Morrowind. (Warning: May Contain Spoilers)

Anybody else played Morrowind? I heard Achillies and Redhawke Going on about it, so I thought I'd try it out.

Holy Crap, How long has this been out?!?

Its now probabbly one of the best RPG's I've ever played. I love it because its so open ended, even more than kotor. And the level sizes are enoumous. For example, I decided start swimming around Vivec and bit, and after fighting of the constent attacks from the waves of Slaughterfish, I found myself on a Shipwreak. unfortunatly My natural curiosity kicks in, and I enter the boat to find A walking skeleton with a Warhammer, I never made it out alive...

Anybofy else have any stories about any of the Elder Scrolls games?

I've played Morrowind for more hours than I'd care to admit. Strangely addicting, though not without its share of flaws. The exploration is the funniest part of that game IMHO, exploring the vast lands and finding all the hidden places and artifacts.

If you haven't already, download the Better Bodies and Better Heads mods. They replace the horrible character models in the original with models that look a lot better. Couldn't play Morrowind without those.

Keep exploring the waters around the island and you'll find some good stuff. There are plenty of underwater caves, an underwater Dwemer ruin (containing one of the better armors in the game) and an underwater Daedric ruin (where a quest can be found).

Yes.. the one thing I sorely miss in Oblivion is the lack of anything interesting underwater...

with Morrowind, you had abot's Water Life mod (adds hundreds of aquatic species, fishing, treasure chests & 'palaces').. ruins.. and real landscape.. hehehe...

Better Heads & Better Bodies are essential.. plus I like using AlienSlof's Better Beasts as well... of course, anything Slof textures is beautiful.. just be aware that her (Goth Shop) work is 'adult' oriented depending on the version of Better Bodies you install

I could go on & on with lists of mods I use.. but this link should list most of them...

As for the game itself.. I like it much better than Oblivion to be honest.. I guess Morrowind spoiled me with Levitation & purposeful Swimming

If you like Morrowind, I'd highly suggest getting the 2 expansions.. Tribunal & Bloodmoon.. or hopefully, you bought the GotY edition (which includes them)...

It seems that there are quite a few Morrowind fans on these boards

You'll also find more mods suggestions in these posts:

While overall I tend to agree, there is at least one interesting thing underwater in Oblivion. In the middle of the lake east of Bravil I stumbled upon a trapdoor on the seafloor (don't ask what I was doing out there). Inside there was a pit with a huge slaughterfish in, with... interesting... content in its belly after being defeated. Above was some cave full of Conjurers and Daedra. One door lead out to the outside within the ruined tower south of Bravil which you can't reach normally. It's possible this is part of some quest I haven't done though.

But as for Morrowind, the sea life mod (along with the one adding birds) adds a lot of life and ambience to the world. It's just a shame they show up as red blips on the local map, fouling up my enemy detection (Detect spells with permanent duration on items are normally very useful). First time I saw it after installing the mod I nearly jumped out of my seat, believing there were siddenly dozens of hostiles nearby.

ahh, yeah.. well there is that one thing.. hehehe.. about jumped out of my shorts when I saw how huge it was... kinda like the one HUGE crab in the cave. I stumbled upon that one before I had any decent light spells or night-eye... (I also play with no music, so I didn't have the music cue)...

When I heard something move and equipped a torch.. it was ALL there up in my face hehehe.. I love stuff like that..

Morrowind was so much fun too just because of all the little "Doh" moments.. I remember exploring one tomb (one of the larger ones) and coming across a chest that needed a key, because I sucked at that point in time ran out of lockpicks and had no appropriate scroll/spells

Searched forever to try and find it, finally gave up.. on my way out to go buy more picks I just happened to look at the ledge next to the door.. guess what? There was the key resting ever so "camoflauged" right at the entrance...

Lesson: explore and look everywhere in Morrowind. They make those seemingly useless spells ( *cough* detect key *cough* ) for a reason .. hehehe

I guess it's time to play an evil char

I miss the underwater exploration part too in Oblivion. There are a few chests here and there underwater but that's about all.

That's one thing I didn't like in Morrowind, that keys could be so incredibly hard to find. Even with a detect key enchantment marking on your minimap where it's supposed to be it sometimes took as much as 10 minutes going through that immediate area with a fine comb to find the blasted key. Rather annoying when you'll have to find hundreds of keys this way. I can't count the number of times I wished for a spell like the feat in VtM:Bloodlines that makes little sparks fly out of objects of interest to make them easier to spot.

Unfortunately the wilderness chests rarely if ever contain something worthwhile. I've only found a handful of gold pieces and some silverware weighing more than they were worth. Kind of lessens the joy of "off track" exploration.

I guess the cave with the slaughterfish under the lake is part of the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood quests then? Too bad those give infamy points, wouldn't want to tarnish my halo-wearing character's reputation with those. I know it's just a game, but I still feel guilty when I make my characters commit evil acts.

As far as expansions go, they were well done. My only beef with them is that once you come back to the mainland, it's hard to pick up where you left off. At this point, I play with both expansion installed, but only for the updates/patches. I don't leave Vvardenfell anymore.

As for a list of "essential", 1st-time-out mods, I'd recommend:

Better Bodies
Better Heads (or Headpack by Gary Noonan)
Avenger's postponed Dark Brotherhood attack
Sandman's Dwemer Headache Fix v1.0
Fashionable Merchants
Improved No Glow v1
Unofficial Morrowind Patch (doesn't fix as much as it says that it does, but better than no patch at all).

