Is there some special way to get a RC # or do you just pick one and hope it's not taken?

Again sorry to distrub the dead but I was refering to the kit I am working on for the 501st and thought I would ask the experts on the subject, was I wrong??? I do like the game and play often but have yet to get on line having only had DSL a little while.
