inclement weather....

hehe, we finally had our first and probably only snow day here in SC. i've even got a couple of pics to prove it this time!!! at any rate, the town i'm living in is literally shut down almost completely. i can think of three businesses that are open today: Walmart, Steak N' Shake, and the Waffle House. maybe a couple of gas stations. all government offices, schools, and the two universities are closed for the day.

as for the thread, just post what your thoughts are about inclement weather and what happens in your neck of the woods.

anyways, here's the pics evidence:

Heh, lucky people those who have no work or school on snow days...why must I live in the middle of a big city that's used to snow and cold. ;_;

Anyway, that looks like sludge so it must be doubly annoying to get out. Yep, cold and wet at the same time >.<

It's freaking cold here for the next week or so. I know it's not as bad as say, Barrow, Alaska, but it's supposed to get about -10 to -20 F, wind chills -25 or colder this weekend, and we're going to get more snow. The National Weather Service has issued a special weather advisory on it already, and said it's going to be the coldest temps in the last decade. I need to move south.

Hey stingerhs--did everyone buy the stores out of milk and bread before the snow came?

Here in Chattanooga we got our first snow day in years. Still, it was hardly worth anything, only about 1-2 inches.

It amazes me the great lengths that people go to to buy milk (or water ) and bread before snow days. Even people here did that, and the snow is already nearly melted after less than 12 hours....

It hasn't snowed here in Scotland once, which is quite strange I thing...But I think the Highlands saw a bit of snow, but temperatures have been far away from freezing here almost all winter...

pretty much. and to add to the heartache, the stores raised prices slightly to cash in.

and, for the record, the snow has already melted on the roads.

inclement weather of any kind in Virginia frightens me because these people here are too retarded to deal with it

Wow, snow in South Carolina... I was much too young to remember it, but when I lived down there for my first couple years of life apparently it snowed one time and everything closed down.

We just got another three inches or so, and everything's still working. Snow days are nice, but we rarely get them here in Colorado. The snow had just started to melt from the end of december storm and here we go, two storms in a week. Grrr.... At least this means there'll be fresh powder, and since sunday's the super bowl, empty slopes. I love football.

On topic: we only got snow days in high school if more than 8 inches fell. At college, not even the december 3ft dump stopped school.

What Liayd said...we get snow all the time in winter but it is very rare that schools and other public places get closed because of this...last year we had a storm that left close to two feet of snow and I still had to go to work...but hey snow in SC, that's an event!

Anyway here's a pic I took two weeks ago while on a business trip to an Inuit village in the Canadian Arctic...at -51°C (taken from inside a building because the camera would refuse to function outdoors and I didn't wanted to take off my mitts)...the next day we hit -60°C:

(those who come from cold climates may be able to "see" that it was really cold from the way the smoke comes out from the chimneys and the fog it causes)

Ah, Louisiana. We got snow once in my lifetime. I was really young, but just old enough to remember it... I don't know, I guess I was about six or seven years old. I don't remember much, only the excitement at seeing snow. heh

I do recall an ice patch that formed between our house and our next door neighbors'. I remember because I slipped on it a bunch of times.

Another time when I was very young, we went on vacation to Colorado. I think I can remember some of it, but it may just me because we had pictures of me at a Children's Ski school on the wall in our hall. Though, I seem to recall falling a lot...

Anyway, as far as this year goes, the coldest its been is about 32F. Thats cold as far as I'm concerned having lived in Louisiana all my life. Many of you would probably think its summer. heh

Unfair!

I think its funny reading about how cities shut down when it snows a few centimeters. Right now, we have around 1.5 meters of snow, no sun and a centimeter of ice on the roads. Yet we don't get any days of, and football teams have practises outside. It's unfair! Aw well, at least we can ski.

It's been 7 weeks since I've seen any ground that wasn't artificially cleared off. This is the first time this has happened in the 21 years I've lived in Colorado. I have seriously had enough snow, it's about time for spring.

Agreed. It's like -18 Degrees Celsius (-0.4 Fahrenheit) with wind chill. I'm used to it in all, but I've had enough. Especially when you have to walk to work and classes.

