Well I like anime Aash Li... and so do thers around here... check out this thread by jedigoku.
Let's see... ( Here's a short list I now keep around)
I like Masamune Shirow's works...
> Dominion: Tank Police ( Gotta love the Puma sisters)
> Ghost In The Shell
> Appleseed
> Black Magic M-66
The others I like;
> Record of Lodoss Wars ( Awesome AD&D Style Fantasy Anime)
> Bubblegum Crisis Series ( Gotta Love Women In Power Armor)
> All The Macross/RoboTech Series and Movies ( And the Original Unaltered Works that made up RoboTech like Genesis Climber Mospeda)
> Mobile Suit Gundam ( Up to and including the F-91 and 0083 Series, I have not seen the G. Seed and G. Wing Series yet...)
> City Hunter ( Older Series very cool, very funny series.)
> Cowboy Bebop ( I love Spike's Fighter... and then there is Fey Valantine)
> MADDOX-01 ( A practical and sweet-looking Power Armor that runs on Diesel fuel... good story too.)
> The Guyver ( I love the whole Bio-Armour theme)
> Trigun ( $$60,000,000,000 Please!)
> Armor Hunter Mellowlink ( Older Post Apocalyptic Setting Series)
> The Dirty Pair ( Kei and Yuri, wear very little, blow up planets, nuff said!)
> Ninja Scroll
> Akira ( How could I forget that one... I didn't like it at first but it grew on me.)
> SolBianca
> Patlabor ( Like Hill Street Blues with giant robots.)

Record of Lodoss Wars
Bubblegum Crisis Series
The Macross/RoboTech Series
Yeah saw all those except Lodoss War

Got tired of them afterwhile. You can only do so much mecha before it gets old.
City Hunter
Havent heard of it... (and no Im not young, I used to watch Star Blazers on network tv)
Cowboy Bebop
Faye... nuff said. <3
MADDOX-01
Heard of it, havent seen it.
The Guyver
hahahahahaha
Trigun
Love trigun. It would be 100 times better if it got rid of the angst and drama. I love that cat in the show that appears everywhere.
Armor Hunter Mellowlink
Sounds sorta familiar.
The Dirty Pair
Is that like Dirty Pair Flash?
Ninja Scroll
Never saw it, but I know of it.
Akira
ugh.
SolBianca
Love this anime!
Patlabor

Aash Li, All the Shirow anime I would recommend, both the old and newer remakes are pretty good. Dominion is a classic.
If you like fantasy stories like LOTR, and get a chance to see it, Record of the Lodoss Wars is really, really good...

That is why I stopped watching the newer series myself after a certain point, but the old ones still have a place in my LD and DVD collections.

Sort of, the older series is what I was referring to. I have not seen Dirty Pair Flash yet, but I believe it is the same series, story wise, just modernized a little.
City Hunter... what can I say the hero is James Bond one minute, and if a pretty girl walks into his line of sight he becomes anything but suave and debonair... some really humorous scenes abound in this series. Some of the Laws of Anime are readily apparent in this series.
Maddox-01 is a movie about a normal guy who gets possession of a prototype diesel powered suit of power armor, and then chaos ensues.
Patlabor, well like I said it is Hill Street Blues with the police in giant robots. A little more cerebral than most, which adds to it's novelty to me.

I am of the school of thought that unless it is animated, it isn't anime...
If you made 24 frames of fanart and turned it into a 1 second movie clip then your fanart could be considered anime.
Most fanart fits more into the Manga catagory... but that is just me most likely.
EDIT: @ Cyborgninja what is Naruto like?
EDIT 2: Put in a missing word... response to Aash Li's post below!

Well yeah, I was referring to fanart of anime, but fanart couldnt be manga either with that definition since its only one panel and theres no text... usually.

Space Adventure Cobra (simply the best)

Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex
Haibane Renmei
Berserk
Record of Lodoss War (the one in 13 parts NOT the one in 26)
Cowboy Bebop
Original Dirty Pair (NOT Dirty Pair Flash)
Last Exile (very nice steampunk atmosphere)
Movies:
Vampire Hunter D
Blood: The Last Vampire
Wicked City
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the Shell (both the original and #2 - Innocence)
Appleseed (both, but the new one which is cgi and looks "cartooned" has a deeper story)
Spirited Away
Spriggan
Has anyone seen Elfen Lied? I have heard it should be really good.

