Well, it was a rainy day in Washington
Well, Seattle, Washington has been notorious for years as being a really wet and rainy city. Well, these last few days and what is sure to be the next two or three, Seattle will live up to it's name.
But anyway, there has been a ton of rain, lots of accidents, flooding, roads turned into rivers. And it's been constantly raining everywhere for the last 20+ hours. On Saturday it snowed, then it melted, then it started raining.
Anyway, for those who care here is a new story about our Governor declaring a state of emergency. I wouldn't go that far, but it has been hella wet.
http://www.king5.com/topstories/stor....62b42878.html
tl:dr - Seattle... it's been raining a freaking lot.
But anyway, that's not the only reason why I made this utterly boring thread. The interesting part is what happened to my dad today at his work.
So my father works at the technology HQ thingie at T-Moblie, basically where they have a ton of servers and stuff. I've been in their main server room, basically row after row of multi-million dollar servers that make as much noise as a ship engine room and miles and miles of fiber optic and CAT5 cable everywhere.
But basically things started to get bad at his place when the waters started to flood the parking lots around the place. So they contacted the DOT probably and started filling sand bags and evacuating people. My dad stayed to help, so for around 8 hours my dad worked like a construction worker filling sand bags, far from his normal white-collar position.
They had sand bags everywhere in the office building, doors and hall ways and entrances and loading docks were all blocked. So after putting in a ton of labor my dad got to go home. When he got back he called his co-worker to tell him that he got home okay. That's where he learned that the water had broken through and filled parts of the building with two feet of water.
They had a plan to cut out the power if it broke through, but they were too late and the water got to the generators and other power box thingers, shorting everything. So they may have broken a lot of expensive things from this. That's all I know right now, but it'd be nice to get some photos or something, but don't know if that's likely.
tl:dr - $1 million Servers and generators + Water = Bad

I am curious as to why you pointed out that your father had to perform blue collar work.

I'd actually be really interested in seeing the pictures for this.

Because he and is family is well above the blue collar workers in status. Doing such grunt work is well worth of note for him. Having to work like a poor person! What a laugh!

Guys, construction workers are not always poor, and people who don't do manual labor can often make less money than those who do. Why do we even care anyway, it's not like he's denigrating the laborer. He's just stating something that struck him as out of the ordinary to help illustrate his point about how bad the water problem was. Get over it.
That sucks for the company you dad works for, TiE... I hope they have flood insurance!

I highly doubt they use servers that cost more than a million USD apiece...
If they did, I'll avoid investing in T-Mobile :-p
They could've been racks and racks of blade servers though...

Okay, imagine a room that a little smaller than a football field. Then fill it up with row after row of refrigerator sized server boxes. So I'd guess around 30-40 rows of around 20-25 server units each. So we're looking at 600-800 server cabinets, with 5-15 server blades each. Really, it's really freaking big and expensive.
But anyway, for all you blue-collar vs. white-collar whiners, I'm not trying to make a negative comparison between the two. You can have men out in the field making more money than some dude in an office building. I'm just saying it would be like seeing an0 IT dude loading sand bags in a rain storm... and that's what happened.
But anyway, he was on the news indirectly. http://www.king5.com/video/index.html?nvid=198023&she=1
If you can even get the video to run he is in two shots of people doing stuff in the rain, I think there are two guys with orange jackets, my dad is in the slightly brighter orange. He didn't have a jacket, so he borrowed one.

That the impression I got at first as well.
I just watched the video... I had no idea this was even going on. That's some pretty crazy stuff right there.

No, there's a million $1 servers. Got them from some korean on the street.
That's some crazy rain. I think I've been in a storm like that maybe once, it wasn't actually as bad as this, but pretty bad flooding.

My question is, why place expensive equipment on a floor that can easily be flooded should it happen, in a city that is renowned for heavy rain?

It's not so much that, it's the mobile homes. If your house can be moved by an F-250, why would you think a giant **** tornado wouldn't hurl that ****er down the trailer park?
