why do i get this warm, fuzzy feeling that i'm in some way being targeted here?? >_>

anyways, i don't see any point in trying to argue that us moderators are power-hungry-megalomaniacs. its not that far from the truth. we're here to provide you folks with an atmosphere that you can be welcome to post you're thoughts without having to wade chest-deep through spam, flaming, or otherwise incoherent nonsense just to find a good discussion.

and don't forget that we like to join in the discussions as well. its not because we have an agenda. we're people, and we have our opinions, too. keeping us at arms length is more or less your own private issue than anything else, IMHO.

anyways, that's my two pennies on this thread.

Post Of Gods and Mods

I've played a few Browser-Based MMORPG's where I've been in control of a lot of forums, Shadow Ops, Modern War Generals, Final Destruction. I've also been the Leader of a WoW guild named Grim, and I've been the head admin for that forum for awhile.
I also work at a place where Customer Service is a MUST, so I know how to deal with people.
And I've been a member of numerous forums, Star Wars, DBZ, Movie Forums, etc.

Moderators\Admin:
The Good : Being a good mod isn't hard. You just have to be level-headed, and friendly.
-I used an instant message service when I spoke with some people. AIM, MSN, even Ventrillo. Its much easier than just Private Messaging people back and forth. I also got tons more contacts now because of it too > . < You may want to merely create a screen name completely for that form.
-Try not to get too wrapped up into debates, simply post your opinions and compliment others on theirs when you find time to.
-Don't get wrapped up in editing every single curse word, rude comment, or mistake. And give people a PM before you edit their posts, it helps a lot.
-Don't immediately intervene in arguments if they aren't that bad off, 50% of the time they work themselves out.
-Use a lot of smily faces
-Use spell-check :P
-If you catch yourself flaming someone else, you apologize.

The Bad : These are the people that sit at their computers 24/7 and don't have ANY social skills.
-They will edit every single fine detail in all posts until its left as dry as a sidewalk during summer.
-They take a REEEAAALLY long time to message you back, they don't use any type of instant chat service to speak of, and when they finally contact you back, you never end up feeling relieved.
-They can't handle losing in an argument\debate.
-They over-exert their power constantly.
-They act VERY strict.
-They follow the forum rules like it was a bible.
-They don't use the word please.
-They flame.

EX of THE BAD:
"Hello, It has come to my attention that you have been constantly using the word "@$$" in your posts. Disguising this word to avoid the auto-block is not tolerated. Use of that word is unacceptable, as line 53 of paragraph 2 in forum rules states that this is now allowed. This is the link for the forum rules: www.analmod.com. Read the rules before you decide to post again."

Well, you're special, jmac. We'll let you skate for now. I'm not sure how Niner feels about ownership, though.

Not much of a point in warning them IMO, since as the post will be edited/snipped either way there's not really much to be warned of. (That and posts get edited fairly frequently - it would take way too long to write all those PMs)

As many rude comments as possible should be edited out, preferably all of them - it's much more enjoyable to post on a forum when people aren't acting nasty towards each other.

Not true. A pretty big number of the mods here have kids/are married/have demonstrated having lives - there aren't many I can think of who don't have any.

At least some social skills are a definite must - the job involves quite a bit of dealing with people.

Might you be stereotyping here? I'd be very surprised if you've seen mods do all that in the two weeks or so you've been here. LF is quite different in that respect from most other forums.

People get angry when they see that there is somthing missing in their posts, im saying if you making a major edit, then PM them. If its not that big you shouldn't need to.

I've been on multiple forums, ones about Anime, DBZ, Movie thread forums, super-hero forums, music forums, gaming forums. I've seen a lot of mod-abuse. (I think I said that on the VERY tippy-top of my post.)

I also have to say that I'm a bit hurt that you think that now that I have a title that is entirely meaningless outside of this tiny spot on the internet, I'd 'turn on you.' I honor our friendship much more than that.
Look, I have had some realy bad experiences with moderators though out the internet. I do not believe I helped in the manner in which I did not get into specifics. Most of the moderators I have delt with in the past have been rude, annoying, and frustrating to deal with. Several times I have made friends with another forumite, on various sites, and then they become apart of the inner circle. After a few months on the job, they end up changing their personality. Instead of acting like a forumite, they turn into a dictator from hell. They pull a Jackle and Hyde over night. Drawing from my experiences from all over the internet, I just do not trust anyone to stay humble when they become moderator. Not everyone online has the same experiences.

My intention was not to intentionally hurt anyone. I just wanted people to understand that not everyone had the same forum experiences as others.

ChAiNz.2da and you have been very kind. However, I do believe that there is a disconnect that occurs when someone becomes a moderator. Even though they do not want to admit it, the moderators do end up changing their perspective once they get a title. They become more authoritive and rule driven. As they try to keep the peace in the forums, they become shrouded by rules and regulations. Eventually, they end up trying to control everything with an iron fist. Its an irony.

