Missing Files from KOTOR 1

This is a mystery that has befuddled me for years now.

Back in 2006/2007, I got a used version of KOTOR for the Xbox. I played through the game many times always as light side and always using the same player head. That is the third black male head or the bald guy who kinda looks like Mace Windu.

Eventually, the game didn't work any more since it kept getting stuck at Taris. So I got a new version of the game for the Xbox again.

Now here's where it gets interesting.

Everyone knows that in KOTOR when you play on the dark side your player head changes to show the corruption, but when I played the game on the Xbox for the first time, I also noticed that the player head changes for the light side as well. After around 10-15 light side points, his eyes would sort of be more open and bright and his skin was a bit lighter I believe. And after around 30 or so light side points, the icon background would change from yellow to blue.

Now lot's of people on the internet say that there are only changes to the player head for getting dark side points. And the thing is, the second version of the game I bought after the first one broke didn't have any visual changes for the light side.

But I'm absolutely positive that for at least one character model, there were light side visual changes. I played that game so many times before it broke, and each time it happened.

But here's the weirdest thing of all. A week ago I got the PC version to play the game again. I picked my favorite player head, but I discovered that the light side changes weren't working again. I figure if it's not working I can fix it just by finding the light side texture and replacing it with the normal head.

So I get Kotor Tool and go looking for the texture, but it's totally missing. And the more I search on the internet for some sort of clue as to where these missing textures (and icons) could be, the more evidence I find that they simply don't exist.

So it's like what the hell. What happened to the files? Were they in an old Xbox release and then removed for the PC version? That doesn't seem to make any sense. I guess it's possible that the eye thing was done by modifying the eyelids of the model so it wouldn't really be a texture, but even then the blue icon should still exist.

I'd really like to find out what happened here. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? Of course I'd like to find these files so I could finally fix my game, but at this point I'd settle for just knowing that they do actually exist and that I'm not the only one who has experienced this.

tl;dr
When I first played KOTOR on the Xbox, the player head changed for light side choices as well as dark side choices. Now that I have the PC version, it doesn't work and I can't find the files that were used in the Xbox version anywherei. Wtf?

Simple answer, as far as I know, they don't exist. I'd chalk up you remembering them to just a "corrupted" memory, so to speak.

That's impossible.

How could a corrupted disc add a feature to a game? That would be a miracle on the order of a monkey with a typewriter reproducing Hamlet.

I didn't say the disc was corrupted, I said that it's more likely you are remembering incorrectly and remembering something that didn't happen.

Considering how many times I played that game, that's also impossible.

That was the main reason I always played the light side. I liked the look of the character better. I remember always trying to get light side points early in Taris so that my character wouldn't look half asleep.

Here's a screenshot that I just took from my game:

Notice how he looks like a loser because of the droopy eyes? Well I did too. Thankfully, it usually only took about 2 hours of gameplay to get enough light side points so that he would look alive. I clearly remember remarking this when I played before.

As far as we know, this doesn't exist in the PC version. I've checked the file that controls all the appearances, and it only has a column for darkside texture transition. There is no indication that there is any way to do this in the PC version.

I too have almost always played the lightside, and I don't remember it happening whenever I played it on the PC. I do remember that I was shocked the first time I played evil, and my character quickly started to look horrible with a cracked face. So, I definitely believe that you would remember how your character looked, and that you would notice if it was different. All I'm saying is that the neither the files nor the capability to do this exist on the vanilla PC version. I've never heard of anybody doing lightside transitions on KotOR for the PC.

Maybe you lucked out with the first XBOX version and got one that was different?

Well it's clear that there's something different about one of my Xbox versions that most people don't know about.

I don't have the discs or cases with me right now or else I might try to figure out if there was a way to tell when they were made.

Do you know if it's possible for the disc to be modded in some way? Like, idk, if someone made a mod that added that feature and then put it on the actual Xbox disc?

I really don't know anything about XBOX modding, but I'm almost certain that you wouldn't be able to add stuff to the XBOX disc and have it work.

Your best be would be to look through kotorfiles.com and see if there's a reskin for that head or something that you like.

That's what I would think, especially since the disc had the sticker on it, so it probably wasn't made by someone who burned a new disc.

I went there and didn't find anything that looked like the game I was playing. Of course it would be nice to find a better head, but what I'm really trying to figure out at this point is the mystery about just what's wrong with my Xbox game.

I've never tried anything like this, but do you know if it would be possible to read the disc onto a computer and then search the source files? If there is something strange about my disc, then I'm interested in seeing all of what's there. If I could retrieve the assets, it might be able to become a mod.

An interesting follow up on this. I was working with the heads.2da file today, and I found that there are two unused columns titled headtexg and headtexvg. These follow in the same pattern as the evil texture columns, but none of them are used at all.

I guess it is possible to implement heads that get brighter as you go lighter, but the files don't seem to exist.

Maybe they stand for Head Texture: Good and Head Texture: Very Good? Considering that on the left, it is Evil, Very Evil, Very Very Evil, and Very Very Very Evil (and if you look at the head texture names, there are that many dark side textures).

Forgive, but never forget. No amount of DLC can take back lying to your fan base. Trust is earned, not downloaded.

Stick some textures in and see what happens when you edit the LS points with the save editor. Should be easy enough to test.

Edit: Did a quick test myself and it doesn't seem to use textures in those slots. Presumably it is specified somewhere else. Script perhaps? I guess if you can find where the DS texture swap triggers are specified, you could see about activating/adding LS ones.

I'm so going to try this now with dummy textures.

EDIT:

Tried this, but looks like the game won't load the "v" and "vg" versions.
