Mass Effect playing styles

Giving the first game another runthrough before getting ME2 and was wondering which armors and weapons people liked the best in that game. Also, which armors work best in the hazard areas (heat/cold/pressure/etc.)? Which, if any of them, allow you operate outside of the Mako w/o dying in fairly short order?

For ME1, there really isn't much choice for armor or weapons. The Colossus armor and the Master Spectre gear were far and away the best, and if you played either a Soldier or an Infiltrator, you were invincible, courtesy of Immunity. Only the Devlon series of armors let you operate in Level 1 hazard areas without issue, but they are very inferior to the Colossus, not worth it IMO. No armor lets you operate in Level 2 hazard areas forever, but then again, only two planets had that.

I'm playing through ME for the first time, and all the armours apart from the default N7 medium armour just look ugly, at least so far.

Same here.. but they tend to get 'somewhat' better. Landed some medium Mercenary VII armor yesterday and it's pretty stylish.

Blood red, and more of a banded piecemail than the other plastic-addon armors thus far

Just realized also that VII and higher gives more upgrade slots (armor & weaponry).. so that was a nice surprise. Albeit now I'm starting to feel like a 'super' character. Besides biotic attacks (I hate stasis) I pretty much brush off any type of physical/toxic/balistics damage. And this is just at Lvl 36+

Yeah, I just acquired Mercenary IV armour. I'm actually using it because I can actually tolerate the look. Can you get upgraded versions of the N7 Onyx armour?

Off-Topic: Do romances in ME1 affect ME2? Right now I think Ashley is trying to get into my pants, but I want to know if there are hotter chicks in ME2 to hold out for.

You can have both if you don't mind cheating on your ME1 love interest. There is even “sort of" one that does not count as cheating. The real question is if cheating on ME1 love interest in ME2 will really affect M3.

Personally, I would play ME1 without any real concern on how it will affect ME2 and/or ME3. More fun that way.

FWIW the love scenes in ME1 are done better in ME1 than ME2. Although the scenes in ME2 offers way more variety.

I honestly went through the entire game with default armor, and I kicked ass. It doesn't offer much protection but Shep is a bad ass so why use godly armor?

With class-related perks, high-level upgrades, and a modicum of common sense (i.e. using cover well), you really don't need anything other than Onyx armor (though I'll take X over I and not feel guilty about it).

I thought that Onyx armor was the only one that looked good at all, and yes I am materialistic and I want my character too look bad ass, if he is going to be performing bad ass moves.

Is your avatar an inkling?
spoiler:
Because I desperately wanted to romance Tali in ME but found out she was not an option.

If you're toying with my heart strings, a kick to your jollies is coming

NO SPOILERS PLEASE! just a nod yes/no will suffice. I'll have trouble enough suppressing the 'Search YouTube' urge.. hehehe

I have ME2 waiting, however I'm currently playing my ME1 Shepard 'import' for it. A possible Tali romance may just make me question my current romance path...

Yes

But I still wouldn't let that knowledge change the way you play ME1. This is one time you can have your cake and eat it too.

OK, next question: Shock Trooper or Commando for my soldier?? I'm leaning towards shock trooper right now...

The Commando specialty gets bonuses to overall damage as well as a cool-down reduction to the pistol Marksman skill, and the sniper rifle Assassination skill. The Shock Trooper on the other hand, gets a cool-down reduction for the Adrenaline Rush skill (which instantly "refreshes" the other skills) and a bonus to overall health. Both Specialties get a cool-down reduction to the Immunity skill, the one that lets you soak up more damage.

So the question is, do you really use pistols and sniper rifles that much? As a Soldier you shouldn't really be using the pistol at all when you can just use the assault rifle. While the sniper rifle itself is a pretty niche weapon where the cool-down reduction for the Assassination skill really wouldn't come into play that often. So the only other differentiating factor would be the bonus to damage vs. bonus to health. As a soldier you're really supposed to be kind of a meat shield for your squad mates but it does sort of depend on who you bring with you when it comes to whether or not you need that extra damage output yourself. Honestly it doesn't make that significant a difference.

So if you were to ask me, I'd say Shock trooper is the clear winner. The bonus to health isn't really that great, but the cool-down reduction to Adrenaline Rush lets you refresh all your skills more often, including your assault rifle skill which you would probably be using more than your pistol and sniper skills.

I went Shock Trooper for my Soldier as well.

Since I already have an Infiltrator/Operative career to import, I was pretty bored just using pistols... Soldiers (Shock Trooper) is nothing short of a gatling gun with a chip on it's shoulder.

