Mace Windu: Does Sam Jackson make him cool?

For those whose who think Mace Windu is teh uber, is he so because of Sam Jackson, or because of the character?

Discuss...

Both. I think his character wouldn't have been as great without Sam bringing in the cool, but the character is still someone lovable. Then again Sam pretty much created most of the character himself, as Lucas gave him quite a bit of freeweight. I think what really gives a huge sense of his character is the mannerism, which is definitely Sam Jackson.

Absolutely. Samuel was given the freedom by George to make the character as he saw fit. So I would say both as well. I love what Samuel did to develop him. Mace is BY FAR my favorite Jedi Master of the entire saga.

I honostly don't see what the hype is about. He was a Jedi Master sure, but if any of the other Jedi Council had been a big player like Mace was, they'd of probably been just as popular. Hell, Aayla Secura was barely a bit player and she has a huge following for some sick reason that I have yet to grasp.

Point. Also the fact she's a Twi-Lek. A species where most females end up slaves she has broken the mould and become a stunningly great Jedi. Unfortunatly she's not in any fight-scenes and dies rather craply in RotS but the potential was there beforehand, just Lucus not releasing it has scupperred what could have been one of the best Jedi's. Kit Fisto is pretty populour just for looking like a cool smiley mofo. Mace Windu is a great character. He has an attitude on par with Yoda but with an underlying edge and aggressiveness. Sam J is cool as f00k even when he plays golf, so that helps.

If Boba Fett can be so populour for looking cool/having a cool background then why can't these characters?

Yeah, if Mace was played by somebody else, he wouldn't be as cool, but I'm sure they would still try to portray him the same way Samuel did.

Isn't Kit Fisto famous for being born in on Earth in the movie Men in Black?

Well think of it this way, would Mace Windu be as cool if he was portrayed by a bald white guy?

How about Laurence Fishburne as Mace Windu?
He already had the Morpheus thing going for him from the Matrix movies...

Samuel Jackson did a pretty good job as Mace but I didn't care much for his insistence on getting a violet lightsaber. I guess I really don't know all the details behind it but from what I saw on The Tonight Show when Jackson made an appearance the week before RotS debuted, Jackson made it clear that it was he who pushed GL for the violet lightsaber. If it would have been GL's idea I would have felt OK with it (probably) but knowing that it was Jackson who put up the fuss just makes me think that the story got pushed in a direction that it didn't necessarily have to go. But what the hey, it's done now and a lot of people like the violet lightsaber look...

Like I said, I thought he did a pretty good job playing Mace Windu but I don't like it when an actor hijacks established story protocol (blue and green sabers for Jedi) because he wants to be able to see himself stand out from the rest of the crowd during the Battle of Geonosis. The whole thing smacks of weak-kneed deference to a popular actor IMHO. I guess it's just the Star Wars purist in me...

Not to say that an actor can't or shouldn't meanfully contribute to the storyline (think back to how Harrison Ford made the love scene between Han Solo and Leia work, just before Han Solo got frozen in carbonite) but I personally don't consider Jackson's whining to be a meaningful contribution. Those that like the whole violet lightsaber look would probably strongly disagree with me but that's my 2 cents on the matter.

I was serious about Laurence Fishburne as Mace Windu though. Not that I want to drop Samuel Jackson and put in Laurence Fishburne now because it's too late for that. But I think Laurence Fishburne would have done an excellent portrayal of Mace Windu. He looked pretty good as a bald guy in the Matrix movies. We also see him wield a katana as well so we know he could do the whole lightsaber combat thing. Plus he has the whole Zen master thing down pat and that ability translates quite well into playing a Jedi master. How would Laurence Fishburne's playing Mace Windu have changed the prequels? Sadly we'll never know. For all I know he may well have wanted to "stand out from the crowd" just like Jackson.

I think you have a few of your facts mixed up. He didnt' specifically ask for a purple saber, he asked Lucas if he could have something purple since that is his trademark color. Lucas ended up granting him a purple saber blade.

Plus, who gives a **** about some "established" color code junk.

No, Laurence Fishburne would be too much like morpheus.

and as Insanesith said, he wasn't standing out from the crowd, purple is his trademark colour.

Hmmm... yeah... Well Sithy, I guess if I didn't give a **** then I wouldn't have said anything but since I did state my opinion on the subject you can count me among those, albeit the few, who have a care, yet not that all that much, so whatever hombre.

And as for me not getting my story straight I'm just going by what I remember from Jackson's appearance on The Tonight Show. If I didn't remember right then OK but I don't feel it's important enough to look up so I guess I'll take you on your word. Samuel Jackson played the part of Mace Windu. Mace Windu wielded a violet lightsaber. That's the way the cookie crumbled. All in all I think Samuel Jackson did a pretty good job portraying Mace but I don't think the role was all that challenging to begin with.

Yeah. SLJ is a good actor, and seems like a nice enough guy in interviews. Lucas honestly didn't give him much to work with, with the character.

I think he tried, but of all the prequel characters, he wasn't that memorable. Important to the story? Eventually, yes. But memorable? Not really (unless you're already a Sam Jackson fan to begin with!).

I will always remember Sam L Jackson as the guy whose always the F word in every 5 of 10 words he say. Except Star Wars.
He's very unnatural when he don't cuss and swear.
Then again, I never seen Jedi Master cuss & swear.

Samuel L. Jackson made the character good. Although he did make an idiot of himself by his acting in AOTC.
