Yo, artsk!llz people!

Now I admit that when it comes to making halfway decent graphics with gimp or PS or whatever that I'm not exactly the cream of the crop, but I'm hoping some of you can at least help me figure this out...

I was watching the latest (?, unless a new one came out this weekend) Halo3 video "Et tu brute?" which discussed the creation of the brutes in the upcoming game. Some footage was included of concept art design, and I don't know what program they were using but they were making stuff out of scratch that resembled real pen and ink drawings pretty dang well. Granted, they're paid to be perfect at doing that, and they probably drop a boatload of coin on their software. Is this simply a technique, a different program, or are there downloadable tools for editors like gimp or PS that make it easy?

I'll see if I can find some screens or the video...

If you are interested in what can be accomplished with Photoshop, go there.
http://www.cgtalk.com
Go to the 2D section.

As far as I know, when you're professional at Photshop (or compareable software) you don't draw with the mouse, but with special pencils on special surfaces (don't know the english names :S).

I didn't watch the video, but since it's about game characters, my guess is, that those are 3D models, created with either 3d studio max or Maya. For the textures, well those are still drawn in photoshop and the like.

I was refering to the techniques used in the concept art, not the animated models.

They're using graphics tablets. With a good tablet and decent software you can essentially create images on a computer just as well and just as quickly as your "pen and paper" artistic skills allow.

That is, if you can draw well, you can do this well. If you draw poorly, this will be just as challenging for you.

Here's a wiki article if you want a bit more detail: Wiki - Graphics Tablet

I've seen cheap ones starting around $50 US and the expensive ones can be as much as several thousand dollars -all depending on the quality, capabilities, size and so forth.

I saw them using tablets, I just wasn't sure what kind of software and editing techniques were used.
