Help Prime out! XBox or PC versions?

So I got a sweet setup with a new TV and XBox for Christmas, but I'm also planning on getting a nice PC over the next little while. My question is for the following games is the XBox version just as a good or better than the PC version?

Force Unleashed
Mass Effect
Modern Warefare 2
NBA 2k9

I'll probably think of more later. Also, any decent to good samurai based games out there for the 360? Thanks for helping to make Prime's Holiday season even better!

STAY AWAY FROM THE PC VERSION.

I cannot stress this enough. This version was a port made by a separate company, and one of the worse ports I've had the misfortune of trying. There are next to no graphics options, and it actually ends up looking worse on the PC than the 360. The mouse gives better control, but it is all around more stable, reliable, etc on the 360.

Modern Warefare 2
Since there are no dedicated servers available on the PC, the two essentially amount to the same thing. It really just depends on what controls and graphics level you want, and in that I'd say the PC version would be superior. PC communities tend to be better than the Xbox Live as well.

Its a stretch, but Afro Samurai is a great game staring a samurai. Its fighting system is a ton of fun, and has sort of a retro steam punk Japan you run through with some nice music.

The biggest difference I guess would be availability of 3rd party mods for games. If you care about mods (or modding yourself) then the PC version would be the better option.

(This is the main reason I tend to stick to PC gaming. I like to tinker and tweak too much with the games I play, so half the fun is lost if I am unable to do that. )

Pains me to say it.. but the more I use my Xbox.. the more I'm liking it more than the pc. Gawdz, yeah.. Hell just froze over

For the games you mentioned Prime.. Xbox is the path to go.. excluding MW (I don't have the game, so no opinion). True_Avery is spot on about the Mass Effect port too.

Shame too, but so far in all the games I have for both PC & Xbox, I really like the Xbox route (gawdz I think I'm going to cry.. hehe). Oblivion & Fallout 3 (non-modded), Force Unleashed (though I hate the controls), Mass Effect & Dead Space are a few examples.

Nowadays, I only get the games for PC if I want to mod them.. or there are no other options (mmo games). Of course, my back problems probably have alot to do with that as well.. so take my post with a grain of salt It's much easier to game away from the computer desk for me... and requires less pain meds

I play on a 46" Samsung HDTV and it's epic.. you'll absolutely love the gaming on such a large screen

i actually have the Mass Effect PC game, and i've never had a problem with it. to be honest, i prefer the PC version for a couple of reasons. they changed the hacking mini-game around so that its not just pressing buttons when your prompted (this time, it actually takes a bit of skill and thinking). they also improved the graphics a bit (especially higher-res textures), but the biggest difference came with the texture pop-in (a common problem for Unreal 3-based games) since that's been significantly reduced in the PC version. they also improved the inventory system a bit to make it not so cluttered feeling (although its still not a very good inventory system).

of course, the biggest advantage is the mouse and keyboard controls which are fantastic. the game is much more shooter-esque on the PC version for this reason alone which is something i highly prefer.

as for technical issues, it probably going to depend on what kind of hardware your running in your system. i've had the game running on 3 separate PC's with no problems outside of a couple of graphical hitches here and there (lava that disappears but is still "there" for you to drive your Mako into). all 3 computers had a variety of hardware (and operating systems, too), so i can post specs if you need it.

oh, and as for the rest of the games on that list, just get the 360 versions. and yes, i'm saying that about Modern Warfare 2 as well. the PC version has a pretty stripped down multiplayer compared to most PC titles, so you'd be just as well off with the 360 version.

PC, even if there aren't any huge differences, the mouse&keyboard combo is a lot more accurate than a controller.

If it's a port of a console game, then it's most likely going to run better on a console, mainly due to the usual shoddiness of the development process. That said, there are many exceptions, particularity if the PC version is highly modifiable (UE3 games, Source Engine games, etc.), or larger online support.

You also have to take into account the genre of the game in-question; shooters are always better with a mouse and keyboard compared to the clumsy, unintuitive design of a dual-analog controller. The same can usually be said for RTS-based games, though I can think of a few exceptions. Most RPGs of today are essentially ARPG-based shooters, so they could work on either platform, not considering modding. Platformers are probably the only games that feel somewhat awkward on a PC, but almost anything else is enhanced by the mouse/keyboard setup.

The largest factor is hindsight: Will I be playing this game five, ten, or even fifteen years from now? If so, then I would stick with a dedicated PC. Any PC game can be played on a operating system that supersedes its original make. Most computer games will run on higher-generation OSs out-of-the-box, and if they don't, then there are third-party compatibility patches and even game engine recreations to bridge compatibility and even enhance the original experience. With consoles, you're subject to major architectural changes by every generation, which in turn can deter or even outright eliminate backward-compatibility. Those consoles that do provide backward-compatibility are usually plagued by emulation anomalies, or they might even make you buy a machine-ready port of a game that you already own.

Get MW2 for PC and find someone near you who has it for xbox or ps3, thus obtaining the advantages of being able to play it with better controls and being able to play split screen.

Thanks for the insights. Yeah, I'd go straight PC for moddability, but it sounds like games like Mass Effect aren't all that moddable anyway. Is this correct? Mass Effect is probably the only one I could say playing years and years from now. I tend to like RPGs on the PC generally. FPSs I can go either way.

Who are you and what have you done with the real ChAiNz.2da? Saying you like the Xbox versions of Oblivion and Fallout 3 is paramount to treason in a modding community.

