Question Alex Irvine to write first KotOR novel

Alex Irvine has announced on his blog that as a result of the recent renewal of the contract between LucasBooks and Del Rey he will be writing the first KotOR novel. Mr. Irvine has indicated the book's timeline will be set immediately prior to the events of Knights of the Old Republic though he doesn't say if he is referring to the comic book series or the video game. Mr. Irvine's novel is currently scheduled for release in the fall of 2010. Here's to anxious hope for the successful expansion of the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic franchise.

Me so happy!!!

Hopefully a whole new series of books set during the KotOR era will pop up. It just goes to show you that KotOR still isn't dead.

I definitely hope its based on the game. I feel like reading a novel based on the comics would just be repetitive. Plus, I do enjoy the comics very much, but the game's story is second to none.

I say about freaking time the EU actually started delving into the KotOR Era. If we're lucky, we may get some canonical information on Revan or the Exile.

I wouldn't bet on it, but we can always hope.
Anyways, if I ever end up seeing it somewhere, I'll pick it up.

I dislike the comics, myself so I hope this is about the game. In any case, this should add some good content to work with for fanfiction. In any case, KotOR-era literature is something I'm interested in reading, as much as I had given up on Star Wars books. xD

/yes, I know that Thrawn trilogy is awesome and I should read it.

I'm just glad this won't be counted as a Kotor III and it's wrote prior.

Otherwise my Thesaurus would've got a dusting and LA would've received a very intellectually written letter just completely full of obscenities. All arranged in a nicely formatted setting, of course.

Will be sure to get the book however. If I ever see it around my area.

I'll wait till I see some plot synopsis before I make a decision, I know it's only a brief statement but he's gonna need more than a summer in 77' to get a KotOR era Novel right, there's GAotS, TotJ, KotOR I-II and the current comics to blend in with and hopefully compliment. But it sounds great and I'll def be Buyin!

Aside from the games, obviously. And though I may have neglected to mention it (sorry about that), the comics don't cut it for me.

At least it's a fresh blood writer, let's see how cool he can make this! It's not even impossible to make a first person Revan novel. After all, there are no pictures in those books...and the Revan from before Kotor 1 is pretty much a 'set' canon character, whilst the Kotor 1 revan is open for imagination.

I'd hate to see the Legacy writers take this on. Getting sick of the way they wrote down the franchise.

I'm hoping for the best for this novel but it seems somewhat strange to me to think that the lead writer for KotOR is penning Darth Bane novels and another author will be writing not only the first KotOR novel but his first Star Wars novel as well. If the KotOR novel is to be set immediately before the events of the video game I would have preferred Karpyshyn but what's done is done and I wish Mr. Levine the best in this landmark endeavor. I'm almost guaranteed to buy this book whenever it comes out in paperback.

Apart from the Bane novels, the UE has been in the KOTOR with the comics for quite a while. It has plenty of information regarding the early days of Revan, Carth, Vandar, Vrook, Karath, the biker gangs, and others. There is quite a bit of detail about the times just as the mandalorians start to invade...

I really hope the novel is based on the first KOTOR game. One of these days I hope that George Lucas would give someone permission to make a movie based on the first game also.

I'd say a TV series is more likely than a film, but I share the feeling!

This book sounds... interesting. Like others, I think i'll wait to hear more, but i'm glad of one thing...

IT'S NOT BEING WRITTEN BY TRAVISS!

Sorry, just needed to get that out of my system.

A KotOR era movie is a nice idea, but would NEVER be able to live up to our expectations.

If ANYTHING (unlikely) happens in the way of TV/movie, my money's on a sort of cartoon.

(Like the old Star Wars Clone Wars thing they aired a few years ago.)

I'm excited about this. I like everything KotOR related, and I'll be following this very closely. It also shows how popular the KotOR Meta-series is, and that Lucasfilm is prepared to expand it. Let's hope it'll be as good as the games and the comics.

And maybe they'll wrap it up with a nice showtune and an Atton dream sequence featuring Jefforson Starship to add a little excitement as well.

This sounds exciting, I'm praying that is is based off the game though- I like the comics fair enough but I'd rather not read a novelized version of something I've already read, or don't feel like reading without comic pictures. =P

I'd say a TV show would be better. You'd have to strip out a lot of stuff for a film. But then again, a lot of the side quests should be stripped out.

Film. I could direct it. It'd be huge.

Although as much as i absolutely love Kotor, i could make an amazing movie with the Dark Forces saga. Take Star Wars back to the old original trilogy days with less combat and enticing story.

Well, it would depend on how closely whoever would do it followed the story, getting good actors (if they did it live action), or hire the original voice actors if not. It would also depend on well they handle the "revelation" scene. You definitely got to go light side on this one because a good redemption story would sell along with a good twist.

A basic idea would be to start around the time where Bastila's strike team boards Revan's flagship and after the betrayal, I would cut it showing Bastila having to make a choice and then have a text message letting you know it's been a year and then show the scene where Bastila requested to have "our hero" transferred on the Endar Spire and go from there.

If you think about it though, the media would tear a kotor movie to shreds. A movie about one man being the hero, a climactic battle to destroy a colossal space station at the end, Vandar, etc. These things are unique to us but the media will draw a dumb line between these and the original films and instantly say that it had no originality, Star Wars is dying etc.

But who cares about them. Make it Shem!

Great, I hope a successful novel.

Then a successful sequel.

Then a successful trilogy.

Then a new video game. Great, just in time for my new X-box 1440.

See, it would be the perfect idea to have this novel be about Revan and Malak. That would take the pressure off of Dark Horse to put them in their comics since they'd have to give Revan a canonical face, thus ruining the feeling of him being a personal character for many fans. If the comic follows Revan, they wouldn't have to mention what he looks like, and readers can envision him looking however they wish.

Well, you can make a 2 hour movie with the basic plot of happens in the game. The thing is you will have to cut out a lot of side quests. Like after escaping the Endar Spire, have Carth and "our hero" skip doing the dueling arena, skip having to find a costume to get to the lower city, skip collecting the bounties, skip finding the Rakghoul disease cure. You get the idea.

So when the escape pod crashes, it crashes in the lower city instead of the upper city and Carth takes our hero and hides in an abandoned apartment there. After waking up and getting to the chase, you run into Mission who is in trouble and she explains she needs to get Big Z back. You help find him and he pledges the life debt. You learn about Gadon and Mission takes you to him and learn about Bastila's fate from there. You enter into the swoop race (skip finding the accelerator) and win Bastila's freedom, even if you end up killing Brejik.

You catch the attention of Canderous and he then offers you the deal and you purchase T3-M4, break into the Sith base and get the codes and then go to Davik's base and escape just before Malak bombards the planet. There's Taris in a reasonable time period and you have a strong beginning.
