Some Suggestions

I really don't want to come across as telling everyone how to run things, I honestly just want to help this place be better. I'm looking for a new home on the internet and this has definite potential so I thought I'd throw a few suggestions your way.

Now first idea is something I'm not sure is possible (or might just be a pain in the ass to sort) but with all the General Topic forums on each individual board would it not be an idea to just umbrella them all under one? So no matter whether you enter The Cantina or Yoda's Swamp it's the same topics and thus pulling the whole community closer and negating the need to visit each forum individually where the same topics crop up all the time. It'd be nice because I assume some people just use one forum for their favourite game and ignore the rest and it'd be cool to get a chance to mix it up with fans of other games a lot more.

Second idea is a dedicated thread to non-Junk interesting subjects that aren't garnering much attention (see my sig), a "Recommended Thread" thread stickied in your General Topic forum to let users know they don't need to be stuck on a continues LOLNOOB!!11!, HOW DO U DO THES?, LUCAS IS POODOO/GOD loop.

The forum mods/admin/whatever to try to make an effort to reply to at least one thread from each forum each day. Boosts up the convo and makes the place much livelier.

The Classic Gaming Forum to be sorted out a bit better. Right now The Cantina could become a general discussion of all ancient SW games as I don't think they all warrant their very own forum any more. I don't know if linking to EMU's is allowed but it is a thought. Get someone in to review old games and spark some life into that forum!

I'm tiring of ideas right now but if these ones are welcome I'd be happy to suggest more. I really want LucasForums to become the best SW games/movie/Lucas website out there and I believe it can be!

I brought up the question of a single lounge a few months ago: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=148467 Though I still think it would be a good idea, as I have never seen some members before except in seperate forums.

Hah, great minds think alike!

Is there a reason why it hasn't been done yet or have any Admin PM'd you telling you why it can't be done? I'm linked to "LucasForums.com" rather than any one particular forum but it's starting to have no point. I use New Posts to find other subjects but it seems no-one else does, it's getting a bit tedious to be honest. There's no point in making threads outwith the populour forums.

Like it was explained in the other thread, before LFN came about, each of these forums you see were seperate entities. They had their own set of members with particular forum rules and customs. When the merger came about, everyone was thrust into one gigantic forum and everyone had access to several different places they'd never seen before. Over the years, people from before the merger have crossed over and experienced different places, but for the most part have stayed true to their particular forums. I, for example, still consider myself a native member of XWA and RSN, since they were my original boards. Some people still post exclusively in their native forums.

This is why I believe having a united "General Topic" board and getting rid of all the others is a bad idea. If you noticed, Thrik mentioned that we have one already, ClubLFN. That's well and good, but I don't think we'll ever get rid of all the other Off Topic forums. Sure, you may be discussing the same things, but for the most part, it's the members that go there who are different. I know that some long-time members would chafe at being forced to use the same lounge-type forum as some of our newer members, not because they don't like them, but because it's messing with tradition and forum freedom. And you also have to remember, LFN is for all things LucasArts. This does not just include Star Wars, weird as that may seem. There are plenty of other forums not SW-related, like Grim Fandango and EMI who are perfectly happy not to associate with the SW aspect of LFN. To force those people to have the same off-topic forum as the SW people would be unfair to them and to us.

It's a nice idea in concept, but it would never fly.

I don't think you can really call it without at least giving it a trial first (or at least asking everyone their thoughts with a sticky thread?). I think it would be a really great thing for the boards, it would certainly see it being more active and less boring. Maybe I expect too much? :S

I like the concept of Lucasarts. This board inspired me to go out and buy Grim Fandango, another reason why the "Star Wars and other forums can't mix" theory should be dismissed. I actually can see this becoming an amazing board but there's certain stuff holding it back, I'm visiting it to talk about Star Wars more than I visit TheForce.net, I'm using it to try and inspire new topics rather than sticking with my "Internet home" AlternativeNation.net and I find the userbase friendly and interesting. If I could click New Posts and be greeted with some other topics other than Mods, ideas for KotOR III and news particular to certain games. General Chat is for General Chat, not to converse intricatly about specific games/films so I don't see how it can harm the tradition of all these boards. It would simply tie it all up neatly together, bring people closer and open up new opinions and viewpoints.

I strongly plead for you and the other Admins to consider it! (As I said, at least ask the users what they feel about it).

Thanks,
Robb

I don't think "uniting" the general boards would be beneficial for those who like to stay within their own closed community, and a lot of older members of LucasForums like to stay within those communities. Like Niner has stated already, this forum has various different groups which have their own customs, to throw them all into the same pit would be disastrous to say the least. Giving each community their space and the freedom to evolve in their own manner is how we've been doing it for a long time now. You would think that it would be easy to combine these communities together, but looks can be deceiving.

Don't we mods/supermods/admins already do that? We can't be expected to be EVERYWHERE and post in EVERYTHING, but a lot of us are very much active around here and go to a number of forums around LucasForums.

I have seen you post in the classic gaming forums before, but the truth is that a lot of these forums are ancient and their communities long gone, or migrated to another forum within LF. Which means those older forums as archival rather than active.

We do have Club LFN, perhaps you can try to convince other members to spend more time in there.

We don't need to drop all the off topic boards, they can remain there aswell as have a large general chat area, so all members can socialize, plus, remain in their own "home forum."

Yeah that'll work. Just feels as if I'm wasting my time coming on here now because I've read the same topics again and again. If everyone has somewhere to come together and chat surely the chat will be good? It wouldn't hurt...

The reason people don't go to Club LF is because it's dead!

Well, it never really started. I mean, theres only about 28 threads, I think. :-\

The problem is its limited to only games, not general discussion.

It doesn't have to be about games.. here's the description:

"Discuss amongst your fellow forumees the hottest subjects of the moment. Talk in here is absolutely not restricted to Star Wars, or anything else in particular for that matter. Go crazy."

Not a problem

I too would like to see some "life signs" in Club LF. So maybe people can start some interesting topics to "revive" the club now that there's no limitations (well, keep it PG-13 ) hehehe..

Do what? If you mean eliminate all the other off-topic forums in the different sections of LF, then I'm just going to tell you right now that it will not happen. Ever.

If you really want to know why, then I suggest you go into each separate section and look in the off-topic forums. Not just the Swamp and the Cantina. We have lots of different types of people here. Some, like you, may want to mingle with everyone else. And you are certainly welcome to do that, as it is an open forum and you can post anywhere you like. However, others would prefer to stick to their one particular home forum and not have to deal with members from another.

People are happy with where they are now and how this community is set up. It's worked for about 4 years now. I see no reason to screw that up by getting rid of their separate little off-topic worlds and forcing them to co-exist in one communal forum. Some of these forums are quite old and established in their ways and to upset them by forcing them into your idea would be totally unfair to them.

Look, I know your intentions are good. It certainly would be nice if we could all come together and have a big group hug or whatever. But the fact of the matter is that what you are suggesting JUST WILL NOT WORK. ClubLFN is the best you've got.

There was a suggestion of just having communal chat linked to every forum as a General Chat and keeping The Cantina, etc in their places which is decent. If not wanting to merge all these forums is the sole reason getting that done or linking would be cool.

I don't want to drag this out though, I think everyone is getting a bit irritated at me and I'm getting irritated at them!

A long hard quest to make CD decent it is then.
