Troll Training

An interesting idea was brought up by one of the our own members at Dex's Diner. This academy is supposed to teach its members how to not spam and flame. However, a new problem has come to our attention, and we must adjust to meet this new challenge. The challenge is: trolls. In the past few months, we've had our share of trolls, and we have retorted in a way in which we should be embarassed about. I am certain most of our masters and padawans lack the training to deal with these situations properly. I myself do not know how. Therefore, I think troll training should be a part of the cirriculum now. I am unsure of what we should do to learn it, but I am certain Darklighter or obiwan13 does, so we shall wait for a response from them in order to figure this problem out.

In case of troll:

1) report immidiatly to mod/super mod/admin. The ones online are the best, no matter who they are.

2)ignore the troll. They will be gone sooner if you let them be.

Hmm, only one question, and its really stupid! What exactly is a Troll? I've always wondered what they are, but I've never been told. So I guess this is kinda n00bish ! Hmm, I kinda have a feeling about what they are, but I would like to know what they are for sure...!

Thx for your help !

A troll is someone who joins a forums just to cause havoc.

They come in making threads such as "soandso is gay" or "you all have no liveS!!1!Zazz!"

They usually get banned within 3 minutes of their arrival.

Thank you for pointing this out Phantom. I was going to re-post my little guide here that I original put on EB. But since you beat me to it (lol), I'll just post here what i posted over there.

think some people might need a little training when it comes to trolls in the forums (maybe not here, but certainly at The Swamp). There's a flame going on right now in the Swamp, which has calmed down a little since earlier. I hope everyone knows what to do in that particular situation, and if not, try and follow these simple guildlines:

- If a troll enters the forum and starts making a thread which is just full of spam/flames, the worst thing to do is go straight in there and retaliate. Do not post, I repeat, do not post unless you are a mod who knows how to handle the situation.

- The next thing to do is look at the main page to see which admins are online and PM then with the problem, stating where the flame threads are and which member it is. Be quick about it.

- Again, do not post anything. Let the mods/admins handle it, as soon as they have been notified.

- If a slightly different situation should arise, in which the troll has posted a lengthy speech with is not all flames (see the latest threads in the Swamp at the moment), I know it would be tempting to go in and right a lengthy speech in retaliation. This is ok, just make sure you consider these points:
  • Do not post any flames towards them whatsoever. If you do you will just be lowering yourself to their level.
  • Make sure you can back up your argument, and make your point, but don't go overboard.
  • Be as nice as you can about it (if that is possible). Being nicer will get you further than if you are nasty.
  • If you can get them to flame, and not do it yourself, there'll be a better chance of them getting banned.
  • Eventually they will either get bored or banned, depending on what approach you take.
  • Be sure to notify an admin anyway.
------------------------------

Well i hope this has helpedJust so you know what to do in an emergency. Be sensible about it as well. Thank you ^_^

Another question. Say there's a thread posted by a troll. A non-LFJA member posts in it, trying to retaliate. Is it the LFJA's perogative to discourage the other member from retaliating?

have a suggestion for the lf poll? pm me

"Trolls" are users who sign up simply to flame, spam, and generally annoy others, no other reason. They start threads saying how great they are/how stupid others are, and just pointless stuff like that. To simply sum it up, "Trolls" are users who are looking for trouble, and will often start it themselves if they have to.

When people say "Don't feed the Trolls", they mean don't post in the thread, just in case anyone was actually wondering. By posting in their thread, you are giving them exactly what they want. Attention. If no one actually replied to Troll threads, they'd simply drop to the bottom of the page and beyond. But instead, people reply, and it keeps the thread on the first page. And, even if the Troll kept constantly bumping his own thread, so what? It would be the online equivilent of talking to yourself...

So, three easy steps: Stop, drop, and er...

1. Report the post to a moderator, supermoderator, or admin, the last two are the best choices if available. Obi-Wan13, ACDCFanBill, and Rogue Nine are supermods, and Boba Rhett is an admin who is usually online. These are 4 people right there that would be good to message.

2. Do NOT post in the thread. Simple as that. Most Troll threads end up being bumped back to the top of the first page, by people posting in the thread, telling people not to post in the thread The irony of it is simply amazing.

3. After the thread has been closed/deleted, just be on the lookout for another few minutes. There is always a possibility that the Troll may re-appear, so keep your eyes open. The mods/supermods/admins can't be everywhere all of the time, so help them out a little.

Remember kids, only you can prevent Troll Attacks

EDIT : Seems everyone already beat me to it...

And Rogue Nine brings up an interesting point. It does seem like a good idea to stop that user from retaliating, but perhaps a friendly PM(or an instant message from a messanger service if you know the user)would be a better choice than posting in that case. But of course, there will usually be at least one "DON'T FEED THE TROLL!!!" post in every troll thread, so if you feel it's really necessary do what you think is right. We obviously can't stop everyone from posting in troll threads, and we're not responsible for everyone, but don't encourage a troll by posting in his thread unless it becomes really necessary. And of course, these are all just suggestions and ideas, we don't control everyone on the boards, and we don't control everyone in LFJA. So just use your own discretion, ok.

actually obi, thats not the whole definition. trolls are ppl who do that AND come back after banning 2+ times...

@rogue nine: im assuming it would be, since thats why it was formed, but i tihnk you should pm that person instead of posting in the thread, because if you post in the thread, you are merely letting the troll win....

Thumbs up what 2 do

I know the best thing to do with a troll is ignore them. But when they follow you around and boot stomp in your thread, ignoring them is very hard.

Ive never reported anyone 4 trolling although i have come very close. Instead I have found a little solidarity from the regulars who count to ten before they respond works pretty good.
