Kyle isn't a jedi master.
Nope, he's a Jedi Lord!
I read somewhere in an thread called something like "kyle vs luke", and some people were saying that Klye isn't a Jedi Master. I was playing Jedi Knight again and I noticed that the jedi ranking thingy said that he was a Jedi Lord in the last level where you fight Jerec.
In a couple levels before it said he was a Jedi Master though.

I agree that calling him a Jedi Lord is a pretty bad oversight, since Luke thinks of it as a great honour to refer to himself as a Jedi Master.
I hate to say it, but maybe they'll explain the ranking in JKO...

In JO they'll probably just further confuse it....actually seeing as Raven are making it then it might all make sense. LEC on their own though always manage to muck things up.

Your ranking in JK depends entirely on how you play the game. It's possible to be a Jedi Lord quite a bit earlier, but it's also possible to complete the game without even becoming a Jedi Lord at all (I'm pretty sure).
It depends on stuff like weapons accuracy and number of secrets found each level as to how many stars you get and therefore what your rank is.

Hmmm, that's interesting I never really looked at the ranking of him in detail before, you're probably right.
It's probably the number of secrets you find that depends on how soon he's ranked higher.
Maybe the entire time in which the game took place was a lot longer then people thought, and it was really a lot longer or something, and that's why he could be a jedi lord.
Or maybe the power of the valley inhanced his jedi powers, heh I don't know.

They probably didnt think much about It, and just gave the ranks the first name that came to their minds
Probably GL never checked that, and he wouldnt agree with it, as Jedi Lords are never mentioned as a ranking higher than Knight and Master

Hi, well, I don't believe Luke is all that, even if he's Vader's son. I mean, there's also Kyp Durron, and that guy is a LOT stronger than Luke and Vader put together.

umm, the Jedi Academy Trilogy, by Kevin J Anderson... hes an ok author, no Zahn though... and if i remimber Luke said Kyp had the most potential (remimber potential from that earlier kyle/luke discussion) that Luke had ever tested, Luke never tested himself, or Sir Vader, so how can you tell if Kyp was stronger, Kyp wasnt concieved by metichlorians...

I might point out that JK's ranking system is suspect simply because there is no "Knight" rank in that game at all.
Personally, I always treated JK's level 7 --originally "Master"-- as Knight and level 8 as Master... but hey, that's just me.
If I recall correctly a couple mods actually changed it to read thusly, too.

Not last I checked, no. I came equipped with no Y chromosome and nothing seems to be changing in that regard...
No, I am not "available". No, I don't want to see your lightsaber. No, I do not resemble Princess Leia (nor will I model her early ROTJ attire). No, I am not susceptible to Jedi mind tricks. No, I don't want to learn about any Wookiee mating rituals... **continues speech at some length**

I've been lurking for ages, and had something to reply to way back when. I got as far as registering before I thought better of it.
That's pretty typical for me. I don't post much no matter what the topic, even on boards I moderate. **shrug**
Anyway, thanks for the welcome, no matter how tentative... :P

Here's one way you could look at it. Barring saying that Kyle was the greatest Jedi ever, how about this?
Say he was just an average Jedi, but, his immense powers had something to do with the Valley of the Jedi.
Think about it. In the EU, Mara Jade is weak in the Force, but the Emperor fuels her force ability, so she has power, until he dies. In the Jedi Academy Trilogy, a similar thing happens with Exar Kun and his disciples. He uses his force ability to augment their weak or average powers, to incredible levels.
In a similar fashion (and this goes for the Dark Forces novels as well), the spirits of the Jedi in the Valley are able to add to Kyle's powers, to increase his command of the force at an exponential rate (the good jedi spirits). In a similar fashion, Jerec seeks to harnass the dark jedi spirits (and eventually the light as well, which would lead to his near omnipotence, had he claimed the entire valley force well).
So in that way, it would make perfect sense, that Kyle, as he got closer to the Valley, he became much more powerful, and as he went away, he became less powerful.
After winning, his powers would probably languish, which would explain how he was weaker in MotS and then in JKO.
Just another way of explaining it...
PS: The rankings in JK were 8=Lord and 7=Master. MotS had 8=Master, and 7=Knight.

No, Matt, I think that'll be quite sufficient...
I quite like that explanation, Kurgan. It cuts the relatively unknown figure of Katarn back down to size while still allowing for the events of the previous game to be possible.
And you nuts that like the X vs. Y arguments can keep going. Just substitute someone like Corran Horn for Luke and you're set.

anway, back to kyle... damn kurgan, that the best explination anyone could think of... maybe kyle has his own powers, but he didnt really fully develope them because of the 'Valley of the Jedi' effect... not a bad idea...

Well Kyle should be at least a Jedi Master in JK2, I mean it's been 7 years since JK (in JK2) he should be a lot more experienced then in JK.
*Stormtrooper commander in front of his troop of stormtroopers walks up to general*
Commander: "We have succesfully defeated those two wookie armies."
*An Ewok starts throwing pebbles*
Stormtroopers: "AAAAAHHHHHGGGGG!"

Well of course then there is the preliminary explanation that LEC gave.. that Kyle was "afraid of the Darkside" so he "gave up" and went into retirement/hiding and let his skills deteriorate.
Of course that doesn't mean he'd stop being force sensitive, and he might grow in awareness of the force, just that he'd be out of practice, assuming he did NOTHING in all that time (doubtful).
But I like the above explanation better (and if fits better in the EU mythos) than simply saying he sat on his butt for a few years and forgot everything.
Along those same lines, if "not using the force" over time makes you weaker, then how would somebody like Yoda remain a super-powerful Jedi while he was living on Dagobah, with nobody around for miles in that swamp? What did he do all day, lift rocks and twigs?
