She's a fine candidate for that new anti-psychotic drug study they're running over at the nearby medical school.

Either that or the villagers are trying to get rid of her--"Oh, please, yes, kiss the cobra. Do we get your hut if you die?"

From MST3K's spoof of "Hercules Unchained"--heard as Roman medic soldiers carry off an unconscious Greek Hercules on a 1950's Army green canvas stretcher: "Hi, we're IX-I-I. Did somebody dial IX-I-I?"

Maybe it's a comment on the Indian men in the local area...

I just don't get the "married" part. Can't she and the snake just stay good friends?

It's a cobra? I'm betting she doesn't survive the honeymoon.

The marriage is already in trouble the groom didn't even attend the wedding.

Meh. It's just symbolical. She's not actually going to sleep with the snake, sillies. There are tons of such "marriages" which happen here...

Ages. It's old, like tradition. Like, marrying this will give plenty of good luck, or doing this will give bad luck etc. Most of these customs got wiped out around the time the British took over, but they haven't stopped. And honestly, with the crappy sort of government India has, I don't think they ever will.

actually, Sabre is right, both of us being Indians, we know how much it sucks, well the nonsense traditions that is, like Sati. that is when the widow burns herself either willlingly or unwilliingly alive on he dead husband's funeral pyre.
so yeah, apart from the pissed-up attitude of the british toward the indian ppl, the rule was quite beneficial in removing some of these beliefs and restoring sanity in some parts of india.

Umm...So?

This woman can marry a tin of baked beans, IMO. She may be a little...eccentric by Western standards, but some people might think the same about not eating meat from strangled animals, say, or eating fish on fridays...

Under the Nazis in Germany, those betrothed to men on the front line who were killed could marry their helmets instead...

That would be a very good way of making yourself the most entertaining highlight of the ER staff's night and the talk of the entire department for months to come. You might also have the honor of showing up in an article in a medical journal. Just Don't Do It.

I read in a medical journal that people are injured all the time when doing quite kinky things with their vaccuums

This reminds me of something from Family Guy:

Insurance Agent: "And in the event of your death, you want all your money to go to your wife?"
Peter: "That's right." Wife's a slice of blueberry pie.
IA: "Okay...just sign here."
Peter: Got a bunch of blue stuff all around his mouth. "Yeah, you should probably just cancel that."
