The Outlander Club Favorite Game of 2011

Please vote for your favorite game of 2011, you can vote for as many as you want, but please limit it to three choices.

Despite its flaws, like the horrendous boss battles, I'd have to say Deus Ex 3 takes first place for me. It was especially impressive in this day and age of modernised franchise rape that they actually produced something worthy of the DE name.

As always, I'm choosing games I've played and finished, so sadly no Portal 2 or The Witcher 2, which I'm guessing are both big contenders for first place. In a way, I chose two games that were a bit of a disappointment, but still managed to be amazing games. Uncharted 3 was a bit too much 'more of the same' while gameplay wasn't, in my opinion, an improvement on the second, but it was a beautiful game and an exhilarating ride which I won't soon forget.

And then Deux Ex HR, which didn't offer the same variety of options as the first game and, well, let's face it, stupid endings, it still did more right than most games made these days, with an excellent design and perfect gameplay.

I'm sad for Bastion or Rayman Origins. Haven't finished the former and haven't bought the latter, but they both deserve the attention.

I mostly sourced my games from other Game of the Year nominations from sites. Skyward Sword did make the cut for Best Wii games on a lot, but not overall, so I thought it should be safe to exclude. Besides, a CERTAIN FRIEND OF MINE told me that it wasn't all that good.

I'm voting for 2 games I have not finished...sue me.

Only played 4 games on the list, so choice is limited.

Just voted on what I've actually played so Skyrim (of course), Portal 2 and Minecraft got my votes.
Between those 3, I've been thoroughly entertained. Heh, actually took a break from Skyrim the past 2 days ( I NEED sleep) and started on a new Minecraft world

I DO have Dark Souls for xbox, but haven't gotten around to playing it. Skyrim was released, and with ToR and ME3 on my horizons.. may be awhile

Skyrim and DA II. Somehow, DA II isn't on the list. Sigh - well, I liked it anyway, flaws and all. (Ducks as tomatoes and other rotten fruit start flying) As these are the only two games I've played this year, I guess that makes them my favorites. Haven't managed to start Deus Ex: Human Revolution - damn, the interface is complicated.

Seeing as every new Zelda is just a remake of Ocarina of Time, the thread you want is "Favorite Game of 1998".

No offence, but you really don't know what you're talking about.

Firstly, if you really wanted to insult the series, you would've said that that every Zelda game is just a remake of A Link to the Past... which incidentally is how Ocarina of Time's development started out... (that and being a first person game)

However, with that said, every 3D Zelda game that has come after Ocarina of Time has been very different from the last starting with Majora's Mask which spun the entire concept of time on its head and chanced the focus of the story and character in the game from Ocarina of Time and all previous Zelda games, turning it into a very new and dark direction. Then The Wind Waker came along and changed the dynamic yet again with a more bright and cartoonish spin with an art style that will endure for a very long time, not to mention is very strange humour found in the game... and then yes, I guess when you come right down to it the game that is most like Ocarina of Time is Twilight Princess which also borrows concepts of A Link to the Past as well. Truth be told, I don't think TP was the game Nintendo wanted to make, but the game that fans pressured them to make with their nostalgia high of OoT.

As for Skyward Sword, it's got a hell of a lot going for it to set it apart from every other Zelda game even though it very cleverly references all past Zelda games (due to it's 25th anniversary celebration of the series). The gameplay is something that's very new to the series and they way the story and progression of the game is handled very differently as well. In fact, in many ways this game is more Metroid than Zelda in terms of progression and more Punch-Out!! in terms of combat mechanics.

Of course, if that was tl;dr for people, my original statement stands

Obviously, Zelda games still have a lot to offer if a lot of people keep playing them and keep loving them. I've got an issue with the Elder Scrolls series myself, but I got to accept that's what people like these days.

This is the first time I've seen you joke about anything, usually you're all "this game isn't as good as it should be, etc, etc"

Besides, it wasn't about "dissing my beloved Zelda" it's about catching out something stupid someone says like "Portal and Halo are pretty much the same game"...

That would probably be that whole "text is a poor medium to convey underlying intent" thing. Perhaps I should use more emoticons? Or possibly a HK-47-style descriptive preface would be more appropriate. I have been required to do that in real life on occasion, although usually for the opposite reason.

Concerning Zelda, I have played OOT, WW and TP. They had their moments, although I never quite grasped the source of the fervour the series seems to inspire. But to each their own I guess - no doubt my own own predilections are as equally puzzling to other people. There's no chance of me ever playing SS though, what with the whole Wii-mote thing. Far too gimmicky for my tastes.

@ DP: The funny thing about SS is that it finally, at the end of Wii's lifespan, shows off what Nintendo promised with the system to begin with but could never get across with earlier attempts.

Everything is surprisingly precise and the game gets you to think before you strike. In many ways it's a lot more intelligent than the usual button pushing gimmick you usually get.

Because I choose my games of the year based on when I played them, independently of when they were released, and only games I have actually finished, my list is (and since I haven't had a decent computer for years, some will be a couple of years old).

Best story/writing: Alpha Protocol, heck it even made me like archetypes I usually want to stab (like Sie). Runner up: Fallout NV
Best game play: Tied Human revolution and New Vegas
Most believable world: Deus ex HR
Most mature (as in dealing with mature themes): New Vegas
Best mechanics I hope other games emulate: AP: making almost every small decision matter in a sensible way(also only having to kill one named guy in the entire game is a nice touch).
Best strategy: King Arthur the role playing war game
Biggest disappointment: Skyrim
Game of the year: Alpha Protocol, because it's a game that actually keeps the "every choice has consequences" promise.

Checking out seems not to do much.

Say it isn't so mur'phon...

Game mechanics is what made me loath AP.I would almost agree with every point you have with even this one, but still can't get past the mini-game mechanics.

On Fallout:NV I can agree with you on, even with Skyrim and TOR on my PC, I still want to go back to Vegas. May have to plug in AP once again just to see if there were any updates.

@:Mim: Well, there is a reason why I highlighted that one feature (also, the intel system should also be copied by games like Deus ex and Mass effect). Luckily for me, my eyes had no problem with the hacking (which I assume was your problem). While the main gameplay was decent and not good, and the boss fights where over the top and unnecessary, the whole choice and consequence coupled with excellent writing was enough for me (also daring to make it possible for me to think I got a happy ending, only for me to uncover intel in a later playthrough that screwed it up). I guess you could say it gets the reward for actually trying to tell a story like a video game, unlike most others who seem to be written by people wanting to make movies and treating the player as an undisciplined dog they need to keep in line.

While I agree with almost everything murph says here, wasn't AP a 2010 release?

While Skyrim is consuming more of my time than should be considered healthy, there's no doubt that it's severely overrated and that both FO:NV and DX:HR got robbed.

Yes, it was on last years poll.

mur'phon just didn't get around to it until 2011 because of PC issues.

Also Sabretooth The Outlander Club Favorite Game was my gig you should be doing the runner up thread.

You're not alone in that. Only one of those I'm likely to play anytime soon may be TOR if/when some of the early levels are free (so as to compete w/mmo's like WoW, etc..).
