Well theoretically he was either killed by Dooku or Dooku just assumed his identity to purchase the clone army. I prefer the latter, but apparently the former is "official" via the EU.

He really was a Jedi Master, and he really was killed 10 years prior to AOTC...

I thought he died, but felt that the Republic would need the army. Dooku wanted to fulfill this, but went to the darkside doing it.

im pretty sure dooku told him to order the clone army. And Siyfo Dyas and dooku belived the jedi were corrupt.
