Looking for laptop suggestions

I'm thinking of buying a small - less than 14" - and rather lightweight laptop that I'll use mainly for browsing the net, banning trolls from LF and personal/business stuff when I'm out of home.

I'm trying to stay reasonable here and find something that will fit my real needs (and not just my "created" needs...setting d3 loose in a computer store is like setting a young child free in a candy store ) at a reasonable price (ideally $500-$1000 but my budget always has strong "elastic" capabilities). I am not looking for a gaming PC (pointless since I am looking for something small). However some multimedia capabilities aren't totally unwelcomed for curing the occasional boredom...

Some of the laptops that I have been looking at are those:

- this Asus 10" EEE PC:
http://sohodiffusion.com/produit.asp?num=10427 (decent HHD size for me...I don't need something huge. I am a bit worried about the 600px vertical resolution though... I definitely don't want anything smaller as I like to be able to see as much info as possible on my screen...constantly having to scroll to see a document can be annoying.)

- http://sohodiffusion.com/produit.asp?num=10469 (also interesting but apart one extra G of Ram, a more "pro" look and a fancy fingerprint system which I won't use, it doesn't seem to have much more than the EEE PC. )

- Dell Vostro: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/prod...310&l=en&s=bsd

- DellXPS 1330 (a bit beyond my strict needs but there's no point from removing all the fun out of life ) : http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/...n&OC=NX13_F_1E

Any other suggestions? (and no newegg I'm in Canada so when it comes to online PC shopping it's either this store or this one or manufacturers. )

If I was buying a new, smaller screened laptop right now I would definitely go with an XPS1330 deal. (A new deal on it seems to pop up every week or two) I've heard nothing but love for them and I was actually trying to buy one before I happened upon a clearanced Gateway laptop at Bestbuy and went that route instead.

And the color options. OH THE COLOR OPTIONS. *swoons*

Very solid little laptops and plenty sexy. A perfect match for Darth333s everywhere.

Might I suggest this one: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en...4-3744116.html ?

Yeah, the display is slightly larger than you wanted, and it has more then enough RAM and HD space for what you said you want to do. The processor mmay not be all that awesome, but for browsing the web and other things like that.

Looks about right for your "occasional multimedia needs" too.

I got a Pink Hi-Grade one for my fiancee a while ago, and thought it's a 15.4" screen, I love the resolution (1280x800) and it's pretty thin, quiet and has good battery life IMO...

It was around 400, which would be about $800 or maybe a bit less now.

If the word gets spread that I use a pink Laptop I shall personally hunt you all down and destroy you, secret apprentice style!!!

I'd never dare comment on it, Neg.

Thanks but I'm really looking for something smaller than a 15.4" screen. 13.3" would be ideal for me.

I'm already blonde so no pink please...I'll leave that color for the guys!

I am currently leaning towards the Dell XPS 1330 (Rhett is right, it's damn sexy!)...though I saw this one today: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0108707&catid=

It comes with a rather decent GFX card, a rare thing for such a small laptop (yeah screw the "basic" needs and the so-called budget). I just don't like the the fact that the DVD drive is external but it is very lightweighted (1.6kg with battery). Anyone has experience with LG laptops?

I have Asus eeepc 701 and i love it!
If you want to buy eeepc, i recommend 900 or higher...
Those models have bigger displays...
(701 has 7" display and 800x600 resolution)

I think My boss has one of those!

It's damn impressive indeed, and a decent price for getting 4Gb of memory (thought I do hope it's a 64-bit OS with that!) and it's a very good screen rez too, can play 720p HD stuff nicely, and with that kinda horsepower it won't lag for even one microsecond!

I dont like, nor recommend Dell due to their knack of exploding

*What type of connectivity do you need D333... wifi, HSDPA?
*Touchscreen?
*Display Rez?
>Then you should think about models with SSDs...if its a decent one, they use less power, which is important even moreso in a notebook.

I love my old but amaziing HP TC100 tablet pc. Keyboard is entirely detachable(I never use it) Handwriting recognition in Vista is without compare. Has wacom digitised touch input, not the rubbish resistive touch you get nowdays. Best thing, they cost a $300ish on ebay or at refurb places.

I have my entire SW(etc) book collection on it now. But mainly use it for basic net/docs. Always seem to get asked by ppl at work to use it to take meeting minutes

but yeah, everyone's needs are different. If you're just saying 'its for surfin only' but the minute you get it you'll try put KOTOR on it, then please just buy a notebook capable of that

I went ahead and bought the LG laptop I posted above. Tablet PC looks good but I decided to go with something more versatile. So far I like it a lot: good equipment, 1280 x 800 px resolution, a bright screen, good keyboard and a very decent gpu.

The only downside is that it has a zebra like paint job with pink stripes

It's 32 bits but it doesn't seem to be of any real consequence here:

^I don't know what all the fuss is about when it comes to 64...I don't see any real advantage over 32 bit at this point...you're more likely to find compatibility w/ 32 bit anyway...

Only worth fussin if you use higher end niche apps that are x64 optimised, if you fold, or run a server scooting around multiple+contiguous instances higher bandwidth content like HD video and record digital and satellite TV

Most gaming, basic apps dont go anywhere near being multicore, let alone x64optimised. As for compatibility, increasingly less of an issue nowdays. Between the great compatibility layer in Vista x64, many apps are happy to be run in either platform.

I personally think that it is remarkably craptastic that more apps and games arent x64 optimised because so many of us now use x64 CPUs... Does anyone into gaming etc even have a x86 CPU nowdays..

hey, that'd be a good idea for a forum wide poll.....*telepaths with tk*
