But they remain movies and that's the key. Movies to entertain. Anyone with half a brain should have enough intelligence not to consider any of them a factual representation of real events.

What about the movie Gladiator then? Full of historical inaccuracies yet you wouldn't exactly know from the presentation. Same thing about the movie Miracle about the US' hockey team victory at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics which portrayed the Soviets as bloodthirsty killers, which of course is totally untrue.

You'll always have morons. No offense to montnoir's father's wife.

As for the accuracy in 300, since it's from a comic book...besides, there wasn't 1 000 000 Persian soldiers that day. It's quite possible that Greek historian Herodotus inflated the number to make it sound more glorious. From a military logistics perspective, 1 000 000 soldiers in that day and age seems impossible. It's less of an army and more of a huge mob.

By the way, for your personal education, Persians are not Arabs.

Sorry I can't give linkage, but I read an interview with Frank Miller where he said that rather than, (like say Troy) taking a myth and trying to sell it as real, he has taken a real event and made it into a myth. I thought that summed up 300 pretty well. It isn't historically accurate. It isn't even historical fiction. It's a simplified version of one of the more amazing battles in history.

For an amazing dose of historical fiction about this event, read Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield. One of the most amazingly touching and involving books I've ever read.

anyway, 300 the book rocked. 300 the movie will own you all

And Shepherds we shall be
For thee, my Lord, for thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand
Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In Nomeni Patri Et Fili Spiritus Sancti.

Well, I enjoyed the representation of Troy as a realistic (yet historically inaccurate) portrayal of the battle. I mean, even though I thought it might have been cool to have the gods actually fight in the battle, it was nice to have it from a strictly human perspective.

300 however, I think is going to be interesting because of the various beasties involved in the battle. Some guy had saw hands... and I think I saw a troll-ish man in there somewhere.

Yes...

Hmm... here is a preview of the film. Though it is only restricted to view for those who are in the U.S. Maybe it will pop up on YouTube...

300 seconds of 300

Holy crap that was amazing.

Did you see the quality of the battle choreography? Have they finally learned that breakaway filming and poorly spliced cuts for battles pisses off the masses?

I was actually catching details rather than the flash of a sword, the scream of some dude, the pained expression...it was like being there watching it rather than them trying to make you feel how frantic a battle is. You remain a spectator and are in awe at the spectacle.

God I hope other filmmakers pick up on this.

Right now 300 has a 100% rating from more than one critic at RT.

It's so awesome, we talked our latin teacher into scheduling the latin club to go see it Friday afternoon.

Being Greek, I don't care how historically inaccurate this is...I can pop down any excuse to get the whole family to go and see it .

From the trailers, it looks amazing. It has a lot of hype to live up to though.

Sweet. Though, I dunno if I want to spoil it.

IGN also gave this a perfect rating. Though, not like that means much since it's us who decide if the movie is great or not.

IGN 300 review.

So, is this movie just a bunch of gore glorified in fancy cinematography? That's all it appears to be.

Yep. The cinematography is maybe worth the cost of a ticket. Otherwise, it's chum for fanboys.

I'm not sure what else anyone would expect from a movie about a battle. It is a good show though, very stylized. I like movies that have a good art theme, and 300 has it. Besides, it's the only thing that has ever made me think that men who wear speedos are cool.

Don't get me wrong: the movie met the expectations that I had set for it, for the most part (*cough*lameending*cough*)

...but that doesn't mean that it isn't a fanboy movie.

And yes, it was very pretty.

It was awesome. Never read the comic, never really cared about Spartan history.

I could watch the battles nonstop, and the style of the movie was done very well. I'm pleased with the results.

Yep. 300 = $70 million. The other 9 = $66.92 million. It also took in about $7 mil overseas.

Oh, and he production budget was $65 mil. They should recoup their marketing budget by next weekend. Invest in Warner Bros next FQ folks

I'm late at posting this, damn cold, but I saw it last Saturday.

It was awesome and the theater was full. You'd be amazed how many "THIS...IS...SPARTA!" I've heard that evening hehe. Great movie, lousy on character development, but awesome visual style and fight sequence, which is what everyone is supposed to be looking for anyway. By the way, all the slave girls and other background hotties are from Montréal. I love my city hehe

By the way, I can't believe that with all the gore they actually gave it a 13+ rating here. Some kids were in the theater with their parents...good parenting eh...

Saw it last night. Entirely not enough blood or fighting.

It is exceptional visually, and I like how the story had more of a fairytale or mythical quality.

It satisfied on of my most important movie criteria...
The hero dies.
Best movie I've seen in a while. Might even buy it.
Two severed heads way up.

Ahhh, the best part of the movie...

No idea what you're talking about, Johnny.

Anyway, playing starcraft (yeah, I still play that bad boy) and I holed myself as Switzerland on a hill and held out against Germany, Austria, and the USSR, all the while quoting 300.

Eventually all of North Africa united and came to my rescue.

Neat lil 300 reenactment

I wonder if anyone's heard of This.

Quote:
An Iranian official on Sunday lashed out at the Hollywood movie "300" for insulting the Persian civilization, local Fars News Agency reported.

Javad Shamqadri, an art advisor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accused the new movie of being "part of a comprehensive U.S. psychological war aimed at Iranian culture", said the report.

Shamqadri was quoted as saying "following the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Hollywood and cultural authorities in the U.S. initiated studies to figure out how to attack Iranian culture," adding "certainly, the recent movie is a product of such studies."

The movie's effort wound be fruitless, because "values in Iranian culture and the Islamic Revolution are too strongly seated to be damaged by such plans", said the Iranin official.

Shamqadri, who is also a filmmaker, said that production of more domestic and artistic films which portray Iranian achievements is a proper response to movies like "300".

I was finally able to see 300 the other night. I enjoyed it. Though, I absolutely agree with Prime, clearly not enough fighting or gore or blood. But, for what was there, I enjoyed it. I also wish it was a bit longer, but hey, you can't have everything.

I give 300, TWO thumbs up.

Something interesting:

I was reading the Times of India yesterday, where they give two movie reviews: one from their critic and a number of quick SMS reviews sent by the viewers. Two of these "reviews", highlighted in all their glory caught my eye:

Quote:
The movie is superb! The action scenes were awesome and Mel Gibson's acting is unparalleled. 300 rules!
Quote:
An awesome half-artistic movie. Mel Gibson as that king was very realistic. Another excellent movie by an excellent guy!
Had me laughing in splits.
