I know, I saw Wraith 8 and he's got a shot of the box for his avy and the release date as his title.

I won't have any money because that is the day that we are supposed to have filed our tax forms here in the US.

I'll check it out.......but obviously, Knights is #1

I have the PC Gamer article on SWG(the cool one with Boba FEtt on the cover).
They don't want people to be Jedi in the game so bad that they are not only making it difficult to become one but there are a lot of draw backs to it as well.
Now I'm a Star Wars fan, but if I'm going to be RPGing Star Wars I want to be a Jedi. To me it's not fair that I will have to spend more time(therefore money) on this game to advance than someone who is becoming a Bounty Hunter.

I realize the game is set in a time where this is the case(I'm not putting that down). I think the way they being a Jedi in this game fits perfectly and that they implemented the system well.
But I refuse to spend all that time creating a character and then having 3 times the hassle that somebody else playing the game has.

I have heard that it will be difficult to become a jedi.....I feel like you Hannibal, if I'm gonna play a star wars rpg, I have to be a jedi, not for just a short time, but for quite a while. Not to slam on the game because I've obviously not played it.....I am looking forward to checking it out.

well, might sound controversial, but that's the way I am: I give no damn about being a jedi...

In fact, I am quite happy about that move...

I was already bored when in the novels, one by one, more and more "last jedi" appeared...

I mean what makes Luke so special ?

that he's supposed to be the last one of them!

Definitely agreed with Raven here. If I'm playing Star Wars during the galactic civil war, I don't want to see a bunch of 133t j3D1s running around. It doesn't fit in with continuity.

I think that in a few years time LEC will anounce the development of an MMORPG set in the time that KOTOR is in or around there. Then people can satisfy their sith/jedi urge.

However, wanting to be a jedi might be centered around people wanting to have the single player experience of being the center of attention. This apperently is an idea that people should get out of their heads when playing an MMORPG.

Hope you all have a good 2003 folks.

A word of warning to those of you wanting SWG. Read the article and then check out some of the comments down below. I'm not saying this is how Sony/Verant will treat SWG, but just check it out.

Ki Mundi,

What I got out of reading that article is that people hate Everquest and its developers yet are still willing to pay $12.95 to play it each month.

If people aren't happy, then they shouldn't keep playing.

I realize the author is using the addictive stance, but how can you be addicted to something that you hate? It's just a computer game, if people don't want to play it they don't have to.

Quote:
These situations are ‘lovingly’ referred to by the players as timesinks; gameplay traps intended to waste your time and keep you playing longer.
The longer you play the game, the more you're costing them in bandwidth, maintenance, server processing time etc.

Copntradicts what the author was saying about how they just try to rip money out of you.

I would say to the author to get out of the mindset of blaming other people for his/her own problems/mistakes and start taking responsibility for their own life and the choices they make.

FunClown, the impression your post gives me is that you have never played an MMORPG such as EverQuest, Asheron's Call, Dark Ages of Camelot, or UO, or a game that you have to pay a monthly fee in order to participate.

Quote:
As far as i can tell, the story being discussed was not meant to blame Sony for creating an addictive game, it was to blame Sony for creating a poor addiction. It seemed more aimed at convincing current addicts to realize they aren't having fun, and warn new customers away from the game, than to actually alter or condemn the behavior of Sony itself. (Of course, it did seem *very* keen on condemning Sony, but i think that was more meant to be a secondary effect of the article. Altering Sony's behavior, on the other hand, the author appears to have given up on.)
My point that I'm trying to make with giving out the link to this article is that MMORPG's rarely turn out to be what you expect unless you already have experience with Multi-Massively Online Role Playing Games. Most games don't, and everytime, it's the same way with all the previews and hypes that get thrown around. If you have never played a game like this, take into consideration the advice of people who have played them. It is just a game, but like so many other things in life, we try to make more out of them than what can be had.

The friendships, no, the relationships that are formed in these types of games are different than the friendships that you form with your friends in any other type of game. It's one of the main issues that people have with giving up their subscription to an MMORPG. I know this from first hand experience. A person of strong will, someone who can organize their time and then follow a straight path can divide their time between an MMORPG and other games and RL. But it's tough, real tough, and very few can do it.

