I think it could have been turned into a serious theological debate if you had phrased it right.

For example; if thread had been titled: "Why does God allow and/or create human suffering?" I think people could have discussed that seriously. That's a legitimate theological argument, one that has been going on as long as there has been such things.

Phrasing it the way you did, though, encouraged it to degenerate into confrontational ugliness rather quickly.
