I have 2 work-related holiday parties next week that I am now obligated to attend... going muchly against the grain of my nature. I'm forcing myself to go as part of my "be a tiny bit more social" initiative of 2007.

One is the college-wide staff/ faculty party. The other is for our immediate department only.

I don't truly expect good things to come of either one, really... except for a couple of free meals, and perhaps a brief opportunity to show my co-workers that I'm not completely the continually grouchy, totally introverted, rabidly anti-social ******* loser I'm sure they all pegged me out to be years ago.

Absolutely zero expectations for any kind of wild office romance to bloom this time around anyway. (Though I guess I certainly wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised on that front... realistically I know it just ain't going to happen, and refuse to get any kinds of hopes up.)

EDIT:

2600 posts. Wicked.

I don't get it. You're some music guy. You should be getting tons of chicks, right?

Except the only chicks I meet are also music chicks... and aren't at all impressed with what I do. (Most of them are probably better players than me.)

Besides... how many groupies go to a concert wanting to get backstage to meet the soundguy?

The only time I get noticed by anyone in the audience is if I'm doing my job badly. If I'm doing things right, then the band gets all the credit for sounding amazing.
(On the other hand: if I'm doing a good job on the sound, but the band is sucking that night, I will still get all the blame. Nobody ever wants to think thier favorite band could be at fault. It's always the idiot sound person ruining the concert...)

Perhaps if I had time to join a band and play out it might be somewhat different. However it never really was for me, even when I did do that, anyways.

But then I was always more 'nerdy musician' than 'cool musician.'

I always saw more benefit to myself in spending time alone and isolated in a tiny room running scales than learning a couple of easy, dumb songs and then playing wild, drunken parties.
(And after all: The only party I ever played, my white Les Paul got vomited upon... so it was not a performance I was ever all that inclined to repeat anyhow...)

But I'm really trying very hard not to beat myself up about it anymore. I figure walking around carrying all that negative energy simply can't be helping at all with my chances of finding ways of building a mutual attraction with a member of the opposing gender.

That's a crime against humanity. Vomiting on a guitar.

Despite the fact retail isn't the best job, I did perchance today meet the dude who helps the Blue Man Group with thier sound and setup for tours.

Who knows, I may get tickets one day. HAWT.

Trying to get people at my work do get together for a party is nigh impossible, and when we did it is akward

Regardless, i think I have some sort of relationship curse on me. Several times I have asked girls out, or to spend time with and find out they have BFs. I even asked a co-worker if she wanted to spend some time talking outside of work because we have some great conversations, I think she took it wrong because she mentioned to me that her and another co-worker were going to get a hotel room that weekend.

I even asked 4 girls to be on my curling team, 3 of them said no, and one will find out later (which in girl language is "no, but I want to break it to you gently and get your hopes up while i later stab you in the back")

I swear my Y chromosome is cursed to never be able to go on a double date with a Pair of X chromosomes

Sure... 15 years later I can actually laugh at it too.

At the time I was not at all amused, let me tell you.

(And it gets better: It was the bassist who puked on it too... while I was playing it.)

Party's over. Had one glass of bad wine and talked to one girl who got out of the conversation as soon as possible. Thus my aspirations for drunkeness and chicks were dashed. Le sigh...

Food was really great, though

Well... that's something. Good food can be it's own reward.

Yeah: I'll just be happy if I can say that after my parties too. That's all I'm counting on at this point. Anything else that happens will just be gravy.

I don't talk to people because they invariably are wrong about whatever they're talking about and I'm not going to be a dick and point that out, so I just keep my mouth shut.

No that's a lie. Sorta. I do keep my mouth shut when people start talking about politics because my views are pretty unpopular right now so I don't want to get in an argument. But I wish they'd have the courtesy to do the same to me 90% of the time.

The only girls I've met recently are all coworkers and I won't go after one of them beacuse its just too awkward when it doesn't work, or any point after the part where I'm like "so..." good or bad.

Work sucked. printer was broke for the 1-hour machines, , so people were flooding the Kodak Picture Maker...

got home, beat Chaos Theory. had a real nice plot to it. put in double agent....and am amazed by what the xbox 360 can do. the graphics are just amazing, i like the hacking in this better than in chaos theory. very nice!!!!

picked my dad up season 3, 4, and 5 of 24 they were on sale at walmart $20 a season!

need to get my mom something nice, my sister wants to go half on a nice lcd monitor, think i'll do that. tomorrow morning going to a cheese place and get some nice cheese for my landlords.

if i call off on sunday, i won't have to go back in work til wednesday. switching hours with someone gives me tuesday off, which is nice, as i have monday off as a requested day off.

got a funny email from some recruiter this evening, about an IRR/recruiter job or something.

i hate going to bed. -_-

That's pretty much the same boat I find myself in, as well.

