Lightbulb Revisiting Microtransactions

Whether The Old Republic will be microtransaction-based or not has been a fairly debated topic since the EA CEO’s slip up and the statement being later retracted. Such a big misunderstanding must have something to it, whether SWTOR was originally going to be microtransaction-based and had the idea scrapped later, or will be microtransaction-based [...]

As far as I'm concerned, until EA defines what "microtransactions" really are, then there's not real point to discuss them. Microtransactions could be anything from buying new content to monthly subscription fees. I'd prefer the former, with no monthly subscription, with only an upfront fee for the game itself, and additional optional fees for new content, i.e., new campaigns, though I highly doubt that this will happen.

I see MMOs as being a redundant concept. I don't think it maters what type of paying system is in place. Money is money. They should have a single charge. You pay for the game in full at the checkout counter. No monthly fees. No microtransactions. Period. Each time there are upgrades or new content BioWare should release it on cd. People pay for it at the counter, install it on the good old computer, and then play until they hit bone. No creditcard or debitcard required. One time at the counter fee. Nothing more.

Not a day goes by in WoW when I don't wish that I could skip a great deal of the mindless leveling process, or radically alter my characters, so I wouldn't mind some micro-transactions in that sense, and, if buying gear was allowed, there should of course be no "buyer gear" but only the same stuff available in game.

Honestly, I'd like it to be like guild wars, buy the game, play the game. None of this once a month stuff.

I think most people would prefer this but it is unrealistic to expect there to be no fees, whether they are monthly fees, microtransactions or both.

So far the Visual style seems like a real cop out, but not a "we made it on the cheap so you could play for free" cop out. It's gonna be £9/$14 a month, then you'll pay for expansions, the micro transactions will probably be some money spinner like the resent SWG card game, where you pay r/l money for in game items, slippery slope for us, pocket liner for them.

You'd do the same thing if it was lining your pocket.

^ I'm just commenting on the probable reality of this MMO's payment scheme. I'm fully aware of that people like being paid to do work, as I do, and I'm going to be paying Bioware's wages just like everyone else.

I've had a full time job for 12 years btw, (just in case you thought I was some 16 yr old 'cause there mom wont foot the bill) so I have an Idea how the world works

I like to look at it less of paying for their work, but paying for quality entertainment. You may have to pay for WoW, and while it isn't the greatest game...

Its really, really smooth on every system I've played it on. The community is pretty decently looked after, and its one of the few games in which I've seen a reported game glitched fixed with a few hours.

For like, 1/2 hours of pay a month it certain can give 100 times that back.

Four. I'd love another Guild Wars. Well, with the roleplaying freedom, less linear storyline, and choreographed lightsaber combat that BioWare's planning.

And jumping, a must-have feature in any proper MMO!

Because WoW was designed to run on just about every system, from a low-grade older PC or laptop to a brand new gaming machine that doesn't even sweat to run it. Too many games these days are designed to only function on super-ultra-high-computer killer settings.

Yeah, its a shame. My current computer has officially gone over the hill and cannot play anything released in the last year.

I'd get a new one, but money is an every persistent problem nowadays.

The art style is appealing because it looks to be taking WoW's approach to a flexible, all around engine. And considering I probably wont have a new computer for another year or more, I'll be stuck with this thing while on Swtor.

NO MICROTRANSACTIONS.

EA has a horrible reputation for abusing it, so I'd prefer a flat monthly fee and give everyone the same access to everything. I will not put up with being nickled and dimed like over xbox live.

Think I'm crazy, or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