Factual.

Anyone expecting a PM for every mod edit and is angry when they don't get one is going to be angry here. We do not have the time for this.

That may be to a certain small extent--you do have to look at posts a bit differently as a moderator. You also have to interact with other members in a professional capacity, and you never have to do that as a forum member. However, it's not that often that I have to do something significant, and I make more posts about something in one of the threads here than I do about moderator stuff.

Makes me wonder how exactly Mac can accurately predict everyone's mindset as they become moderators. Also makes me wonder what exactly happens when one gets promoted to administrator. I dunno, I can't see anything from behind my standard-issue Rules & Regulations Shroud™, which I got upon my promotion to moderator, as well as the Idiot's Guide to Being a Forum Dictator©.

After reading some of the posts here, I can say that being a mod myself, people do treat you differently than they do at sites where you're not a mod. That comes with the territory. You also have to read posts differently and play police every now and then. At FileFront it seems like I'm playing police way more often than I am at Phatooine. Every site is different and gets different types of users. I do think we got a good group of users here at Holowan in general and a great set of mods that are looking over us. Makes it desirable to want to be here.

Er...

This is my view on Admins. Not about moderators, but the site has a list of profiles of all sort of personalities, and each Moderator action is determined by his or her personality.

Needless to say, I am a firm supporter of Moderator powers.

Being an Admin or Mod isn't special. You have to actually do work, or else get demoted. Staff members (usually) have to know and obey the rules as well.

I think the best type of moderators you can have are those who really don't want it, but do it for the love of the community. Be a member first, a mod second, and only use mod powers when a situation needs to be taken care of.

To tell you guys the truth, my job at FileFront can really drain me at times because of the responsibilities that I have to do. I do have a special love for it just because I served it. Anything you serve, you learn to love, but yet it can be very tiresome at times.

Well said Shem. I have positions of power within my group org at school and I mod some forums as well. I know the adage that power goes to the head is true, I've see it happen but if you love being with the group enough, it won't turn you into the dictator everyone fers.

My addition to this would be that the best mods are those who accept the position because they understand the responsibilities it implies.

Wait a tick.. are you insinuating that I'm a llking tha 'naughty' peeps hehehe

Whatever stories you've heard, well.. err.. about 95% of them are true... but I'll deny them anyways

--------------------

As far as topic goes.... as much as I'd like to say I haven't changed one bit, I know that isn't true. To what extent however I think would differ between each and every person...

While I try to be member first, mod second... I realize and admit that I have that 'tiny voice' in the back of my head constantly looking over posts for "Is that spam.. was that flaming/trolling... was that... etc". However this was/is asked of a moderator.. it comes with the position.

I hope I haven't become empirical about it.. and godz forbid If anyone thinks I've become unapproachable.. PLEASE know that just isn't the case. I'm a bit scatterbrained granted, but I try to eventually answer PM's or comment on something ..

I can see The Sources' point of view though.. and I kinda understand about the distancing part.. though I think it's definitely a 2-way path that isn't necessarily 'a given'.
I would hope the friends I have would remain that way no matter the circumstances... but I also can't deny that it takes both parts of the equation to make sure that is indeed what happens.

It's a slow drift apart and unfortunately not too many people catch on to it before you're just past the horizon. Doesn't mean you can't paddle your ass off to close that drift though now does it?

Ah yes the age long question...

I don't think I've changed that much. Though the time when I became moderator slightly coincided with my switch from raging leftist to moderate center-right. Ahem, politics aside, every forum is indeed different. Every forum in the LFN network has a great pool of forummites. Generally speaking, after a few days or weeks ruling with an iron fist before and after the release of a game, things die down and peace is restored. In fact, a campaign of fear is not such a bad idea. Remember kids, this is not a free country, it's a brutal dictatorship led by Gestapo officers in the form of moderators, demi-gods in the form of Super-Moderators and Gods in the form of Administrators. Fear us peons! Fear us!

Wow, that went from nice to megalomaniac.

Anyway, we're quite lucky here. We got a great staff and a great community. I've been to a lot of places and frankly, I could never leave this one. People here are too nice. And there's a lot of women. Ahem.

I love you man.

Whatever stories you've heard, well.. err.. about 95% of them are true... but I'll deny them anyways

Good point man. I can allways count on you to be honest.

This place has been inactive for a few days, but that's about to change. I'm in need of some technical assistance. Namely, the forum me and my friend are setting up is in PHPBB, hosted for free there. Now, what I need help is updating the version of PHPBB to 2.0.22, since the current one is 2.0.21. If anyone knows his way around PHPBB forums, I'd appreciate the instructions on properly uploading the new version of the code via FTP using Total Commander. Thanks in advance.
