Why TOR Will Fail

This guy made a video about what someone from EA getting laid off said about it:

Says he doesn't want to play another generic MMO.
Says he won't pay attention to story or dialog, and all he wants in an MMO is to know what to kill and how many of them, to level up and do raids.
Does not compute.

I really don't understand the appeal of doing boring quests for no reason other than leveling up. Why anyone is willing to do hours of busywork just to see some arbitrary numbers rise is beyond me. I need that to be backed up by a good story, good gameplay, or both. The social aspect is irrelevant, since I could go outside and have actual, more satisfying, human interaction, without having to grind XP for hours and pay $15 a month. In fact, that's part of why TOR, whether it fails or not, is not for me.

Anyway, his points seem to contradict themselves, and a soon to be fired EA employee is not a reliable source. Next.

"Why TOR Will Fail"

Expecting well-written multiple-paragraph exposé about the fallacies of a KotOR MMO.

See post by some self-contradicting vlog puke.

This is one of the parts that caught my attention, especially not paying attention to the dialogue. Many, many gamers who have played KOTOR and TSL did not pay attention to what was going on.

I learned this simple fact because I made KOTOR videos for YouTube and the comments just blew me away enough to inspire this thread:

Worst part is he'll be playing the game eventually.

There isn't. Raiding, PvPing (and of course having a large e-penor to show off) and other high-level stuff are his definition of fun.

Helpful!
So what seems to be craved here, is a MMO with a unique story, game-play etc...when he isn't going to focus at all on the story? Why does he want it then? Does he read books for the hell of it too? What is the fun of playing through any game, namely those that several hours need to be spent on doing so, and if someone asked you when finished, "What was it about?", all you have to say is, "I don't know, I was just playing the game", or anything remotely similar. Makes me wonder why he READ THE BLOG.

What? I don't really think that is something to brag about. Maybe if it took up that much after a few expansion packs, I could see it.

Judging entire game before it comes out, before its had a chance to mature and worse, before it's had a chance to be fully populated and played through by people who are more qualified to determine whether they themselves will enjoy the game or not.

Awesome.

I would've given this game a chance if it were "buy the disc and play forever". I play on the PC to get away from the subscription stuff, like Xbox Live. Its sad that LA has looked down this avenue again, after SWG.

And this is true for a lot of other games as well. It really blows my mind how people can play a story-driven game and miss out on some of the most important parts of the story. I'm pretty sure gameplay wasn't the main attraction point of the KotOR games, but there you have it.

^Exactly. I dont understand how you can play the game without knowing the story. there were so many choices to choose which way the game would go, and people just randomly clicked a phrase?

I am unable to comprehend this. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

That's one of the main reasons I'm not buying it. It's not like a non-subscription MMO can't make money. Just look at Guild Wars, which has done pretty well (for a non-WoW MMO) by selling expansions.

If I wanted great RPG combat without worrying about the plot, I'd play ToEE.

I believe they could make money while still being a non-subscription MMO. They could do things like have you buy exclusive items and, like Liverandbacon said, expansions.

Yeah... not buyin it. The fail, that is... I'm required by fanboy law to buy this game. It has Star Wars, and BioWare on it. I never trust info from an EX employee to be accurate. Laid off, fired or quit, doesn't matter. Chances are there's a reason they aren't part of the company anymore, so giving a positive review is not likely. Especially within a short time of being there.

I don't care what anyone says. I'll try it for myself. If I like it, great. If I don't, at least I tried it for myself.

There's the possibility that he's a rehire. Then he would be both an ex and not ex

"More than $300 million" spent on development? SRSLY?

I believe that about as much as I do GL's claim that the Star Wars live-action series would cost $50 million an episode.

Say, Jeff, didn't you post something about this very same disgruntled ex-employee awhile back?

I'm only interested in a few things about this game:
1) All the different types of whoop-ass that can be done in the game
2) anything new and original for SW relating to the story and such
3) If Darth Malgus is somehow connected to Revan's fate (and from some subtle clues we've gotten I'm inclined to think yes)

This game? Looks like it has potential to be good but we really won't know until awhile into it. I'm not exactly happy about the whole subscription thing. I personally would opt for another installment of KOTOR, but ce'le vie, that's not going to happen. So I can sorta understand the whole hoping it crashes and burns though I am basically neutral on it.

Until I can afford my new dream machine, though, I'm afraid my eMachines T5274 I'm currently using will have to keep on plugging away. The closest I could get to this game would be if I were writing some SW lore column of the numerous storylines in TOR and I had my own team of dedicated TOR players to submit content to me. Unfortunately I'm not a web developer so I don't have my own site.

As to the guy's comments: First he's complaining that it is "going to just be like every other MMO", then criticizes it for its storyline because he just wants to get in and grind levels? Contradiction much?

Whatever. Hate it, love it, I don't care either way.

I too would possibly give it a chance and buy the game if it was free to play.

From what i've seen of the gameplay trailers i'm pretty confident that like all other mmos i've tried a trial for that I won't like the combat. The visuals are also a bit too much like WoW for my liking.
Contrary to the vlogger I think the dialog tree is something that will help immerse the player into the missions and make it feel like less like grinding.