The was a fem co-worker (who I'm really attracted to) who I thought might be sending me some signals of interest a while back, but I was just way too damn busy with work at the time to try to pursue it at all... even if I did want to risk the awkwardness and uncomfortableness that would inevitably come if turns out I was totally wrong about her intentions. (Which I'm still not 100% sure I really want to do.)

We have gotten somewhat friendlier with each other in the meantime, though.

Maybe after New Years, when things finally start to slow back down for me again, if it seems she is still single, unattached, and even still mildly interested... I might just explore the situation a little further.

It could be a bit difficult to do properly, though: we only ever seem to interact when there's at least 5 other co-workers in the room. It's kind of hard to be all slick and put the moves on (not that I've ever been really able to do either of those things, of course...) with that large an audience, and several simultaneous conversations going on.

I guess I could approach the subject on the phone or in e-mail... but that just seems totally lame to me. It really seems like something that should be done in person, face-to-face.

Plus: that way, if I start to get a sense that I've read the situation all wrong, I can hopefully abort the mission before I go too far and make a total mess of things.

I'm not a gambler. Never have been.

I'm a control freak. I only like a situation that's as close to a sure thing as is humanly possible in this universe.

(Of course... the fact that I gave her the link to this thread way back at the beginning of the year, and as far as I know she could very well be reading this right now may have sealed my fate in that regard anyway... if she even recognizes herself in my statements... which I suppose I have now left zero doubt about at this point.

But that's really as big of a "leap of faith" as you are likely to ever get out of me, Crack...)

yeah find myself in same situation, only girls i see are coworkers, but it's a little different as there's different departments. there have been a few new ones come in they aren't bad looking, but i'm not around them enough to get to know them, don't even know their names. i'm not really a talker either, like i won't just go and start a conversation with someone i don't even know.

@ed: you should just ask her what she's doing on new year's eve and take it from there. If she's not doing anything, just say 'gooooooooooooood' in the darth sidious voice.

Finished Christmas shopping. I hate Malls.

Ed: Ok, so you like to be in control, that's fine. but 95% of life you can't control. EVER. Like, you need to be God or something to do that. It just won't happen.

Especially at your age man, just start wingin' it. Like I do. Every day. It's kinda cool.

Take 15's advice. See if you guys can't hang out New Years Eve. Seriously. Nothing major, just be all like "J0, wh@7 up? j00 |)0!|\|' @|\|y7h!|\|6 D3( 31?"

Exactly like that. In l337 sp3@k.

How do you pronounce that, exactly?

(I'm really just waiting for the day that l337 starts showing up on people's tombstones. That will be awesome.)

As for the rest: Yeah,.. we'll see. I'm not particularly stressed or worried about it.

It's all phonetic pronunciation.

I Am Legend: Meh? Wasn't a bad flick, but they coulda done a bit more. Wasn't scary in the slightest though. I was expecting more vampire scares, really. Meh. Wasn't the worst 2 hours of my life wasted.

Snow..... Oh god make it STOP.

Yeah... snow.

Tomorrow promises to be fun: Enough snow to make my morning lousy with several hours of sloppy clean-up, and making driving treacherous... but not nearly enough to cancel the concert.

So now I have my alarm set before 7:00 am so I can be sure to give myself enough time to dig out, and for the slow, slow ride back into work to be there by 11.

Yay.

Doo-Wop show tonight. Pretty simple. Not much else to say about it.

went in an hour early to work today...free overtime that i don't have to cut. it was busy, even with our printer down. people were buying cameras non-stop. at one point i sold 4 cameras in a row. the one lady i complain about cause she doesn't know what she's doing/acts stupid, well she was a no show today, so she is getting fired, unless she can come up with a legit excuse and evidence for said excuse. meaning.....more overtime for me most likely.

not sure about tomorrow, i'll probably make it in to work...regardless of the ice and snow. i don't even know how much is out there right now. i really want to call out cause my sister's 21st bday party is tomorrow, but that's not a valid excuse and since i invited my friend who also has to work 12-9, i'd get in trouble for sure.

