Awesome, this means more people will get into Adventure games and there will be a bigger market and therefore more games. That dry spell was just an adventurey hiatus after all! This is great news

I don't doubt that a lot of unfamiliar people will get these, especially if they're cheap. Build it and they will come.

Good news!

I replied to LA's twitter with this message:
"@lucasartsgames Will the prices be equal all over the world? I don't want to see any $1 = 1€ bull**** from you."

And I got this response:
"lucasartsgames: messaging to avoid swearing on our main Twitter feed. To my knowledge, you won't see such BS from us "

Looks like wee will get fair prices in EU

I was thinking this as well, as well as perhaps Day of the Tentacle.

I'm pretty happy with the announcement, and it's pretty much what I expected. I will definitely get a few of those games; not played Loom or The Dig actually. And I love Steam so I was glad this was the platform they chose to release on. Looking forward to see what others they will release in the future.

Yep, that was my first thought too... but on second thought, they might hold MI2 back until after SOMI:SE is released... otherwise people might get confused as to why there's MI2 available, while MI1 isn't.

Still, I'll keep my hopes up to see an MI2:SE eventually.

Then again, the list is also missing more than half of the Scumm games.

This is pretty boring news. It's sort of a buzz kill, because with the hype I was hoping for another special edition announcement, but eh, I guess those new to the games and also have Steam will be happy.

I really have no idea why companies who aren't dead in the water didn't get on this rerelease stuff through digital distribution channels a lot sooner. I mean you can actively fight piracy of your games and profit from work decades ago at the same time with little effort.

This is certainly a lot better than the 15th or so rerelease of the first 3 Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Its not disappointing news in itself but the build up and acting like it was the greatest news ever made it seem pretty boring

I don't why there are a few people here who are less enthused and are having a "Big Whoop, it doesn’t benefit me or affect me" attitude. This is both HUGE and GREAT news. LucasArts are re-releasing their old catalogue for newer systems which will hopefully get a new generation of gamers who don't have ScummVm or didn't grow up with it like we did. This is something I've personally been waiting for years.

Did anyone truly think this was going to be a new adventure game or SE this soon? They have to test the waters and we have to be patient and buy the SE buy the re-released games. I have a feeling more will come whether it be more SE's, more adventure games. But we have to be patient

I just hope this leads to more games being re-released. I'm a huge LucasArts fanboy but I always loved Return To Zork, Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within and Return of the Phantom and playing them again without DosBox would be fantastic for myself and others.

This is great news we should celebrate.

The FM Towns version of Zak McKracken should be commited to Steam at all costs, it really is the definitive version.

Well, I did explain why in my earlier grumpy™ post. That is your why.

Yes, why not? Nintendo has been in the business of rereleasing everything they have ever made with minuscule to no updates for years. With ScummVM being one of the most easy to use emulators to play old LucasArts games and other assorted adventures ever, it's just not as exciting, except that now it's official.

Well Sierra died and LucasArts just got mismanaged. The question is, why hasn't this stuff already been kept and print and available for years like it has in Europe? I mean I know why, but in my opinion it's just something LucasArts should have already been doing in the first place.

So yeah, good news, but not something I would celebrate on.

It would be hilarious if they did that and in the process accidentally committed the version with the anime eyes.

That would be great, they should provide a switch to go between the sixteen different versions and make the casual gamers how insanely dedicated and... insane... Lucasarts adventure fans are.

It also provides Lucasarts and Steam a chance to create the definitive Last Crusade, the VGA version has EGA elements and the FM Towns version has unique VGA elements, it's all a strange brew but with a little hunting, they can piece together the full VGA version.

Irishmile, I doubt MI2 wasn't included because they were waiting to release it in SE format. In fact, the smart thing to do would be to release it now so that people would think "wow, this game is awesome" and then when they announce the SE of it, people who played it on Steam will be like "oh cool, I love that game!".

I reckon they'll probably make it available shortly after MI:SE is out (for continuity's sake).

But it would be a bit of a slap to the face for those who buy LeChuck's Revenge now and then find out the special edition is a few weeks away with the option to switch between original VGA and scurvy inducing high definition.