I finally broke down and bought the PC version of Mass Effect and while stingerhs makes some excellent points, I guess playing the game countless times on the 360 ruined the PC version of the game. I miss the controller when trying to play it on the PC.

heh, I know.. but that's just the tick.. "non-modded" Helps keep me "honest" without modding myself a couple million gold/caps and a kill-all-in-one-shot sword/rifle

Now, if we're talking modded versions.. then yeah, pc rules, but just for the sit down, relax.. remove a few heads to de-stress gaming session, nothing beats my couch and an Abita Turbo-Dog

Same for me on Mass Effect.. the console version pretty much ruined the pc version for me. Even with the changes, I like the xbox version better than pc (imo of course) that and Force Unleashed controls suck no matter if it's pc or xbox, so I vote for xbox for the comfort and convenience (and the huge-gantic screen)

I just Bought 2K10 on PC, when I usually buy them for Xbox360... Seems much Cleaner Graphically and isn't to much trouble to setup for a Joy-pad, Cheaper too if you download from Steam.

Yeah, I got 2k9 simply because it was $19.99. I tend to get sports games out the year after release for that reason. I find there is usually just evolutionary changes and not revolutionary changes in those kind of games.

Same here. Plus I have yet to master laying flat on my back on the couch and while playing a PC game. However, I am a master of just that on the 360.

In defense of the almighty PC, I have never fallen asleep while playing a game on a PC.

I'm with stingerhs, I have the PC version of Mass Effect and have never had any problems with it. I've tried the 360 version of the game as well and I can safely say I much prefer the PC version. If you have a rig that can handle it, it will look and play way better on a PC.

You folks are aware that you can hook a PC up to an HDTV and use a cordless keyboard and mouse, right?

Just thought that I'd throw that out there.

I am, you did notice my use of the word "flat" didn't you? Now if you can design a system to make that possible, then I am game. Perhaps something wired directly into my brain so I do not even have to lift my arms.

lolwut, and btw, there is no hyphen in Xbox.

Oh and Prime, I'm biased because I don't have a Xbox, but I'd get ME and MW2 for PC, reason being mods, controls, and community, I find the PC communities to be more... civil, than console communities. The Force Unleashed and NBA2k9 I would get for Xbox, mostly for the controls, though I suppose it wouldn't be hard to use a Xbox controller with your PC. I find action and sports games to be easier to control on a console setup though. Oh another thing to consider as far as ME goes, is if your computer will be able to play ME2, because ME2 is capable of retrieving data from your ME1 save file, and I'd doubt that they'd be cross-platform compatible.

You should get Madden 2010 for PC if you like sports games. I love making my own teams but the artwork that comes with the game is antiquated and not all that great, but with the PC and photoshop, any team I want to make is doable.

I don't really think there ARE any. I THINK a save game editor like KSE was in production, but I'm not sure.

Haven't checked recently, but last I did it was mostly reskins and texture replacements and INI file hacks. Apparently Unreal 3 games are rather tricky to mod if the editor isn't released.

Epic Games already released the entire UDK for non-commercial purposes, so theoretically one could edit Mass Effect through that manner, although I haven't checked personally...

Mass Effects probably has less than 100 legitimate mods, and most of them are just custom skins. The games engine is very unfriendly towards modding unless a full SDK is released or bought from Epic.

I opened up Mass Effect again and got the latest patch and they have indeed fixed a great deal wrong. The graphics, at least, look a lot better than they used to with the inclusion of some new filtering options and they finally, FINALLY fixed the shadows that were really, really buggy in the initial release.

So, upon this new patch I'd say pick up Mass Effect for the PC over the 360. It took awhile, but it finally looks and feels better than the 360 version and I never thought I'd say that. The game, being an unreal engine game, still has no AA options so it is a very choppy game on both systems but that can be sort of fixed with motion blur.

My opinion of XBOX lately is that it's a piece of $%#^. Has a higher failure rate than other consoles. I'd much prefer playing 8-bit classics on a refurbished NES
(which I can help you out with BTW--it's pretty easy actually) than on a 360.

PC versions can be modded, plus your machine is only as reliable as you want it to be.
Though I hear there are little negligable stuff on XBOX releases that get cut from PC so it's a bit of mix and match.

I might go with a console platform if I didn't care to futz with anything, though. Certainly having a controller in your hands is a nice feel and this comes standard with a console whereas you need to buy (or make) your own stuff for PC.

BTW Isn't there an Afro Samurai game out there somewhere? Sam L. Jackson is the bomb.

In the case of XBOX, I have to agree with mur'phon about responsivity of controls. Ironic, though, how laggy some computers are in their processors and memory--but that's an issue for another thread.

Do what you think is right.

Well, I ended up getting ME for the XBox. Lack of mods, my new huge TV, and the 19.99 price tag made it the starting point for me. I figure getting it for PC later if I really want to won't be much of an investment.

Probably a good idea. The DLC is cheap, and I'm guessing the cross save-game system will work better on the 360 anyway. 8 hours into the PC version and I am still noticing a pretty inexcusable amount of glitches.

I didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if someone already said this, but for Mass Effect, get it for whichever platform you want to play ME2 on because of the ability to bring over your save game. I know that sounds silly but I imagine that the PC version's quality will be up to par since I believe BioWare is handling it themselves and it's being released as the same time as the 360 version. I definitely prefer keyboard and mouse for that game and didn't have a lot of problems aside from the odd crash (which seems to happen on a lot of PC games for my computer), graphics options etc seemed fine.

That's kind of what I'm aiming for but we'll see how long that takes.
