interaction. Vasquez and Drake, Vasques VERSUS Gordon, Ripley and Hicks, Ripley and Newt, Apone and the Squad, Ripley and Bishop, and much more. Hell, you could even argue that there was BASE development when the marines took over Medical and fortified the area.

If you count the novels and the rest of the 'canon' source material, there is a gold mine of information to work with, and J.E. Sawyer has really done his homework.

I know people are skeptical of movie licensing in games, but this isn't the Aliens Movie Game. It is an RPG set in the Aliens Universe that happens to chronologically take place after Aliens and before Aliens 3.

KotOR I only beats KotOR II BECAUSE of the bugs and rushed development. K2 had the potential to slaughter the original (no small feat).

It's an MMO. You can kiss any hopes of a story goodbye. That ship sailed the day they confirmed it...

Yes... It's all just part of the plan. Remember what what I said now, guys. Obisidian getting ready for a new RPG... the same Obsidian that was talking to LA specifically about making K3 the other year... I'm interested.

Obsidian's a small company, so, they'll need to be hiring big time to get going on this new project.

Definately going to be keeping an eye on this...
Take this: http://www.gamebanshee.com/news/stat...uFqAIFcKnF.php
With this: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/31/ob...ts-on-kotor-3/
And pay close attention to the dates (second interview is after Alpha Protocol announcement and after KOTOR MMO work started), and you have some real possibilities.

You said it, small company. With so many other and even better options around, why bother with OE? And I really can't see a Kotor MMO and another SP being developed, much less released, at the same time.

Because they made the last one. Don't ask me though, it seems to be LA's idea.

Why not? Tell me more!

By the way - Anyone know the 411 with Obsidian Entertainment's Project New Jersey? It isn't anything to do with NWN, Aliens or Alpha. The Obsidian wiki said it was cancelled, but had no citation... and a lot of the folks on Obsidian forums have been saying the project is still healthy. Ign and Gamespot seem to associate it with Knights 3 because the project started a few months after the Obsidian/LA talks.

Doesn't sound like a good strategy to draw people to their MMO. If you feed the near-dead fans with another SP game, why would most even bother with the MMO?

^ Oh, I see what you're saying. The games would have to be distinct enough (and appealing in their own way) to attract players to play both. But don't you think that the MMO would be targeted towards MMO gamers as opposed to us RP knights fans? There doesn't seem to be overwhelming enthusiasm for a Knights MMO among the die-hard fanbase... so surely this game isn't really marketed towards us.
A k3 rpg would cater to the console gamers, mainstream star wars gamers, rpg/adventure gamers. There'd be a substantial market for both games.

Hmm, before I take my case any furher now, I'm gonna go do some more research.. make sure I have all my facts straight.

Errmm, not to sound cynical or anything, but there has been no marketing, how can the game not be marketed towards 'us', when no details of the game have been released, no marketing has commenced. Tell me how the game is being marketed towards MMO gamers when there hasn't even been one screenshot, or trailer, or even a press release?...

Ohhh and if you know where to look, yes, you can actually find overwhelming responses regarding the MMO.

Not really. Methinks LA expects even (and, why not, especially) the die-hard fans to join their MMO. I'll take myself as an example: if there isn't a SP KotOR game in sight, I'd probably risk my neck and wallet at the MMO. If, however, they announce another numbered SP game of the franchise, I wouldn't touch the MMO with a ten-feet pole.

Ah! Don't let them hear you say that!

Really though, no arguments there. I'll at least consider getting the MMO if the fees are reasonable enough (say, no more than $40 a year). But if K3 comes around, forgetaboutit.