Well, if they offered maybe a discount voucher towards a Special Edition of LeChuck's Revenge to those who bought the classic game beforehand on Steam if a SE is released then that would be nice of them.

It would be good to have MI2 available legally either way for those who haven't played it.

It's a good idea but I imagine their plans for future special editions are already underway, all it takes is some respectable sales figures for Monkey Island and they'll be jumping to annouce the next game to receive the '2009' treatment.

I'd imagine they'll do Maniac Mansion next, then LeChuck's, then Zak, then Tentacle to ensure releases are staggered and receive maximum attention.

"... but the Steam version of The Last Crusade isn't the CD-ROM version that was released in 1992! LucasArts tells us that the version of The Last Crusade that will be put on Steam is a "previously unreleased version" with "even more bugfixes" than the original CD-ROM re-release, along with a "Tandy 1000 sound engine." As for LOOM and Atlantis, you'll be seeing the CD-ROM "talkie" versions for both on Steam."

What bugfixes. And more sound or music than FM-Towns? Oh and why the talkie from Indy 4 not with wav music like the other FM-Towns versions?

And I only would see a crossover Loom! The FM-Towns AND Talkie. With all close-ups, all sounds and music AND voice!!

Tandy 1000 sound engine??

This is why we should be working on the updates...

Sure it will take six years to complete each version and we'll still bitch and moan afterwards, but they will be TRULY definitive.

I don't think it would be possible to make a combined CD and FM-Towns version of Loom now. You would have gaps for all of the unrecorded dialogue if you were more true to the FM-Towns than the PC version.

It's probably rather safe to say the games on the list for steam will not get special editions, would be odd to have to buy two versions soon after each other.

Oh yes. How silly of me!
But on the other hand the voices from MI 1:SE are brand new, too!

The SE wouldn't be a few weeks away, it'd be a year or more away. It takes more than a few weeks to produce a game!

Yeah, if they can get the original cast back, that would be better. But I also wouldn't be against rerecording everything with new actors (or the old ones) since it might just be easier that way and to just have the FMTowns looping soongs and cutscene music on a separate track.

Broken Sword was rereleased with the old dialogue and newly recorded dialogue in addition to it on the Wii, but I hear they didn't master it correctly, so it becomes painfully obvious which is the old dialogue. I would imagine it's hard to match though, even though I think Revolution is a studio comprised of a bunch of incompetents.

Either way, those great portraits should be brought back! I think it's ridiculous they were left out of the CD version in the first place!

I think it's time for an enterprising member of the board to email the Lucasarts team with a few handy pointers to ensure the games are pretty feature complete...

The following website is the holy grail and is an excellent start to work from.

The good thing about steam, is that already released games can be easily updated automatically, so if they miss a few close up or whatever, they could in theory add them later on.

Eh, I doubt they care, but yeah, if there were someone working there who could guide them that would be nice. They should just hire ATMMachine on for a while as a consultant.

Good job those games don't need special editions, they're both already talkies (unless they decide to release an old version of Loom for some reason...) Personally I think the only games that need special editions now are:

Maniac Mansion
Zak McKracken
Monkey Island 2

Probably The Last Crusade as well but I can't really see them doing that... nor do I really care for it tbh XD

Old school games that will work on my current PC...I'm definitely game!

Lucasarts has proven itself smart in the past couple months.

Maniac would be an excellent and really off-beat remake, utilising surreal graphics and great voice talent.

The smaller size of the game itself means a quick development time.

Loom and The Dig are both great games. I finished both a few years ago in my quest to finish every LucasArts point & clicker, and really enjoyed them.

This will be the only one I'm going to buy.

EDIT: Of course, the article is wrong as there was no CD DOS release of the game in 1992.

Hmm... it would seem that they have done something to make the resoultion quite flexible

lucasartsgames tweets: Nifty new feature for the adventure games: What resolution will they run in? How about whatever resolution you're running. That work?

sounds pretty cool to me

Well, I think this is cool as.
Finally I will be able to legally get my hands on Loom, Fate Of Atlantis & The Last Crusade without paying overinflated prices off eBay.
Also, whats the deal with DRM on Stream? I know it has it, but do you get an installer that you can burn onto a CD?

so what do we guess the prices will be? $5.99 per adventure? or will they push it towards $9.99?