My friend downstairs rented and is letting me borrow Call of Duty 4. it's pretty fun, but i die alot. i did good in 1 match so far, was able to call an airstrike. that was awesome!

i wanna play some Double Agent, but i'm freaking tired right now. hard to believe i played over 2 hours of CoD4.

I noticed a few more new girls working at walmart....all cashiers. meh.

It's a mess here so far. I have to go start cleaning off my car and the walks and driveway in about 10 minutes since I haven't heard anything about the show today being cancelled.

I really don't suspect I will either.

Well, looks like I'm not going to work today... not because the show is cancelled (it isn't...) but because all the streets around my neighborhood have yet to be plowed, and I can't seem to get off the side streets onto a main road.

After spending over 40 minutes stuck less than 2 blocks from my house, not being able to go forward or even turn around again, I called a co-worker who lives walking-distance from work and told him to take the shift.

It kills me to lose that $400... but there's no way I could ever get anywhere near work within 2 hours of our call-time now.

And I could have easily made it to the main road if some idiot hadn't stopped in the road ahead of me to talk to somebody. I was rolling along in the tracks a big truck had left earlier... but when I stopped is when I got stuck. I couldn't go forward,.. and I couldn't even turn around enough to try a different route.

When I finally dug myself out enough to be able to turn around, it was about 20 minutes before our call time at work, (not enough time to get there even on a clear day...) so I just made a bee-line for my driveway, and just said "****-it!"

Oh well. I'll do some laundry today, and head back to bed I guess. Might as well just try to make the day worth a **** at this point.

Plows finally came around 12:30... an hour after I supposed to start work. Golden.

Just rain right now. Sloppy evil wet mess out there. Just came in from clearing the enormous pile of plow-slush at the end of the driveway, before the temps plummet, and it froze solid. Whoo-Ha.

Been on the phone all day trying to troubleshoot technical problems from home. I should bill a fee regardless. Sounds like they're having fun today... the term "douche bag" came up more than once in reference to a member of the road crew.

Maybe missing work wasn't such a bad thing after all...

I wanted the money. XBox 360 fund, don'tchaknow?

Plus it's Aimee Mann... and while she's not one of my all-time super-faves, it's still usually a pretty good show.

it's snowing pretty nice here now. roads are a mess. i was able to leave at 6pm instead of 10pm, in time for my sister's 21st bday party, which only her boyfriend and our parents were there. double agent time!

We didn't get all that much it total... it's just the heavy, wet, slushy sloppiness factor that made it such a suck situation... the fact that it snowed 6 inches in a couple of hours, then immediately turned to sleet, then rain.

But reports from work make it sound like I was the only one who really had a difficult time travelling today. Everybody else seemed to make it in all right.

I probably could have too... IF the city had plowed my area in some kind of reasonable timeframe.

Think I can sue them for the loss of my working funds? How about time lost and sheer aggravation?

The roads just flat out suck. That, and there's those other stupid idiots out there in their fancy SUV's driving at 748926 billion miles per hour, riding your ass while you're in a FWD Chevy Cobalt and can realistically only go about 35 miles per hour.

F**kers.

Of course, the ride back home from work might be 10-times more dangerous than the ride in was: The temps around here dropped to below freezing this evening, and all that water on the roads just became black-ice.

I hope all my co-workers made it back home all right.

As pissed as I was about the situation today, that's really something I have no desire to see.

American football was interesting today.

Miami wins.. this ending their near perfect losing record

Cowboys lose, thus making home field advantage in the playoffs in jeopardy

Favre beats the all-time passing yardage record... with many thanks to the many yards after the catch from his recievers

With Seattle Seahawks loss, Packers clinch a first round bye in the playoffs.

GO PACK!

DAMN....played 1 level of splinter cell double agent....took me over 75 attempts to get it right trying to be a perfectionist (didn't want to sound alarms so i kept reloading game) i'm playing on normal difficulty, though there is easy mode, where's the fun in that.

Battle is a pure form of expression. It is heart and discipline, reduced to movement and motion. In battle, the words are swept away, giving way to actions-- mercy, sacrifice, anger, fear. These are pure moments of expression.

Not that I'm biased or anything...

who cares about those cheaters anyways

bears play tonight with Orton starting

I sense losing to gain draft picks is the new strategy

Farve also gained ground in padding his career interception record with 2 picks

The 21" widescreen flat panel monitor I got in October 2006 died yesterday. Which isn't cool.