If you have a high end machine and you want to get the absolute best game possible (visually), you might want to consider one of the various texture packs. So far, I've found Visual Packs 2.11 + 2.2 + XT to be the best (don't forget Slartibartfast's Texture Fix).

Yeah I seem to have the Essential Better Bodies and Better Heads mod, but the system I'm running it on Has 64 megs of ram. (I'm running it on xbox) Its next to impossible to get any really good mods on it. I wanted the weapon sheaths mod, but unfortunately the xbox can't handle it.

I noticed there's a severe lack of armor sets in this game though, there's the Chitin,Notch, and Imperial, but that's about it (at that point in my game though) And last but not least, Wheres the Chitin Longsword! its Driving me crazy in my search for it!

A good mod for morrowind would be one the changes that HORRIBLE running animation for just about every character in the game, it looks like they're being picked up by they're armpits by an invisible force.

Giant Crabs....oh joy...

One mod I like is the xbox visuals pack, its like the the Vibrant Morrowind mod, but for us with effin' 64 megs of ram. The only problem is that textures tend to look fuzzy at a distance, you get over it though.

And if the xbox could support it, the "Morrowind" Comes Alive mod would be a permanent addition to my game.

I think I'll get the game for PC though, I want to be able to get some of the really cool mods going.

There are quite a few types of armor that are available in complete sets. The standard ones I can remember are Iron, Steel, Orcish, Netch, Glass, Ice, Chitin, Bonemold, Fur, Wolf, Bear, Dwemer, Ebony, Adamantium and Daedric.

Aside from those there are "special" types like Legion armor, Templar Armor, Indoril Armor (worn by the Temple Ordinators), Dark Brotherhood (worn by the Assassins stalking you) and Royal Guard Armor (worn by the King's guards in Mournhold if you have the Tribunal expansion).

Much of the generic loot in dungeons is automatically generated as far as I can tell, so it's probably a matter of luck where you can find one of those swords (unless you find some NPC who has it and liberate them of theirs).

I believe the Better Bodies mod fixes much of the animations for the better, though characters still have a bit of a tendency to walk like they have something stuck up their posterior. Better than the standard models at least (those are so horrible I stopped playing the game when I first got it).

I'd get the PC version rather than a console version. That moddable and modded games are a waste to play on a console.

iNutter, I would recommend downloading any mod that stops those blasted cliff racers from attacking you. Oh, it may seem interesting at first to fight an enemy that attacks from the air, but after you've killed dozens of those ******* creatures and they keep swooping down on you when you go on a little hike in the wilderness, they will be annoying beyond description.

The expansion packs are a must-have. Tribunal and Bloodmoon are much better than Morrowind, in my opinion. Not only is the gameplay better, but here are lots of great new items. One of the best is Hircine's ring. An essential item for any evil character. I remeber using the ring to become a werewolf, running into an ebony mine, killing all the guards and workers, and then grabbing as much raw ebony as my character could carry. You can make a lot of money using that ring...

In addition to the armors listed by stoffe, there's quite a few unique items such as the Lord's mail which is the best cuirass in the game.

I've played it for a long long time...
It can be quite addicting, but eventually you will get bored. The lack of a decent story is annoying, but Morrowind stands for total freedome anyway...

Oblivion is better though, if you have never played Morrowind. For me, Oblivion became boring even faster, because it is almost the same.

Btw: When I played Morrowind, one thing that kept me going is that LOTR mod... but I stopped playing before it was finished. Does anybody know if that mod is already released?

I noticed those, the first time I fought one I got scared **** less, I only find them when I start hiking into the mountains, I rarely get attacked when I walking away from them.

Very useful, told me where the Chitin Longsword is, it doesnt exist, much to my dismay.

I'm used to ugly graphics and horrible animations, before I got my xbox, I had nothing but an N64, and 32meg graphics card in a Pentium 2 processor. As long as the game play doesnt bother me I'm good.

I'm getting it for PC soon, The only thing I don't meet in the system requirements is ram (I only have 128) But I can play F.E.A.R on this computer, Really Slowly that is. (as in I have to wait 10 minutes after loading a savegame) Though the ridiculous slowness still makes the game Freaking scary....

My step brother has oblivion now so whenever I go to his house I just play it (well, oblivion and Garry's Mod). I just wish it was an MMORPG, or at least had some sort of online mode.

Have you ever Played Runescape? They attempt to do what TES does, only online. Unfortunatly, its horrible. To many players, to many problems, essentially, it gets boring quitckly.

And by Garry's mod, do you mean the glorious mod that belongs to Half-Life 2? Thats an amusing mod...

I disagree here but that's a matter of personal taste. I rather liked the MW main storyline and the fact that you were not spoonfed.

It was never finished due to some legal issues as you can see on their website: http://www.memod.co.uk/

I think we need more good single player rpgs and god thanks it's not an MMORPG. As for multiplayer, this is what the devs said: "Rather than split our focus between two different types of gameplay, we'd rather focus on one and make it the best single-player experience possible" and I agree with them 100%.

However, if you're interested, there is an Oblivion MP mod (PC only) but I've never tried it: http://csusap.csu.edu.au/~mloxto01/
