Okay... I've slept on this... I really like a lot of what we're getting. I agree with what you guys are saying about the walking animation being off - and it's funny because in the videos where they switch between new and old, they got it right in the original game!

But overall I really like the art style they went for. Except for Guybrush.

Elaine, LeChuck, Bob... everyone else is great.

But...

Are they serious?

EDIT:

Okay guys, I know this is bad. But I find it easier to communicate in visuals than words. I am no Photoshop expert, but I had a crack at reforming Guybrush using the liquify tool into something more like what I was thinking.

Again, I know this is bad. I don't want him to look like this. But I do think he should look MORE like this than he currently does. I think they need to round and soften his features, so he gets back some of the wide-eyed wonder that is Guybrush.

At the moment, he looks like slick and confident... which is definitely not Guybrush in SOMI. And he just doesn't look very appealing.

Lol. Did you deliberately make his facial expressions "miserable"?

I think the hair is one of the main problems for me.
And if you look at him from the side, he has this really strange neck to chin thing going on.
That kinda gives me the creeps.

I don't think so. It's definitely him in the SE but there's no mention of him on the Telltale site. LeChuck doesn't have that many lines in SOMI and they could probably get them done in one or two recording sessions but a whole season would require loads of sessions. As a fairly well known and in demand actor they probably can't afford his fee for that much work.

That said, the voice in the Telltale games is a decent approximation.

You mean the way the sea stays steady as a rock and the buildings keep washing up and down? Yes I thought that was odd.

I'm still hoping it's a placeholder.
While I think I can live with the new voice, I think Earl Boen had it nailed.

I think this one doesn't sound half as menacing as Boen, and he's too raspy.
And from the trailer it sounds as he delivers his jokes too much. Geekwood!

Oh, and am I right in hearing Rob Paulsen as the voice of Bob in the SOMI:SE movie? I think he's a great voice actor!

The last word in #monkey-island from a Telltale representative I'll decline to name () is that Telltale is in talks with Earl, but nothing is confirmed. It is truly a case of waiting and hearing.

Oh, I certainly hope it wíll be him in the final version!
It'll just make things complete!

Plus, although I love Telltale and all their efforts, their casting has never been close to Lucasarts'.
I'd hate to have all these great voices back, and then listen to a second hand LeChuck.

Now its my turn. MI: SE has one big disadvantage. The exclusivity of the FM-Towns version is now broken! And I love this hightech version!!

Btw here an interview of the new president:

Will we see more of those old adventure properties resurface?
Monkey Island is one of a few going on right now. The classic game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is included in the new Wii version of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, which comes out on June 9th.
Were looking at other opportunities to bring back the best of our heritage products to consumers. LucasArts has a rich history of storytelling and innovation and Im excited to bring back Monkey Island and begin sharing it once again with todays audience.

I don't like Guybrush's hair at all, but I don't think his face is that bad actually.

I'm sure I'll get used to his new look (hair and all!) pretty quickly after playing it for a while.

I was thinking about this today...

We must really piss Lucasarts off for them to re-release a game...

I just watched on GameSpot that the Special Edition will have the Curse of Monkey Island voice actress for Elaine.

Okay, I had another crack at Guybrush's head, this time using that Steve Purcell concept art.

I would much prefer something like this.

They're using the entire original cast from Curse of Monkey Island, so yes, she is.

@Megakles: Still looks too confident, IMO. The original game's Guybrush was supposed to look like an ordinary 16 year old kid who washed up on a shore one day and decided he wants to be a pirate. He isn't smooth, he isn't cool, and he looks like a flooring inspector.

You're right, and a lot of it is in his posture too. They've given him such a hero posture, standing up straight with his shoulders back...

In the original game, it looks more like he's slouching a bit, or at the very least relaxed. He's more Woody than Buzz Lightyear, Lucas Arts.

I think it's a good point to understand exactly WHY we liked Guybrush in the first place... I'm not sure the sprite designer did?

Hey.

@Thunderpeel, I completely agree with your first post. It must be possible to get back some of that easy-going-ness, even when adapting the art style, or remaking in 3D (I can't tell from that picture whether it's 3D or not).

Talking with LucasArts about it, might best be done on their forums maybe...
http://forums.lucasarts.com/forum.jspa?forumID=133

Apart from the graphics though, very impressed with the way they've apparently extended the original game/engine, rather than reimplementing everything from scratch, which is what I assumed at first.

Apart from the face/hair, I think the idea's great. Not sure the scenes sound very good acted out with voices though... And the narration sounds a bit too Space-Questy to me. But I don't think those quibbles aren't enough to put me off.
Ultimately, it would be great to see more adventure game love from LucasArts. If I had an XBox or capable PC, I'd happily buy it to show my support, the same way I did for Telltale with the Bone games.

Seems the voices are gone when you switch to the old art.
Huge let down for me as I was planning on playing with the old art.
I don´t really like the balding huge neck new Guybrush.
The animations also works better in the old art from what I´ve seen of them.

I wouldn't bet on them changing Guybrush's design unfortunately.
The game is apparently finished already. According to Lucasarts when they were on gamespot's show at E3.

Well all I'm saying is...if it's such a big deal don't buy it...but I really don't think that it's such a big deal that will take away from the experience as a whole.

What was so exclusive about the FM-Towns version again? AfaIk, it is very similar to the DOS enhanced CD on which the SE is obviously based on. The only exclusive feature I can think of is the Japanese text, unless they are going to add this to the SE as well.

Very weak indeed. It can't be hard for them to implement independent settings for music, voice and graphics. They still could even implement such a button for switching all together along with the regular setup. Let's hope that this limitation is not part of the script, then there is a chance that ScummVM can have this ability.
I really wish, they would have done the voice acting and live music before they dumped all their talented people. Now they give us completely unnecessary compromises.

Actually the old music is what's used in the "classic mode." Both the new music recordings and the voice acting are only available when you play with the enhanced graphics.

To quote myself from LucasArts:

Quote:
I think a fantastic job has been done of the new art style, and to be honest I think Guybrush's hair looks fine.

However, for some reason his in-game hair doesn't quite look right when compared to the close-ups and cover art. I think it's a lighting issue, because although he's clearly not meant to be bald on the sides he does actually look bald on the side in-game.

I think this is what bothers people the most, and I've even heard people comparing the look to the Hitler Youth! I think if the lighting were tweaked so it looks more like a smooth continuation of hair rather than side baldness — probably achieved by dampening the excessive dark shadows on the underside of his hair — it'd look absolutely fine.

Still, if the game is officially signed off I guess feedback like this is of no use.

In fact, here's a rushed approximation of the kind of thing I was describing above as I suspect I might not have been entirely clear:
