Star Wars MMO: Copyrights Problems, Interest?

After the silly rumor that popped up stating that Star Wars is going to make a KOTOR MMO...I decided that the only way to stop these rumors from popping up is to create some sort of MMO that would get people to...well..stop making rumors.

1) Is it legal? What I want to do is have the MMO exist, and not cost any money, and that the copyright notice would be that it it is all IP and that it is a fan game. Only money that will be made is via banner ads and google ads. If it isn't legal, then shut down this project.

2) Would you guys actually play it?

Here's the concept: A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far away, the Jedi Order exiled a bunch of misfits who realized that the Dark Side is far more powerful. These misfits head over to Ziost, and called themselves Sith after the native species.

After a passage of time, there are two major powers in the universe, the Republic and the Sith Empire. Of course, neither power know where the other one is located, but they can deduce that the other side exist and that they hate the other side. Sooner or later, they'll find each other, and then start blowing each other to smitherrens.

You play as a Merchant, aligned with either the Republic or the Sith Empire. You could just make a ton of cash just mining stuff and then selling it to your ally. But you could also help out your side by claiming planets and governing it. You can lead military invasions against your enemies. You can blow planets up. You can recruit "Force Users" to assist you, Jedi or Sith. Basically, your goal is to become the most powerful Merchant and rule the galaxy!

The time where this takes place is somewhat near the Great Hyperspace War, about 5000 years Before the Battle of Yavin.

Okay. So the concept might actually be too...dry. But it could work. It's better than playing as thousands of Jedi...time for the other more important roles to shine. Besides, if you become very powerful, you get the title of "Senator". Who wouldn't want to RP as a Senator of an ineffective political body?

I just want to know if you guys would like it or not.

From what you've said it sounds like and MMORTS, but then you also said you could RP in it, which sounds rather difficult. Also, you'd need to get servers for it, and those things aren't cheap.

Would there be quest system in the game, or would it be just 'Get stuff and show off the size of your PvPness'?

That having been said, it just doesn't sound like my cup of tea, I'd probably try it out and just end up going back to WoW.

Well you can't make a game based on Star Wars without LucasArts consent. They'd be very quick to put a stop to that. I mean they won't even let you make Star Wars mods for other games. :/

Its an interesting concept but would you be able to develop something so involved? I don't mean to question your skill since I don't know what level you're at but it would be quite an undertaking. Another thing is the legality, which I'm not completely sure about but I could see it getting shot down if it started to make some noise.

I play WoW anyways.

No, it wouldn't be legal unless consent of Lucasfilm/LucasArts/Lucas Licensing is obtained. And that won't happen.

Based off what you have outlined, no, I most likely wouldn't play it.

With legality out of the question and lukewarm support (at most), it's obivous this project is doomed.

It is good that I at least did a feeler to understand if it is indeed possible. Thanks all for your comments!

just go to the swcombine lol if that even exists anymore...

Battle is a pure form of expression. It is heart and discipline, reduced to movement and motion. In battle, the words are swept away, giving way to actions-- mercy, sacrifice, anger, fear. These are pure moments of expression.

If it's free hey I'll play it, can't be any worse than WoW and the likes, and they actually want you to pay for it, ha!

Of course, LA/LF would never let you get away with it anyways...
