9th party member... [spoilers]

I played KOTOR a few times, (sometimes lights, sometimes dark), but I never managed to get the 9th party member... I think it's that sith-guy you run into at Manaan (under water complex)...is he? And how do you get him? He always wants to kill me...

The party members are:
Carth
Bastila
Mission
Zaalbar
T3M4
Canderous
Juhani
HK47
Jolee

As far as I am aware only Juhani and HK47 are optional. Which one are you missing?

Juhani is the Dark Jedi cat woman on Dantooine who you fight in the grove as part of one of your tests to become a Jedi. If you turn her back to the Light rather than kill her she will join you later.

HK47 is the rust-red Assassin/Protocol Droid in Yuka Laka's Droid Shop on Tattooine which you can use to negotiate a peaceful solution to the quest with the Sand People (much to his dismay).

Yeah, it can be only one of those two. And HK-47 can be easy to miss...

And Juhani, easy to kill.

HK is kinda hard to miss. Juhani can be missed w/o missing any quest really, except for her personal story. Personally she is really ugly when it comes to Cathars, and I really don't understand why xor would want to molest such an ugly kitty, though that does explain Juhani's preference on females.

Is HK optional, though? You cannot communicate with the sand people without him, and you need directions to the deeper deserts from them. I suppose you could mercilessly slaughter the entire camp, though I can never bring myself to do so, not even as DS (since there is more experience in it )

it's possible without HK, sure. i did it in my last playthrough. mind you, that didn't stop me buying him anyway anyway, i'm betting it's Juhani that's been missed, she seems the most likely candidate.

I had HK when I had to do that mission, but I just slaughtered the whole camp. I have no problem with that. Though, it took a while.

But, otherwise, everybody has mentioned the other characters.

I did it the politically correct peaceful way my first time through the game. After that I just slaughter them all dark or light side play throughs.

I grabbed HK and made peace with the Sand People Tribe with my DS Revan. (Note though that it was only ONE tribe.)

Hey, I wanted to manlipuate the Sand People to learn more about them, and about their Rakatan masters in the past.

I tend to take the same approach either way: I get HK and go through the entire diplomatic thing. Then, at the end, once I've heard from the storyteller and so on, I go back to the leader and apologize for killing his people and stealing their clothes to enter the camp. That always prompts a fight, but doesn't come with DS points, because you're admitting to your actions, and so the sand people are the ones taking the offensive. Then I have no choice but to kill them all, since they will attack on sight...

I may be LS, but that doesn't mean I don't want all the stuff in the camp, and this is the way to do it without taking DS points

As is asking the wrong question to the storyteller.

But seriously, Juhani is kinda nifty. Game-wise, she's a Guardian (so she can pounce on enemies) with strong stats. She's flashy, wickedly strong in a fight, and doesn't need a stealth belt (so she's an awesome choice to scout ahead in enemy territory, or clean house during the big breakout).

HK-47 is probably the most hillarious character Bioware's put out since Ranger Minsc, and just as berserk. Gleefully homicidal droid that has a rather colorful history if you have enough repair skill to get him to recall the story.

That's why the first time I play a game, I look at every nook and cranny. So, I know where every thing is, and for future reference, skip parts I find unnecessary or pointless.

Ironically I didn't purchase HK-47 the first time I played through K1. I totally didn't take notice in Yuka Laka's shop. I did realize I missed a party member somehow and it was when I called my brother and compared our playing experiences, he asked me what I thought of HK-47 and that is how I found out how to get him. Of course my brother thought HK-47 was the funniest character in the game.

The first time I played TSL, I was missing one part to HK-47 from being finished. I figured that out after I completed the game by going back to a save in the middle of the game and trying to find things I didn't notice the first time. What I was missing was checking out Kodin's inventory on Nar Shaddaa. Of course I was thrown off by thinking more HK-50 units would confront me my first play through to get the final part I was missing which never happened.

I remember the first time I played TSL, I missed the Vocabulator! Peragus is the only place that it's possible to get it. I only figured out that I missed it when my brother played through and he picked up the HK-50's remains. When I saw that, I was just like, "I am such an idiot..."

Haha, yeah that was with me as well. I didnt what i had to do or where to go to get it. Then my little cousin played it and he had more sense than me to actually pick up his remains and he found it.

Never had that problem though. Maybe I have the correct mentality of "looting the daylight out of ANYTHING you kill" strongly branded into my mind. I would try to loot anything I kill, even a gizka. I mean, looting is part of the fun!

As for THE SAND PEOPLE. It is just as easy for a LS jedi to slaughter everyone in the camp without a DS point. For the DS, do the same thing and get the Xp for listening to the story, then just tell them you want to slaughter the camp. In my opinion it is a must to kill 'me all. That it the ONLY WAY you get the pearl back after hearing the story. Oh, you get back BOTH the chief's stick, and a special one from the storyteller. I mean, even for the LS Revan, it won't be unreasonable to try touching a wicket, or ask for a story repeat.

I never had any of those problems either. I guess I've just played so many CRPGS and Adventure games that I've long since learned to collect and explore EVERYTHING, as well as talking to absolutely EVERYONE, including the little jawa lurking in the back of the bar... No, he won't say anything interesting, but you won't know that until you've tried...

Well, I didn't care much for XP, so I saved, gave the peral to hear the story, then reloaded. I don't think my DSM Revan is a mass murder and genocider. He actually likes to go and have peaceful relations with other tribes (and won't try to agonize them), as to manlipuate them. Eh. Each Revan's idea to his own.

Haha, I bought HK on my first playthrough, but it was plain luck. I though he would run away or explode like that droid you buy from Janice on Taris.

What I did miss (almost) completely, was Tatooine cantina. Fortunately, I was able to get in there after getting almost all Star Maps (Just two), and I was then, able to finish Bastila romance.

Again, something else I've nearly missed. Since we can just get some pieces late on the game, I was beggining to get worried I had forgot something. Thankfully, I did not.

For some reason when I first play, I have the instinct to NOT collect the starmaps after I finish a world. I stand right next to it and yet I decide to go off to another planet, and collect them later. Tattooine is one such place where I leave the starmap alone, though I think I did collect the starmap right away on Manaan. Maybe thats the reason why I get most of the quests done in my first playthru.

Oh, I understand why: The mere though of having to walk all that undersea part again, facing Firaxas, crazy Selkath and malfuctioning droid is terrifing. The worst part however, is doing that all in super-slow speed.

I totally missed Hk on my first playthrough, but I think I got him the second time. I only learned about the negotiating after reading the Prima game guide, so I would usually kill the lot of them, now I like to maintain peacefull relations even if it means I don't get my pearl powered saber. One thing about those quests that always bugged me was I never got to put my Tusken outfit on outside of the Dune Sea, I always wanted to take the Leviathan dressed in the Sandpeople ensamble. As is said before, it's either Juhani you are making the mistake of killing or HK-47 you are making the mistake of not buying. After all, Juhani is great to ahve eround on the Starforge when you are getting mobbed. And HK-47 is nice to have around if only for the fact that you get your own assassin droid with flamethrower attachments.