For simply *the* wierdest hentai movies ever, I would reccomend:
Yurotsukodoji - I saw this once because my cousin rented it. I liked it because Im a fan of utterly bizzare scifi. hehe And Im probly spelling it wrong, because I can never remember the spelling...
and I think Demon City Shinjuko is another anime thats just really wierd and hentai, but Im not sure.
Yes! Someone else has seen Haibane Renmai! I absolutely loved that series! The last half of that series I cried through nearly every episode.Very angsty but also bittersweet.
Oh, and before anyone goes and gets Loveless, I warn you its Yaoi, though there is no sex or anything, its just got two guys kissing and snuggling in it. ^_^; But its really pretty good as far as yaoi goes.
Samurai Champloo is pretty good too, Ive been enjoying it. I really like Fuu.
FLCL is probly the most random anime ever, besides Paranoia Agent. I really liked FLCL, or FRCR as it would be in Japanese (no l in their kanas)
Paranoia Agent anime's bizzareness fails to be able to be expressed with my current set of words. lol
As for movies Im an utter fan-girl (the near squealing type) for Hayao Miyazaki's movies. And Howl's Moving Castle was no exception. I got to see the original movie as an English subbed version before it came to the US. hehe I also liked Princess Mononoke, but not as much as Spirited Away - I still cry during the ending of it, and Ive seen it 4 times. ^_^

I like certain shows, but I find with anime you have to wade through a lot of crap to find the good stuff. Here are the ones I got into, although there are others that I have liked over the years.
Films:
Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2
Patlabor 1 & 2
Macross: Do You Remember Love (probably a little before the time of some of you )
Ninja Scroll
Akira
Series:
Macross (SDFM, Plus, Zero, not 7!)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GiG
Samurai Champloo
Patlabor
Cowboy Bebop
Shows I enjoyed as a kid:
Astroboy
Starblazers (a.k.a. Space Battleship Yamato)
Speed Racer (a.k.a. Mach Go Go Go)
Battle of the Planets (a.k.a. Gatchaman)
And even though it isn't anime, I love Samurai Jack.

Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato was my most favourite "cartoon" when I was little, then Transformers came along. hehe. I still love the anime though.
I still call those two cartoons, even though I know they are anime now...

I know its just semantics, but most people dont consider x-men or other marvel comics cartoons anime.
Anime is just the Japanese word for animation, and they are both the same thing in concept in that they are both animated, but dont go around to anime-cons and call the xmen/fantastic 4, anime.

I think I get the same type of reaction, but most people are tending to place it in the same category as "hentai" rather than anime....
I think alot of the mis-informed either associate anime to the extremes... ie - the "fluffy" side in jedigoku's case, and the hardcore demon-porn in mine.. hehehe...

Could one of you nice people explain exactly what they are and the differences between them
I went straight from bugs bunny and batman to ESPN, so I don't know too much about this stuff.
But it sounds interesting, so do you offer a beginners suggestion packet?

Anime is from Asia - most generally from Japan.
Cartoons are from the US, the US doesnt make anime.
What does anime mean, its just animation. There the similarities end.
Anime usually has a lot more content to it than western cartoons. This is because its used more widely than live action shows (from what Ive seen). Anime is used to sell stuff like the West uses sex(y women) to sell stuff. And not all anime if for kids, the majority of what Ive watched would make kids ask awkward questions (and not necessarily about sex).
When you think of cartoons BuggsBunny and Batman usually come to mind and GI Joe and Transformers, though the latter is actually imported anime. ^_^
When you go out searching for anime, dont judge the rest of it by whatever slop Cartoon Network is pushing off on us - like DBZ and One Piece.
And if youre going to be going back to dialup, I would suggest downloading fan-translated manga (not the lisenced stuff), which is always broken up into chapters that are easily handled on dialup.
^_^ Hope that helps.

Erm... no its not. One Piece is on for an hour every saturday night at 10 on cartoon network.
Family Guy and American Dad are on Fox, as was Futurama.
DBZ sucks, and its pointless.

Hmm... either your version of Fox is much different or were not talking about the same crappy anime.
Its the one about the pirates and the captain is a gawky "rubber boy", and the two girls Robin and Nami.

Sooo, if anime is asian cartoons, does manga mean asian comics?
And what is the best all round example of the genre, that has a broad appeal, so I could try it out and not hate it

Jedigoku, you could always stop posting on that other thread. I didnt even know it existed until you complained about this one, and it wasnt even at the top of the list time you or whoever posted on it again.
Yeah, what Prime said. Just check out any of the above anime (except for DBZ).

and where do you find them, are they all on the web?

Some anime you can find on the net, animesuki is a good place for the non-lisenced stuff (they dont put up link to lisenced stuff).
Try the movies first: Anything by Hayao Miyazaki (spirited away, howls moving castle., princess mononoke). Ghost in the Shell... or you could turn on cartoon network at 11pm on saturdays.. they have alot of good anime on at that time.

Thanks, I guess I'll try the saturday night thing, but my favorite music video show comes on at 12am and we are supposed to be moving this weekend, so like everything I touch, that will probably be delayed for a litle while
Renting movies is insane around here, the only places where it's cheaper than going to the theater usually don't have much