Heh. stingerhs, you've gotta move to Vancouver. An inch of snow on the ground, and the entire city slams to a halt. BMWs and Mazdas slide sideways to their doom on every street corner...bus drivers take to wearing crucifixes and saying Hail Marys after every intersection...even if they're Buddhist or Hindu...

Ireland's still waiting for its first White Christmas in decades.

Erm...might want to recalculate that temperature reading. 20deg C is room temperature. 0deg C is freezing.

Since Commander Obi-Wan is from Edmonton, I believe that he meant -18 Celsius

I just don't know any Canadian who would say that 18 Celsius is cold in January...

Our temp right now is currently -8 F/-22 C and dropping. Wind chills are in the -30 F/ -34 C range right now. The _dewpoint_ is a whopping -20 F/-29 C, and the high for tomorrow may not make it above 0 F. We haven't seen temps that cold around here in a long time.

Err, yeah. Damn, I really should proof-read my posts before I post him. It's bad habit that happens to frequently.

The weather in Edmonton changes too much. It's warmed up, but it's snowing. Then when it stops it'll be colder. Then it's going to be in the "plus" temperatures for a day, then back down to what it is now. We could use some consistency in the weather. (mind you our hockey team could play with some consistency too)

We haven't put our grill away yet...of course, dislodging it from the snow and ice at this point is nigh on impossible.
My kids actually have a snow-day due to the extreme cold. I imagine they don't want kids walking thru - 25 to -35 F windchills.

Yeah, what's the point? You're gonna grill later in the week anyway, right?

It was very hard getting the grill started last night.
(kinda like the Bear's offense)

Unfortunately, the steaks, prawns, and kabobs were the best thing about the evening.

...oh, and that merlot wasn't bad either.

It's dangerously cold today. I'm usually one to joke about the winter, being from Wisconsin and all, but it's no joke today.

It's funny how gas prices increased last week. I have a feeling they'll drop once it warms up a bit. Supply and demand, I guess.

Yep, Jimbo, the family, and I, and probably Cygnus and Kitty, have battened down the hatches for another blizzard--blizzard warnings are up until 6p tomorrow.

Right now we're getting about 2-3 inches of snowfall per hour. We're expecting 12-16 inches, on top of the 4 or 5 we got yesterday....

Yes, I did buy bread this time, but that's just cause we were out at home. Also bought creamer for the coffee.

We're supposed to get a storm tonight through tomorrow night - but nothing happened yet. I've been off school all week for winter break, yet I would still love to have a Monday snow day.

Ever try to shovel 16 inches of snow? Seriously not fun.

I put the siding on this about two weeks ago. The weather was pretty terrible then. It was about 7 degrees every day I worked on it without the wind chill factored in. It's no negative 70 degree weather but still. It sucked hard.

Actually, I totally empathize with you. I spend a lot of my year in Colorado as well, the blizzards this year + a HUGE, 60 degree uphill driveway (it's a house in the mountain that unfortunately happens to be built on TOP of a mountain) = LOTS of shoveling .

Actually, I would have preferred snow to the wet, sloppy, slush that we received. I actually pulled something in my back Saturday pushing water around. (getting too old for this stuff)
My snowblower was rendered useless.

Then on top of that I had to go home after shoveling slush on Sunday and watch that terrible loss to Ohio ST. UHHHHG !!!

We'll meet them again, perhaps in the Big Ten Tourney.

I was surprised when I woke up Sun am, looked out the window, and said "Where the heck is the snow? Honey, did you shovel already?" "No, I haven't been out at all--we got ice."

I'd rather have 8 inches of snow than 1/4 inch of ice. If the storm had tracked about 50 miles south, though, we wouldn't have been a couple degrees above zero, and I think we would have gotten slammed.

From MST3K's spoof of "Hercules Unchained"--heard as Roman medic soldiers carry off an unconscious Greek Hercules on a 1950's Army green canvas stretcher: "Hi, we're IX-I-I. Did somebody dial IX-I-I?"

I've heard about the snow storms. Here, we got...rain. No, not freezing rain, hail-mixture or anything; just plain rain (mainly Spain).

But on the upside, it is upper 50s; I just wish it'd stay this way.

We barely got anything, so unfortunately school was in today. I think the storms just missed our county.

That would have been nice.
You don't have to shovel rain.
