I dig that they decided to add the last three paragraphs in there so that the article wouldn't be made of 100% crazy.

Capitalism? Please, Adam Smith rolls in his grave every time the Military-Industrial Complex is referred to as capitalism. For an anti-US "socialist" dictator, Hugo Chavez is twice delusional.

I'm pretty sure the entire U.S. economy can't be boiled down to the military-industrial complex.

At the moment, no. Give it a few more years.

No, you're very right. I just dislike the label of capitalism to our economy. Capitalism means competition, and our regulations oppose competition in all the wrong places and rarely of the right ones.

When people get tired of bashing him as customary, maybe then they can get what he meant by "maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet". He never said there was life there, nor that it actually ended by a capitalistic cataclysm of some sort. He has a project and exactly because he manages to piss some powerful people with it, he's labeled a lunatic.

The media surely enjoys transforming the guy into a sack of laughs.

It's still a ridiculous and stupid thing to say. Are you saying I need to be taken seriously as long as I preface an absurd statement with a maybe?

Maybe Humanity is actually from a planet called Djren, but were exiled when our forebears committed crimes against the Djrenian Government and were forced to flee across the universe, finally settling on a small planet called Earth and exterminating the current dominant race, the sentient Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The difference between his and your sentence is that he actually meant something by it. He demonizes a system and uses would-be life on Mars as some kind of metaphor to reinforce this idea. The fact that it was enough to warrant a whole article - which completely ignores what he's actually saying - about it says a lot about where the media stands towards him.

Or maybe it's an act so that the rest of the West won't take him seriously when he does things like seize property and possessions for his little fiefdom, as he did with some missionaries we were supporting (seized the building they were thinking of buying for a church, seized the plane the missionaries OWNED to fly medicines and food to interior native tribes, and made up a ridiculous story about them running an illegal drug operation). He's been doing this systematically for a number of years now. People who disagree with him suddenly find their property gone, or the people just 'disappear'.

The guy is either bat-sh*t crazy, or brilliant in making the world think he's bat-sh*t crazy so he can cover up the crimes he's committing building his dictatorship.

I'm going with a little from Column A and a little from Column B.

Or maybe he's really a Malkavian wearing a lot of sunblock.

When reading news on paper or in the interwebz is most people's soruce of information, one can't properly hope to have a clear view of the issue at hand. I'm not saying Chavez doesn't have dictatorial tendencies, that he's a beacon of freedom, that he's not personalist, that he's a saint and should be canonized - I'm just saying that much of what's believed to be certain about him, isn't.

Most people probably haven't even heard one of his (numerous) speeches and get most of his "quotes" from a third party. While certainly the majority don't have the time to sit through 3 or 4 hours of speech in spanish, they probably should at least question how a "moron", "lunatic" or whatever you'd like to call him today manages to hold power for so long and why the press is in such a quest to remove him from his desk ASAP.

If you're one of those people, then perhaps a good starting material is the chance documentary The revolution will not be televised.

I'm just going by what I've seen him say at UN speeches and some of his other things. His mannerisms and how he says things indicate to me some tremendous narcissism and not a little bit of megalomania.

His behaviors (seizing property on a whim for his own use) are not the behaviors of someone who cares about anything other than himself.

@C.A.D.---I think that a lot of things that are believed about him (but by whom might be the real question) probably aren't far from the mark. He's a narcisistic meglomaniac as Jae has pointed out and is obsessed with control. Like his Iranian conterpart, he's given to acting the buffoon when making public speeches. He's following the classic path of many dictators.....absolute control over as much as possible and focusing his people's attention on an outside threat...in this case America....to distract his followers from the destruction he's wreaking upon their nation. He's merely fortunate to be sitting atop a rather large supply of a highly sought after commodity.....oil.....which has allowed him get as far as he has (his own innate ruthlessness notwithstanding).

Still, let's remember, this thread is NOT Kavar's.....so let's keep it light.

Being bountiful of resources hasn't actually worked for most countries. Just ask anyone in Africa or the Middle East. If anything, it just makes a region more turbulent with foreigners competing to get exclusivity in somehow using those resources: a process that normally ends with puppet governments, underdogs whose masters lie elsewhere, but not inside the country.

Still, yeah, sorry for turning this into such a Kavar-ish thread. It's just too bloody hard to argue such a topic without doing so.

Doesn't always have to work, but it does help those like the former Saddam, the Saudi Royals and Chavez if they are ruthless enough in the end to keep the reins of power in their hands. Remember, nothing lasts forever....
