Improved Peragus Asteroid Fields

Hey guys, longtime KotOR fan and veteran of the Team Gizka forums here. I haven't really been much of a forum user since the Team Gizka forums died a few years ago, but I still remember many of the usernames of those who posted there, and was pleasantly surprised to see some of those people under the "Currently Active Users" listing here on LucasForums as I've checked back in over the past few days (Sith Holocron, BIOSHazard, Hassat Hunter, etc). Glad to see that many of you haven't lost your love for KotOR, either.

Anyways, 8+ years after its release, I've finally released my first [extremely minor] mod for KotOR II. All it does is take the abysmal default Peragus asteroid field textures and replace them with one I made. It isn't perfect, but I think it's a vast improvement over the game's vanilla textures.

Below are four screenshots, two of the what the game looks like by default, and two of what it looks like with my mod installed (warning: 1920x1080 images).

AUTHOR: VasiliiZaytsev (aka RenegadeSniper7)
CONTACT: RenegadeSniper7 on LucasForums.com
MOD NAME: Improved Peragus Asteroid Fields
VERSION: 1.0
DATE: July 26th, 2013

---------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION: This is my first mod, and it's an extremely basic one. It takes the default 2D asteroid field texture used in the Peragus
asteroid fields in the tutorial/prologue and outside of the Ebon Hawk hangar bay, and replaces them with much nicer ones. While it isn't
perfect, I feel that it's a vast improvement over the eyesores that were the default textures. See the included screenshots to see the default
textures vs. mine.

NOTE: This DOES NOT replace the texture(s) of the individual free-floating 3D asteroids around Peragus, only the asteroid field textures.

INSTALLATION: Copy and paste the "EBO_Astr.tga" and "PER_As02.tga" files to your KotOR II override folder.

UNINSTALLATION: Remove the aforementioned files from your override folder.

PERMISSIONS: If you want to use this mod as part of your own, that's fine. Just credit me as "VasiliiZaytsev/RenegadeSniper7." And if you do
use my mod in yours, feel free to let me know by PMing me on LucasForums! I'd be interested to see what you're working on.
----------------------------------------------

EDIT: I made a couple of changes to the mod:

Quote:
/*v1.1 CHANGELOG:*/

- Fixed a bug where the top and bottom of the texture was being slightly cut off in-game as the field oscillated up and down, causing a few
asteroids to visibly slide in and out of existence. A "buffer zone" of empty space has been added to the top and bottom of the replacement
textures to prevent this issue from happening.

- Improved the placement of asteroids within the texture to produce a more realistic look.
Removed the original download link in this thread so that people don't accidentally download it. You can download v1.1 from KotORFiles or Deadly Stream:

----------------------------------------------

P.S. On the subject of KotORFiles: what exactly happened to that website? I know there was that whole drama a few years ago where it was supposed to be shut down, and then it ended up being bought and kept alive, but now it seems to be pretty broken. When I go there, it almost always loads a version of the site from around March 2011. After refreshing a bunch of times, it eventually loads what I presume is the current version, with files as recent as July 2013. But, then, half of the newer files give me invalid file ID errors. Anyone know what's up with that? It's disappointing; it used to be such a great website.

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone! I updated the OP with v1.1; I made a couple of changes to improve the quality of the mod:

Quote:

- Improved the placement of asteroids within the texture to produce a more realistic look.
Download link for v1.1

New screenshots of the update added to the OP as well.

Not right now. I don't really have the skill/experience to do anything major, so if I do anything else, it'll be more minor stuff like this. But maybe if I see something I really want to mod, I'll take the time to learn the intricacies of KotOR modding.

Am I the only one that sees that fuzzy line of asteroid on 1st and 2nd screenshots? It seems more visible with your HD image, so if you could fix this, it would look even better. If not, still way better than original.

I'm not sure I see what you're referring to... Can you circle the area you're talking about and post it?

Perhaps he was talking about these?

I didn't even notice them until they were pointed out. A combination of inexperience and fascination I guess. Amazing job by the way.

Edit: If you for some reason - like me - can't see the image, here is the link: http://www.lucasforums.com/picture.p...pictureid=9543

Ohhh, that. Unfortunately, I don't know any way to fix that. The way the asteroid fields work is just a repeating texture that moves along a set curved path to give the illusion of a moving asteroid field. What you're looking at there is the texture from an angle as it curves around its set path. It could probably be changed by editing the module somehow, but I have absolutely no idea how to do that and it seems pretty complex.

Yeah, that's what I meant; and what I suspected. Bah, too bad. Nevertheless, that'S a good mod idea and a better Asteroid field for sure. I'd love to see what other ideas you might have

thank you both appreciate that..sure is a nice improvement you did, and i will look at that cycling of the texture i may be able to figure out a fix for that but no matter if not, it is a superb job you did. very nice indeed.

Yeah, I took a look at that, but module editing is far beyond the scope of my knowledge/abilities, unfortunately. I was considering expanding this mod by adding more of the 3D asteroids that actually float around, but that seemed too difficult for me at this point.

You did a great job...thanks ..the technical stuff can be tricky at times and what you did works fine and is a great improvment i would go so far as to say it deserves to be considered a restoration. to the original vision that just was limited at the time of production. Well done.