Btw,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Your right Ki Mundi, I have never played an MMORPG in my life. I have no perspective on the 'relationships' that are formed and how they differ. It actually sounds pretty sad to me that people should pay for something they hate still, or perhaps I am not even understanding the message. Is it money spent to keep in touch with friends or what's the deal?

Are you sure the author of the article was writing what was in his/her heart or was it about them not being able to take responsibility for their own lives and the choices they make day to day. Varent and Sony are not forcing them to play the game and allow them to cancel at any time. IMO, it is up to the player to keep tabs on themselves and not Sony and Varent.

The main reason why I am kind of going on about this issue is that I can see someone taking Varent and Sony to court over the addictiveness and how they can't control their urges. This is what I don't want to see happen. But again, I've probably missed what you are saying again.

BTW, that 14 year old 133t k1d you become friends with in SWG could be an 80 year old Grand-ma, you just don't know unless you've met them in person offline.

well, I tried 4 or 5 different ones, and I could easily give up after a while...

that timesink stuff, well, it costs them more if you play the whole day...

you pay them monthly, but within that month, every time you can't stop playing,it costs them money, not you...

and saying it's just a rip off: cheap idiots!

I hate those guys, same for all those who say I hate MS and then still use Windows or burn AoM...

All bastards...

Flanders, there probably will be some kind of trial, but they will require you to provide a credit card number or some way to bill you. So when the trial is over, they start billing you even if you don't want to continue playing. Not counting an Open Beta, if they have one.

If you play for just a bit, yes, it is easy to give up after a while. But if you play for say... 4 months, 6 months, then it isn't so easy. But just casual gaming for a short period of time, that will work, though I don't think that such a thing would justify buying a game such as these. It's like donating money to the developers. Sort of. Com, I'm not sure that I understand your point of how it costs them money. They've got thousands of subscribers paying them. Granted, these developers aren't the richest people around, but the games still bring in more than enough money to pay for the server expenses and everything else that needs up keep.

FunClown, I'm not trying to make an arguement here. I was merely trying to provide more insight into an MMORPG for those who have no previous experience. They can be very fun, but there is only so much fun they can provide because there is only so much that can be programmed into a game.

Well, after seeing that you must pay to play SWG, I think I will simply go to something else and enjoy the game without having to pay more than $50 for the game itself... I simply don't like to pay anymore than I have to and put money into a developers pocket as rates could increase slightly and such. It's not worth it to me.

My point is:

you pay a certain amount for a month of play.
They pay for bandwidth and stuff wit it.

Within that month that you pay for, it is better for them if you play less, as they don't get more money if you play more, but they need more bandwidth...

So the thing with timesiks is: within that paid month, the devs get absolutely nothing out of you playing more. Instead, it costs them...

I see what you're saying. But I don't think they lose money by people playing more simply by the sheer number of subscribers that pay each month. And not all the subscriptions are paid on the same day. They've got almost a continual flow of income to pay for bandwidth. If every subscription was active at once and all playing at once for a suspended period of time, that would probably cause them to lose money, but not much, I think.

Com, did you beta AC2, and do you know if they ever let any more people into SWG beta?

Ki Mundi, Beta 1 and 2 are closed betas limited to about upwards of 1000 people (They are nearing the end of Beta 2 right now). Beta 3 should begin from now to the next couple of weeks hopefully.

I hope I will be chosen for beta 3, but I don't really like my chances. Would be cool still anyways.

I'm not sure if they are still having a formal beta 4 or if it was mashed in with beta 3. Beta 4 was basically going to be public beta.

I hope they do Beta 4 because I sort of messed up with my specs at the time and could have gotten rejected for it anyways. I would hope there to be a beta 4 though and by/after Feb when I can start playing the game.

Leemu, you can change your computer specs in the profiles section at www.starwarsgalaxies.com . You do NOT have to resubmit your beta application if you do this either.
