It's based on the crystal they use to construct it. Each crystal has a different "parabolic" value. The actual "light Blade" is a parabolic curve that starts and finishes at the hilt. So the blade goes out, does a u-turn and comes back at the hilt. So the light actually doesn't go out and then suddenly stop in the air. Here's what I don't know, why doesn't the hilt get melted whe the blade comes back?

So anyways, the blade length is determined by the crystal. The crystal will cause the blade to curve back to the hilt at a certain distance from the hilt. HTH

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall softly on your fields
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand

PS That's all based on EU novels. George Lucas may have a different idea of how the Lightsaber works in his mind, that may never know

No problem, that's what we're here for...well...that and we have no lives!

Seriously though, if you have questions, ask. Don't be intimidated by the Newbie, n00b etc.. trash talk that gets thrown around here.

lightsaber

*ponders* Actually...although, don't quote me on it, because I don't remember...but I believe there is a way to build a lightsaber. Only one small problem. If you turn it off, you get a fusion explosion.

Odd, if fusion stops then the superheated plasma within the magnetic field dissapates and the whole thing just stops. No explosion.
