Choppy frame rates

Whenever I fly by or pass my view over a large ship or station, my frame rate in XWA becomes very choppy. The game doesn't slow down or anything because all the sounds and music still play properly, but it's almost as if the game is skipping frames in order to keep up. This also seems to happen when I'm firing on a ship I'm in close pursuit of.

The reason that I'm confused as to why this is happening is because I have a pretty darn good PC

Q6600@3.2ghz
nVidia 9800GTX Black edition from XFX
4 gigs 1066MHZ RAM
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme music edition
Vista Ultimate x64
Installed all models from the XWA upgrade site.

All settings in game are maxed, and my video card is set to 8x AA/Supersampling through the nVidia control panel. No other options are forced on my graphics card.

It doesn't do this when all my settings are lowered, but I also can't seem to isolate which setting is causing the issue, and it doesn't seem to happen consistently.
