Oh no! What console shall I get?
I have decided to order a PS2 in time christmas, but I'm having second thoughts. Should I get it, or lay my hands on a Dreamcast (for the new version of Jedi Power Battles and Super Bombad Racing or one of the other new consoles?
Should I stuff it and get a PSX?
Help!
PS. Obi-Wan is coming out for the PS2... thats what I read (from the PS2 site) anyway.

Gotta correct you, Tom. Obi-Wan has not offically been slated for a PS2 release. What you read was a reviewer saying that it would be a good idea to release it on the new console.

I did? Oh.
Anyway, the main stress of the post is to bring up a discussion on what is the overall console for the average Star Wars Fan

For the average Star Wars fan looking for the best games, I would say that the DC is coming strong, with JPB, Racer, Bombad Racing and Demolition! And the price in the UK is now 149, so it's pretty cheap!
PS2 with Starfighter and Bombad Racing... Starfighter looks good, but if you have to get a PS2, wait for the price to drop! Bombad is out for other platforms as well!
And GameCube with the lovely Rogue Squadron 2. We don't know about any other games yet, but if RS2 is anything like the original, this will be a killer. Kinda long wait though...
X-Box... No games announced...

The truth? Go with a PS2. Maybe not immediately; Lucasarts is still getting its feet wet in the next-gen console market.
They have yet to show a real commitment to the Dreamcast. Proof, you ask? There are NO games slated for release on the Dreamcast that are NOT PORTS. Racer is a straight PC port; JPB will only add higher resolution textures and models to existing design. Word has it that they'll skip any original designs for DC and go straight to PS2. Starfighter is the proof.
We went to LEC with proposals for a Dreamcast version of TPM with added levels, high-resolution skinned models etc. etc. in April of 1999, and they weren't at all interested. Even during the summer of 99, when the PSX version was still unreleased, we continued to pester them that a DC version would be quite neat, to no avail.
My personal opinion is that LEC underestimated the Dreamcast, realized that it WAS a good platform right before US release, then made a few attempts to cash in on it, but it was too late. Now, as much as I love the DC, it will probably be dead this time next year.

How are the graphics on the DC? Are they good or will the PS2 get the upper hand in ther future?

The PS2, by a fair clip. PS2 will have better lighting effects, more polygons, faster processor etc. etc. The only thing it DOESN'T have is built-in anti-aliasing, which is a technique that blends the image on-screen so the lines don't look so pixelated. So, first-generation Japanese PS2 games have been hammered because quite simply they don't look very clean.
However, some enterprising programmers have found ways to clean up those problems, so the US versions and 2nd-generation games will look substantially better.
Also, the PS2 will play all your PS1 games, and can also play DVDs. Do I love my DC? You betcha. But it's the way of things with technology.
Now, if you ask me about the Xbox...I'm drooling But I haven't heard ANYTHING on whether Lucasarts is doing any Xbox development.

The X-Box developer list doesn't have Lucasarts included. This is sad!
Yeah, the PS2 has better graphics, but the DC has much better games in my opinion. We might see some good games on the PS2 too...
Actually, a lot of people underestimated the Dreamcast! This was unforunate, because it would have been really spectacular with the support of the major gaming companies. It still turned out very good, with lotsa good games, but it could have been even better!
Oh, and this backwards combaility the PS2 has is also over-rated. Most people who will use it already have a PS and have already played the game to death. Second, you have BleemCast, which let's you play PS games on your DC, with all the graphical enchantments that carries. The PS games that runs on BleemCast already looks way better than the same games running on a PS2.
If ya desperately want a console now Tom , get a DC. Otherwise borrow Dave's PS2 and buy one when the price drops
Personally, I'm waiting for the GameCube!

I will consider it. I like the look of the DC, but the controller looks bulkey and I prefer the PS ones, I would get one if they redesigned some bits and made Starfighter for it.
Will the DC have a long life? Will I see an actual DC Game in the shelves? (NO, I HAVEN'T, I MEAN IT.) Will the PS2's selection get bigger?
Tune in next week.