I'm on my first play through and playing an infiltrator and loving it. I currently have colossus armor and as has been mentioned I'm damn near invincible. I keep Ashley and Liara with me typically and we blow through enemies like a hot knife through butter

I ask stoffe whatever she uses and go with that, since she and I have similar play styles (do all the side quests, hate dying with a passion, see as many of the different aspects of the game as possible). Of course, this usually means modding the heck out of the game, but hey, it's fun.

Sweet. You got to the good point (one of many that is). hehehe

Got to say, when the game forced my hand, it left me sitting there for a few minutes just having to deal with the decision.
Kept waiting for the (non-existent) "surprise! we're not "really" going to make you make that kind of decision"...

Yeah, I killed him at least once for being so presumptuous. But I generally let him live b/c he's normally a badass and had useful skills.

FINISHED!

Wow, what a great ride. Saved the galaxy and got laid. That's how I roll.

Truly a fun game, and now one of my faves. There were some really cool moments, like fighting down the outside of the Citadel and blasting Geth and having them float by. Eat it suckas!

During the last few stages the story really shines and asks you to make some hard choices that have real consequences, and it wasn't always obvious what the outcome would be. Most of the characters were interesting and reasonably diverse. I didn't get as annoyed with some of them as it seems others did. Their skills were diverse enough that I ended using all the characters to a reasonable degree. Especially Tali. That's right, ChAiNz. I've been hanging out with your girlfriend. I really liked the peripheral characters like Joker and the doctor that filled out the Normandy crew.

But I think the game does suffer from the KOTOR/TSL problem of having the NPCs not really worth talking to after you complete their quest. That bugged me, especially in TSL, where you train them to be Jedi and then there are no conversations after that. In ME, I would have liked at least a new relevant comment after each main mission. Like "hey, sorry so-and-so got nuked." And please, lets get rid of the fake dialog options.

The side quest missions and locations also got pretty repetitive after a while. I didn't mind driving around in the Mako so much (loved the rail gun with super zoom!), but you were always going to the same kinds of locations with the same kinds of tasks. I guess this is what an MMO is like? I'd have gladly given up some of those for another full fledged main plot planet. Plus I didn't really get the point of all those medallion gathering kinds of quests...

But those are just nitpicks. They did a great job building a new universe to play in, and the codex was excellent at filling me in on how it works as I went along. I'm really looking forward to trying ME2 soon to continue the story of my Shepard!

Oh, and does anyone know where to get high end Onyx armour on a second playthrough? I love the look of that thing. Most of the other ones are just awful.

Maybe I missed the merchant that might have sold it, but you are probably just as likely to get it from random loot as anything (otherwise "cheat it in"). Almost done w/the second one and it's better than the first for the most part. I think most of us were happy they dropped the busy work w/the MAKO, though probing planets got tedious in its own right.

I loved that too. There is something very mecha-anime about their design too I have to admit, having played ME2 - whilst its ending is equally as epic, parts of it feel restricted because of elements in the game forcing you and your crew to stay together in tight spots. It may have been a novelty thing but that citadel level is ME1 is just a jaw dropping moment in video gaming history IMO.

You're gonna love it Primeski. So much depth in the story and your team compared to ME1. You really get a sense of how your decisions are going to reverberate through not only ME2 but the sequel. Once you get used to the little changes in the inventory etc, its very much "same but better-er"

Unless you're the finicky type, I'd ignore all the guides for a perfect outcome and just let it roll, using your gut to make it *your* story. The one bit of advice that is worth heeding for all is to get all your upgrades, especially for your ship. I also think the collector beam weapon doesn't get enough glory - its like having a death star superlaser in your hand.. almost

Happy Hunting

Personally i prefered Onyx or Gladiator armors myself. The Survivor armors looked ugly to me so i sold them as soon as i could.

I haven't played ME2 yet, but one thing that would've been cool would've been to find Kaidan as a Geth PoW.

Weren't the weapons changed slightly from ME1 to ME2?

Ammo clips, now. No overheat, but you can run out of ammo if you "pray and spray" too frequently.

I thought so from the screenies and trailers i've seen.

Is it possible to import the inventory along with my PC?

Each class (including your crew) has a predetermined weapons loadout. You can switch back and forth as new weapons in that class become available.

How do you earn money in ME2 then if you can't collect gear to sell?

It comes in the form of rewards or lying about (though sometimes you've got to "work" for it via mini-games).
