Fly, Spacebat, Fly!
I heard about this a few days ago and decided I'd share it here.
Bat Hangs onto Shuttle During Liftoff
On a cool spring eve March 15th, 2009 a bat, crippled and wistful, clung to the Space Shuttle Discovery as it was thrust toward the great beyond. People assumed it would fly away when the engines fired up, but the bat (which was very much alive at the time of take off) stayed clinging on.
Godspeed, Space Bat.

Such courage indeed.
That video was hilarious! I love the way some of the news sources are going with it:
CNN:
The crew of the Discovery safely docked at the International Space Station on Tuesday. It was unclear whether its stowaway was still clinging to the shuttle.

The fuel tank doesn't go up to orbit; it gets jettisoned after being expended. Space-bat couldn't be clinging to the shuttle now, even if he wanted to.

You shatter dreams.
EDIT: Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but my good friend Wikipedia tells me that after they are jettisoned they "re-enter" Earth's atmosphere--meaning at one point they must have left. Definitely makes it sound like they are, at least for a little while, in space.

Sure, they go into space, but just in an arc. They never reach orbit.

One bat, while unsuccessful in his attempt, dared let slip the surly bonds of this world and venture to a realm no other winged mammalian had gone before. This is his story.

It's comfortable knowing that no matter what I do it will never be as awesome as that.

It's comforting to know that a bat is more awesome than you could ever be?

That track, whilst being completely wrong for the opening titles of a sci-fi series, is perfect for that video.
RIP Spacebat.