I don't wanna wait a week!
The DC contoller looks bulky, but it's actually very comfortable. The only controller that beats it is the N64 one, which BTW is brilliant.
Yes, the DC will have a long life, due to the fact that so many people bought it and was happy with it. The DC has tons of good games coming out! And you haven't seen a DC game in a shop? Ever? Damn, the UK must be a conservavtive gaming country
Sure the PS2 collecton will get bigger, but what is best, bigger or better?

Good point Simpson. At the moment, a Dreamcast is £149 here in the UK. That's half of the PS2.

Yeah, the Bleemcast is a good point - I saw it on display at E3 - it's just amazing seeing a PS1 game running in hi-res at 60fps. However, don't expect to see TPM running on a Bleemcast anytime soon
The Sony programmers at LEC did a LOT of hijinx in order to get the game ported over from the PC correctly. You may not believe it, but it's a near miracle that the damn thing runs at ALL on the PSX. The levels were HUGE, the number of characters and AIs is just incredible. But, as a result, their hocus-pocus (you can tell I'm not a programmer ) made TPM for the PSX some kind of Frankenstein's Monster when it comes to Bleem! compatibility.
But, alas, I'm really afraid you won't be seeing many people developing new titles for the DC once the PS2 really gets rolling.
If you do get a DC, make SURE you get Crazy Taxi. And if you like American Football, get NFL2k1. There has NEVER been a better sports game. EVER. I mean it.
Oh, and Shenmue. Saw it at E3 too. Wow.
Um, and Jet Grind Radio.
And...Quake was kinda nice too.

Hey Zanzibar, about that game you were supposed to make before it turned into Episode I, is there any chance now of that being released? It really sounds like a good game, and would be great on PS2 or Dreamcast!

Pedro, the sweet Soul Calibur! This has got to be the best fighting game ever! The graphics are so sweet, the characters move like they would in real life and the moves are extra-ordinary!
NFL2K1 is pretty good, but I hate your "football"....
NBA2K1 is better in my opinion!
Oh, and the DC has full online capabilities now, and soon you can play Q3, UT, NBA2K1, NFL2K1 and Phantasy Star online! Plus a lot more games of course!

Ah - THAT idea No, I doubt it anyways, looks like the management at Lucasarts is heading into a new direction...not sure how Big Ape is gonna fit into their plans.
I'll fill in those who don't know: Big Ape's original storyline was based in the 'classic' Ep 4-6 time period, following a journey of a teenage boy taking up the quest of an immensely powerful item from a old Jedi knight, whom he discovers, dying, in the wreck of a starship that crash-lands near his backwater home. It was supposed to be a coming-of-age story etc. etc., with the Empire, the Hutts, and a few other factions ALL interested in this item that the boy is carrying. He'd make new friends, enemies, and eventually learn the ways of the Force, via the dead Jedi's presence.
That's all fine and good when we presented this idea to them back in early '97, but then LEC realized that they didn't have a 'full scale' game based on the Ep1 license. Jedi Knight was too far along to switch over to Ep1, so they decided to change our focus to following the Ep1 storyline. Some of our TPM levels were based on original designs for this previous game - Mos Espa primarily, and also the Gardens of Theed.

Originally PC only, just like TPM was originally supposed to be. It wasn't until fairly late in development that Lucasarts started discussing a PSX version of TPM.
Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine had a PSX version planned, and indeed LEC had a team working on converting the Jones engine for use on the PSX. Then Jones had some design delays, which meant that until those delays were sorted out, the PSX conversion team was idle. So, LEC brought that team over to TPM, working like hell to cram our game onto the PSX.
TPM PSX may not look like much, but seriously it was a helluva lot of work to get it to run as well as it does. I can't say a single bad thing about the PSX team.

My advice: figure out what games you want most, and then buy the system that plays the most games that you like.
Personally, if I were to buy one right now, it would be the Sega Dreamcast, because of the consoles out there that I don't own, it has the most games that I like.

Why I hope not? Well, consoles offers such limitations to FPS games. That's the main problem!
Plus I want PS2 to crash and burn of course!

If I was getting a PS2, I would get Starfighter and Metal Gear Solid 2... Those games actually look good!
MGS2 is over a year away though, so you'll have to wait for that one...
